30 Uses for Coconut Oil

For decades, coconut oil was maligned for its high saturated-fat content. Now, however, it’s becoming the darling of many health experts.

This is because in the past decade or so, the supposed dangers of saturated fats have been seriously called into question (for more on this, see “A Big Fat Mistake“).

Meanwhile, recent research has also revealed that most of the saturated fat found in coconuts — lauric acid — is a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT), a type of fat particularly coveted for its health and fitness benefits.

“MCTs are fats that digest and absorb more rapidly,” says Adriane Angarano, CN, a Seattle-based functional and holistic nutritionist. “They go directly to the liver to be utilized for energy instead of stored as fat.”

Research shows that eating MCTs helps you burn more calories, satisfy hunger more quickly, and assist in regulating weight better than the long-chain triglycerides predominant in most vegetable oils.

In studies on rats, virgin coconut oil has been shown to reduce blood serum levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol while raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol. It also appears to help blood coagulation and improve antioxidant status.

Nutritionists say MCTs can also play a key role in higher-fat, lower-carb diets, which seem to help epilepsy, cancer, and Alzheimer’s patients.

Organic, extra-virgin coconut oil — the gold standard in terms of flavor and nutrition — also has rich anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties.

Plus, it serves an amazing number of non-edible purposes. In coconut-loving Malaysia, the word for coconut tree translates as “the tree of a thousand uses.” Here are just a few.

Nutrition & Cooking

Coconut-Oil

  • Instead of butter, fry or scramble your eggs in coconut oil, and try slathering it on toast.
  • Stir a spoonful in your oatmeal or spread on pancakes for a lower glycemic load.
  • Making your own granola? Baking treats? Swap in coconut oil instead of typical vegetable oil or shortening.
  • Whirl into smoothies for longer-lasting energy and an instant hit of cholesterol-improving lauric acid.
  • Even unrefined coconut oil has a relatively high smoke point, making it great for higher-temperature cooking, such as stir-frying or sautéing. Try cooking your dark leafy greens using coconut oil and a little sea salt.
  • Make theater-style popcorn by heating kernels in coconut oil in a heavy kettle.  Once popped, drizzle a mixture of melted coconut oil and butter over the top.
  • As an alternative to a latte or coffee with cream, in a blender combine 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tablespoon unsalted grassfed butter, and 1 cup of coffee until it’s creamy and no oil is floating on the surface, about 20 to 30 seconds. Spike with vanilla or cinnamon, if desired.
  • Mash into sweet potatoes or use to cook sweet-potato fries for a rich, nutty flavor.
  • When making homemade mayo, replace half the olive oil with coconut oil. Or replace the oil in your favorite homemade salad dressing.
  • For a quick treat, melt and mix with dark chocolate to make fudge or bark. Or pour the liquid mixture over a scoop of cold ice cream. It will harden instantly, like on a classic dipped cone.
  • Eat it by the spoonful, right out of the jar — a quick supplement and snack combined.

Body Care

Coconut-Oil-and-Bath-Products

  • Mix a little baking soda with coconut oil for a quick homemade tooth polish.
  • Make a chemical-free deodorant from solid coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder or cornstarch, plus a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender. (For a recipe,  see “Homemade Deodorant: B.O. No Mo’“.)
  • The natural analgesic properties of virgin coconut oil can help take some of the sting out of bug bites, chicken pox, and poison ivy, and aid skin in healing faster. Coconut oil is also a natural sunburn soother.
  • Skip petroleum-based lip balms and create your own from coconut oil, beeswax,  and vitamin E. (For a simple recipe, see http://j.mp/c2lipbalms.)
  • Massage your hair and scalp with coconut oil prior to shampooing to promote hair health.
  • Use as an all-over body moisturizer to smooth dry skin and add sheen. Slather on after your shower, or try adding a few tablespoons to your bath. Great as massage oil, too.
  • Use as a shaving cream — great for chemically sensitive folks.
  • New parents use coconut oil to help combat diaper rash. Not only does it sooth a baby’s bum, it also contains antibacterial agents that fight infection and promote healing.

General Health

  • Consider taking coconut oil as a supportive treatment in preventing and fighting systemic fungal conditions, including athlete’s foot and vaginal yeast infections. The oil’s caprylic acid helps degrade the cellular membrane of theCandida albicans fungus, limiting its ability to colonize.
  • To help relieve seasonal allergy discomfort and itch, try rubbing a little oil in your nostrils. It’s also a good immune-system booster and a strong anti-inflammatory, both of which can help ease allergy symptoms.
  • For earaches, melt a little bit of coconut oil, cool to room temperature, place in an eyedropper, and put several drops in the affected ear. The oil’s antimicrobial qualities can help fight low-grade infections.
  • Anti-inflammatory coconut oil can help canker sores and cold sores heal faster.
  • Allow a tablespoon of coconut oil to melt in your mouth, then swish it around for 10, ideally 20, minutes to draw out impurities and moisturize oral tissue. Then spit it out and rinse with water. Known as “oil pulling,” this ancient practice has grown increasingly popular in recent years. Research has shown it effectively combats bad breath and plaque.
  • Try coconut oil as an acne preventive. A 2009 study found that lauric acid can kill the bacteria that promote inflammatory acne. Rub a bit onto vulnerable areas.

Household

  • Season your cast-iron pan with solidified coconut oil. Coat interior surface, then let the pan sit in a 300-degree-F oven for 20 minutes.
  • Create a quick furniture polish by mixing 3/4 teaspoon coconut oil and 1/4 cup lemon juice. First remove dust, then rub in coconut mixture with a clean, soft cloth, and buff to a gleaming shine.
  • Combine 1/4 cup of coconut oil with 20 drops of citronella oil for a nontoxic bug repellent.
  • Gum in your hair? Unknown sticky substance on the couch? Combine coconut oil with baking soda and rub.
  • Use it on your dog to ward off fleas, soothe dry skin, and smooth fur. (Some pet owners also mix coconut oil into pet food for an extra boost of nutrients and healthy fats.)

I’ve always had this vague idea that I could eat my way to healthier skin, but I’d never really dug into the details. It makes sense though, right? Pack your diet with nourishing, vitamin-rich foods, and your whole body benefits, including your body’s largest organ.

Rather than keep piling the kale onto my plate and hoping for the best, I thought it was time to research the best foods for healthy skin.

1. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant that helps your body repair damaged skin cells. I’m sure you’ve had your sweet potatoes boiled or roasted, but there are other yummy ways to get this skin-smart orange veggie into your diet.

How to eat them: Try baked sweet potato fries, a deeply-seasoned sweet potato soup, or sweet potato brownies (no, really!).

2. Blueberries

Blueberries – and other dark berries – contain high concentrations of antioxidants. Beta carotene (see above) is just one antioxidant that helps protect your skin. On top of the antioxidants, blueberries can help with red, blotchy skin.

How to eat them: Right out of the container! You can also add them to muffins or biscuits. Just beware of blueberry-flavored foods that don’t actually contain any blueberries.

3. Peanuts and Almonds

Peanuts and almonds are both very high in biotin, a nutrient that your body needs to create skin, hair, and nail cells. Biotin is a B vitamin, and a deficiency in this important nutrient can cause skin irritation and rashes.

How to eat them: Peanut or almond butter is obvious, but try using peanut or almond butter to make a delicious, creamy sauce or branching out with a super yummy peanut stew.

4. Flax and Chia Seeds

Studies going as far back as the late 1920s have shown that omega 3 fatty acids help promote healthy skin. These healthy fats help strengthen cell membranes, which protect your skin from harmful toxins. Flax and chia seeds are both great sources of healthy omega 3s.

How to eat them: Serve up homemade flax crackers with hummus for dipping or try some of these yummy flax recipes.

5. Papaya

This tropical fruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps your body repair damaged skin cells. Papaya also has anti-inflammatory compounds that help improve your skin’s appearance.

How to eat it: Cut chunks of papapya into your next fruit salad for dessert, try a savory Thai green papaya salad, or top grilled tofu with homemade papaya salsa.

6. Avocado

Avocados contain those healthy omega 3 fatty acids, and they’re also a great source of vitamin E. Vitamin E helps protect your skin from fine lines and wrinkles. A vitamin E-rich diet also helps you bounce back from sunburn.

How to eat it: Go beyond guacamole! Toss some avocado into a quinoa and kale salad or stuff them into some Super Collard Rolls.

7. Green Tea

Put the kettle on, because green tea is full of skin-rejuvenating polyphenols that can improve your skin’s health and even help protect your body from skin cancer.

How to drink it: Sip a mug of green tea or use it as a base for soups or smoothies.

8. Water

I know, it almost felt like a cop-out including water on this list. But the benefits of hydration are too many to discount. If you don’t like drinking plain old water, don’t worry! Below are some options to spice things up.

How to drink it: Try watermelon coconut water, homemade water kefir, or eat your water!

9. Collard Greens

I wasn’t far off with my plateful of kale plan, but collard greens beat kale in antioxidant counts and anti-inflammatory benefits. You can use collards in place of kale in lots of recipes!

How to eat them: Top your tacos with gingered collard slaw, stuff the leaves with jerk tempeh, or pan fry them with potatoes for a filling supper.

10. Brazil Nuts

The humble Brazil nut is a selenium superstar! Selenium works with vitamin E to protect your skin cells from damaging free radicals.

How to eat them: Sneak them into a flavorful humus recipe, toss them with amaranth and greens, make raw chocolate truffles, or use them to make creamy vegan mac and cheese.

7 Surprising Signs You Need to Sleep More

One in three Americans aren’t getting enough  sleep — are you one of them? Click through to check out some of the most  surprising consequences of sleep deprivation. How many hours do you get each  night? Let us know in the comments section.

1. You’re Feeling Weepy.

Have you ever felt like you might burst into  tears at the drop of a hat after you pulled an all-nighter? Researchers  at UC-Berkeley have linked sleepless nights to our inability to reason and  handle perceived threats. That minor squabble with a friend or sappy movie on TV  may not seem so terrible on a day when we’re well-rested.

2. You Just Can’t Focus.

From plane crashes to oil spills, some of the worst disasters in recent  memory have been attributed, at least in part, to fatigue. Similarly, one study  has suggested that medical interns on the night shift were two times as likely  to misinterpret test results from patients. Sure, most of us don’t have the  lives of innocent people in our hands on a daily basis (well, outside of our  cars.. more on that later), but sleep deprivation can have serious consequences  on our everyday lives. Sleepiness can impact your brain’s ability to focus and  stay alert, thus making it more difficult to understand and process new  information.

3. You Always Feel Sick.

Everyone in your family has avoided the cold this winter, but you’ve had the  sniffles since Thanksgiving. What gives? Take a look at your sleep habits. If  you’re not getting enough shut eye, your immune system is not working as well as  it could be, thus making you more susceptible to catching viruses or bacterial  infections. And it doesn’t just make you more likely to catch a cold, it can  also make it harder for you to recover.

4. You’re Never Hungry.. Or You’re Always  Hungry.

Everyone is different, even when it comes to how sleep deprivation impacts  our appetites — and neither of them are healthy. A lack of sleep throws our  internal clock , and our hunger hormones, off balance. For some of us, this  means that we eat more than we normally would, and for others it means we don’t  want to eat at all.

5. Your Skin is Dry.

Sleep is a time for your body to repair itself — including creating new skin  cells. That, plus all of the essential vitamins, water, and nutrients that your  skin needs to stay healthy, can cause your skin to dry out.

6. You’re Sloppy.

Spill your coffee on the newspaper this morning? Sleeplessness can impact  your motor skills and ability to react quickly to things around you. Maybe  you’re not just a klutz, perhaps  you need more sleep!

7. You’re Forgetting Everything.

Can’t remember what you ate for breakfast? You may need a few more hours of  shut eye. Sleep impacts how your brain stores information, including, yep, where  you left your glasses. And it’s not just your short-term memory: sleep  deprivation has been shown to have negative consequences of student’s test  scores and grades.

Our skin is our biggest organ, which means it’s mega-important for all us beauties to keep it in top-notch condition. Luckily for us, we can do this by simply eating! I know, I’m excited about this concept too!

So what foods will give your skin that healthy, clear, youthful, radiant glow? Well, read on, sister, because I’m about to break down 3 of the best foods that will make your skin look better than it ever has.

Avocados

Mmmmm guacamole. It’s the first thing that pops into my head when I think about avocados, and maybe that’s because it might just be the yummiest way to ingest your daily intake of healthy fats. I usually use it as a side with egg whites to kick off my day, but you can also use them to top salads or as an alternative to mayo on sandwiches.

And not only do avocados taste awesome, but they are also one of the best foods to help with complexion issues. Thanks to their high (healthy) fat content, they help to keep your skin hydrated and are also packed with anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm down any puffiness your skin might be experiencing.

Tomatoes

If you want to turn back the clock on your skin and help battle premature aging, start incorporating tomatoes into your diet.

Not only are they a great source of vitamins, but they also help to promote the production of collagen, improve skin hydration, and strengthen your skin cells, all of which are necessary to help fight those annoying little lines and wrinkles.

Salmon

While summer weather makes us crave being outside, the sun damage can really take a toll on our skin. Luckily, we can eat salmon, which is rich in Omegas and antioxidants. They help to nourish our skin, fight against free radicals, and increase our naturally radiant glow.

And if you really want to amp up your Omega intake, consider leaving the skin on your salmon, as that’s where the majority of the fats and oils are found.

Not only will your skin feel healthy, but you should notice it feeling softer, firmer, and more hydrated, as well as having a more even tone to it.

And just in case that isn’t enough benefits for one little fish, salmon also helps to battle any PMS symptoms we ladies might experiences. Not bad for a tasty meal that can be eaten baked, grilled, pan fried, or broiled.

If you try to incorporate these 3 power foods into your regular diet, you should notice your skin looking healthier, younger, firmer, and more naturally radiant. Just make sure you combine these ingredients with a skin cleansing system that is right for your specific skin type. Now that’s one skin regimen I can stick to!

Honeydew for a Dewy Complexion

Honeydew melon (the green-fleshed one) is a natural source of the mineral  copper, which assists in skin repair and skin cell regeneration. Additionally,  this melon is rich in vitamin C which helps boost collagen levels. Collagen  tends to become depleted as we age, causing wrinkling. Eating more honeydew  melon may help prevent small lines and wrinkles.

Tomatoes aren’t the only food that contains high amounts of the phytonutrient  lycopene. So does watermelon. The  modern sciences are engaged in researching the products and formula for   anti aging property. Amla(Emblica Officinalis): Amla is the best Rasayana as   mentioned in the  Charaka samhita. Amla is the magical herbs with the  rich  in Vitamin C. It is believed to have good rejuvenating power. The  fruits of  Amla  is used to make the Chyawanprash (Herbal tonic) and best  Rasayana.  So daily intake of Amla and its products is good anti aging  property.

Ginger Family: The rhizomes of the ginger family  contain an  array of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients.  Ginger contains  essential oils and spicy substances such as gingerol,  shogaol, zingerone and  capsaicin, all of which increase peripheral blood  flow. It reduce cellular  inflammation for anti-aging skin care  benefits.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes contain curcumin and  its  derivatives (curcuminoids) that are bright yellow in color. Their  hydrogenated  derivatives, tetrahydrocurcuminoids, are nearly colorless  materials. All of  them possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory  activity.

Galanga (Alpinia officinarum), also known as Galangal  or  Chinese ginger, contains essential oils, gingerols and a group of  pungent  substances, diarylheptanoids. Diarylheptanoids (and analogous  phenyl alkyl  ketones) possess excellent anti-arthritic properties due to  their arrest of  prostaglandin biosynthesis via inhibition of  5-lipoxygenase. Purified extracts  of galanga, which are composed  primarily of lower alkyl cinnamate esters, have  UV absorbing,  antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibiting properties.

Frankincense, Boswellia: Guggal (Boswellia serrata) has   been used for centuries as an arthritis treatment. This biochemical  mechanism  provides a way to formulate skin anti-aging products via the  incorporation of  extracts or isolated pure compounds.

Clove Family: Clove oil and clove buds have  applications as  toothache and muscular pain remedies. A number of plants  in this family,  notably Syzygium aromaticum, Syzygium corynocarpum and  Syzygium mallacense  contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory  constituents.

Vitis: The grape family is well known for its potent   antioxidant constituents, especially procyanidins, found mostly in  seeds, and  resveratrol, concentrated in skins of red and black grapes.  suggests their  application for skin anti-aging benefits.

Trace Metals: About 30 elements are recognized as  essential  to life. Some are required in macroscopic amounts in  essentially all forms of  life: H, Na, K, Mg, Ca, C, N, O, P, S and Cl.  The others occur in trace or  ultra-trace quantities. Fe, Cu and Zn are  at the top end of this “trace” scale.  The modulation of these  metalloenzymes by appropriate trace metal topical  therapies can lead to  new skin anti-aging ingredients and their formulation  methodologies.

Licorice: Glycyrrhiza glabra contains some very  exciting  active agents  Glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid, glabrol,  glabridins and  various liquiritins are most interesting for skin care  applications due to  their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin color  (melanin) reduction  benefits. Neem: Azadirachta indica has been recognized  for its  antibacterial, insecticidal, antimalarial, hypoglycemic, and   would-healing benefits. Recent work has shown neem extracts to possess  strong  antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties.

Andrographis: Neoandrographolide, one of the principal   diterpene lactones, isolated from a medicinal herb Andrographis  paniculata  actively inhibits suggests potential for skin anti-aging  applications for both  andrographolide and neoandrographolide.

Pomegranate: Punica granatum provides a wealth of  wonderful antioxidant and free radical  neutralizing ingredients, for  example, ellagic acid, gallagic acid, punicalins,  and punicalagins. All  are suitable for anti-aging applications, although some  are not  commercially available.

11 Beauty Uses for Coconut

Did you know that if you use the typical department or drug store brands of  cosmetics daily, you could be absorbing nearly 5 pounds of chemicals into your body annually?

Many of these widely distributed products that are highly advertised and  hyped, including some of the ones your dermatologist sells, have been linked to  deadly inflammatory conditions and even cancers.

You might want to check your personal care product labels and see if they include any of  the following: Mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), petrolatum,  propylene glycol, gycerin, collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, alpha hydroxy  acids (AHA’s), bentonite, fragrances, kaolin, lanolin, lauramide DEA, sodium  chloride, or benzophenone. These are the culprits we don’t want to put  on our skin, which is the largest organ in our bodies.

Some of these ingredients are even advertising buzz words that we have become  accustomed to believe that they are actually good to have in our products, but  nothing could be further from the truth.

To the get the “skinny” on each of these ingredients and why you don’t want  to put them on your skin, please peruse, “The Truth About Cosmetics,” as we are going to learn how to  avoid all of them by making some or all of our own personal care and beauty  products both safely and cost effectively. I will share a few here but there is  a wealth to be mined online and you can experiment yourself with these recipes  and find many good ones.

Making our products ourselves is the very best way to be sure that we’re not  ingesting or applying these and many more dangerous chemicals topically. In the  spirit of DIY why not simply take matters in our own hands and make our own  meals at home as much as possible and make our own beauty and personal care  products, too? I think you will find that this can be both fun and easy to do  when using your own organic and natural ingredients. You might even find that  you may already have beauty-fuel ingredients right in your own kitchen that can  be the base of many homemade personal care products.

I suggest to my clients that the most important natural food and ingredient  to have on hand to use as a base for our homemade personal care products is  organic, expeller pressed, unrefined, virgin, coconut oil.

The Coconut and Its Beauty-Fuel Oil

The scientific name for the coconut is cocos nucifera. Spanish  explorers called it “coco,” which was said to mean “monkey face” because the  three holes on its surface, especially the pair of eyes on the hairy nut’s  surface resembles the face and the head of a monkey. Nucifera means “nut-bearing.”

Coconuts have been found to be extremely nutritious. They provide coconut  meat (which we usually purchase as flakes), juice, milk, and oil which has fed,  nourished and soothed populations, externally and internally around the world  for hundreds of years. Many island nations use the coconut as a staple food in  their diet because it provides the majority of the food the people eat. The idea  I present here is to use it both internally and externally!

Why Should We Use Coconut Oil Internally?

Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is  classified as a “functional food” because it provides many health benefits  beyond its nutritional content. Coconut oil is of special interest here because  it possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other dietary oil and is  extensively used in traditional medicine among Asian and Pacific populations.  Pacific Islanders consider coconut oil to be the cure for all that ails them. I  couple it for my clients with an organic cold extracted greenlip mussel oil  supplement in capsule form, in order to augment the benefits of the coconut oil  by incorporating the unique array of anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids which  this marine source is rich in. The beautiful, bountiful, coconut palm is highly valued by  most island people as it is known to be both a source of food and medicine. Coconut Oil is Brilliant Topically

Coconut oil topically acts as a wonderful moisturizer for all types of skin,  including dry and aging skin. Coconut oil is a safe solution for preventing  dryness and flaking of skin and it makes a perfect massage oil, as well.  It is  known to delay the onset of wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become  prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems  including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Coconut oil  should and does form the foundation ingredient of various personal care products  such as soaps, lotions, and creams. Coconut oil also helps in preventing  premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

The nutritional benefits of coconut oil are said to include hair care, skin  care, stress relief, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, weight loss,  increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney  problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental  care, and bone strength. These benefits can be attributed to the presence of  lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as  antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing, etc.

How to Use Coconut Oil in Our Daily Routine

To use coconut oil in your daily routine, it’s as simple as applying pure  coconut oil all over your body and then stepping into a steaming shower or tub.  And then how about using a homemade coconut oil scrub to exfoliate your  skin?

Scrubs offer a fantastic opportunity to remove dead skin and  make you feel invigorated in the process.

Here is my recipe for a homemade Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub, that is easy to  make and store:

Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

1 cup organic coconut sugar 1/3 cup fine ground Himalayan Chrystal or pink  salt 1/2 cup cold or expeller pressed, virgin, organic, coconut oil 2-3  tablespoons almond oil 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil 1 or 2 drops of lavender essential oil (or you can use rose essential oil)

Since you might have a nice jar with lid on hand which you may have saved  from the recycling bin you can start with your own recycled jar, or buy a “Ball  Jar,”  add the Himalayan Chrystal or pink salt, coconut oil and then add the  rest of the ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon. (I like to keep a small  wooden spoon in my shower or next to the tub to stir the scrub and spoon it into  my hand for easier application.)

For an all-natural moisturizer after bath or shower, pure coconut oil  is my favorite. It’s a beauty-fuel moisturizer and a potent source of  the beneficial fat lauric acid. I put a tablespoon in my herbal tea and sip this  before, during or after my bath or shower. Your thyroid gland loves coconut oil  as it helps to nourish it. One of the symptoms of hypothryroidism is dry skin so  we get double the benefits when we use coconut oil internally and externally as  often as possible.

How Else Can We Use Coconut Oil?

If you are using coconut oil for topical purposes, especially skin, scalp and  hair care, just melt the oil (if it is in its solid state) by keeping the bottle  in the sun or warming it in warm water. Coconut oil melts in hot weather and  congeals in cold weather and this is normal for coconut oil. You can also take  some coconut oil out and put it in a small bowl and heat the bowl over a flame  (do not use microwave). Then take the oil on your palm and apply it to your  skin, or scalp and hair.

Body Lotion: After a bath or shower, just massage coconut  oil all over your body— it feels and smells amazing. You can remove any excess  oil with a Turkish towel and rub yourself down briskly.

Facial Moisturizer: Whether your skin is dry or oily or even  if you struggle with acne, coconut oil turns out to be antimicrobial,  antifungal, and antibacterial, which explains why it heals skin conditions so  well.

Eye Makeup Remover: Just melt a little coconut oil in the  palm of your hand and apply it to a cotton ball and remove your eye makeup  gently, as you would with a store bought product. Don’t get any oil into your  eyes, please.

Hair Conditioner and De-Tangler: Coconut oil is great for  all hair types, thin, thick, straight or curly—coconut oil helps amazingly and  after blow drying or flat ironing apply a little to your hands and use to  achieve a sheen.

Deep Conditioner for Hair: Perhaps once a month or after  coloring, perming, straightening or other treatment, slather coconut oil on your  scalp and let it soak in for a little while and then shampoo out.

Toothpaste: Baking soda + coconut oil makes a fine  toothpaste.

Coconut Oil Shampoo: It’s not difficult to make your own  shampoo, as follows:

Homemade Coconut Oil Shampoo

Simply mix 1/4 cup coconut milk (I use the Thai canned coconut milk but there  are other options to experiment with or make your own) with 1/3 cup liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s) and combine with 1  tablespoon coconut oil, 1 teaspoon almond oil and 
10 to 20 drops of essential  oil of lavender or rose (stop after 10 drops and see how you like the fragrance  and then add more slowly checking after each addition to customize your  shampoo). Combine all ingredients in a blender or whisk thoroughly and pour into  a recycled shampoo bottle or jar and shake well.  Again you can recycle whatever  you have on hand for this purpose. It’s great to repurpose whenever we can.  Shampoo as you would with any shampoo and rinse well. A rinse of 50 percent  water and 50 percent white vinegar is a nice finish.

Or try a coconut oil hair mask.

Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Simply mix 1 tablespoon organic honey with 
3 tablespoons coconut oil   (optional ingredient) and one raw beaten egg yolk and whisk thoroughly or use  your blender. 
While still in the shower and your hair is still wet but not  dripping, pour the hair mask a little bit at a time onto the ends of your hair,  working your way up to the scalp. As soon as you’ve used all the mask and your  hair is thoroughly coated, wrap it in a damp warm towel or a shower cap and  leave in for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo your hair as usual. For a deeper  conditioning treatment try this:

Deep Coconut Oil Conditioner Recipe

One very ripe mashed fresh avocado 2 tablespoons coconut oil 2  tablespoons purified water 2 tablespoons organic (preferably raw) heavy  cream

Combine all ingredients and using a wide tooth comb, comb it through your  hair and cover with a shower cap or a wrap your head in a warm towel for  about 30 minutes. Allow the Deep Coconut Oil Conditioner to penetrate deep into  your hair and scalp, then rinse the conditioner out with tepid water.   Shampoo with our homemade coconut oil shampoo and rinse.

All of these homemade personal care products will last a bit longer and stay  fresher (up to a week) if you keep them in the fridge!

You can see by these examples that there are many personal care products that  we can make ourselves by utilizing the beauty-fuel coconut and other natural  ingredients. When we cook with and use coconut oil in many of our recipes, we  make full use of the beauty-fuel benefits of the bounty that the coconut and  nature itself offers us. This way we can achieve beauty that is more than skin  deep!

2.    Skip the garlic and onions
You know they make your breath smell, but what about the rest of you? “If you’ve been surrounded by cooking foods such as garlic, onions, and strong spices, these odors can cling to your clothes and hair,” says Lenise Banse, MD. “Until your clothing and hair are washed, these odors will be carried with you.”

What could be better than protecting your lips from the winter’s chill by slathering on chocolate? Not much, and I bet if you went to the Environmental Working Group’s, Skin Deep website and checked out what’s lurking in lipstick (lead, yikes!) you’d ditch the lipstick and opt for healthy, homemade Cocoa Lip Balm. Why Cocoa?

The cocoa bean is used to make chocolate. It’s made from roasted, husked, and ground seeds of the cacao bean, theobroma cacao, from which much of the fat has been removed. Cocoa contains large amounts of antioxidants. According to Your Daily Thread:

“Cocoa contains large amounts of antioxidants. According to research at Cornell, cocoa powder has nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine, and up to three times those found in green tea. Our super friend also contains magnesium, iron, chromium, vitamin C, zinc and more.”

Antioxidants that protects the body from aging, vitamins and minerals for overall health and…chocolate. Sign me up. In fact, my husband so sweetly made this Lip Balm for everyone on his holiday list after he read this. It was a huge hit! Try this recipe for healthy Cocoa Lip Balm that will make you smacking your lips for more:

DIY Cocoa Lip Balm

What you need:

1 teaspoon beeswax
2 teaspoons pure Fair Trade organic cocoa butter
3 teaspoons organic coconut or olive oil
5-10 drops peppermint essential oil
recycled containers

What to do:

Slowly melt ingredients in a double boiler or in 30-second spurts in microwave. Cool slightly and fill recycled containers. You may need to adjust the ratio of ingredients to suit your liking. Yum!
