Top 10 Toxic Products You Don’t Need

Top 10 Toxic Products You Don’t Need

2. Fragrance products: Chemical fragrances found in everyday products like air fresheners, dryer sheets, and perfumes can trigger asthma. Some of the chemicals mimic estrogen, a process that may increase the risk of breast cancer. For example, diethyl phthalate (DEP) is absorbed through the skin and can accumulate in human fat tissue. Phthalates are suspected carcinogens and hormone disruptors that are increasingly being linked to reproductive disorders. To be safe, choose fragrance-free products or use those scented with natural fragrances like essential oils.

3. Canned food: It’s probably shocking to find a food item on a toxic product list, but it’s no mistake. Food cans are lined with bisphenol-A (BPA). Most experts believe this is our main source of exposure to BPA, which has been linked to early puberty, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression in young girls and much more. Many food brands have gone BPA free, including Campbell’s Soup. But beware: some companies have switched to BPS, BPA’s chemical cousin, which has been linked many of the same health effects. To be safe, opt for fresh, frozen, dried or jarred foods.

4. Dirty cleaners: Admit it: it’s a bit odd to wipe toxic chemicals all over your oven, floors, counters, and toilets to get them “clean.” Corrosive or caustic cleaners, such as the lye and acids found in drain cleaners, oven cleaners and acid-based toilet bowl cleaners are the most dangerous cleaning products because they burn skin, eyes and internal tissue easily. It’s simple and effective to use non-toxic cleaners or to make your own. You won’t miss the toxic fumes in your home either!

5. Pesticides: This is a huge category of products, but they deserve inclusion in their entirety because of how extremely toxic they are. They’re made to be. That’s how they kill things. But, solving your pest problem may leave you with another problem – residual poisons that linger on surfaces, contaminate air, and get tracked onto carpet from the bottom of shoes. There are so many non-toxic ways to eliminate pests and weeds. Next time, get on the offense without chemicals.

6. Bottled water: Americans buy half a billion bottles of water every week, according to the film The Story of Bottled Water. Most people buy bottled water thinking they’re avoiding any contaminants that may be present in their tap water. For the most part, they’re wrong. Bottled water can be just as, or even more, contaminated than tap water. In fact, some bottled water IS tap water – just packaged (in plastic that can leach chemicals into the water) and over-priced. Also, from manufacture to disposal, bottled water creates an enormous amount of pollution, making our water even less drinkable. Do yourself and the world a favor and invest in a reusable stainless steel water bottle and a water filter.

7. Lead lipstick: Can you believe lead, a known neurotoxin that has no safe level of exposure, is found in women’s lipsticks? A study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered lead in 400 lipsticks tested, at levels two times higher than found in a previous FDA study. There is no safe level of lead exposure. Pregnant women and children are at special risk, as lead can interfere with normal brain development. To find a safe lipstick, as well as other personal care products like shampoo and lotion, check out the Skin Deep Database.

8. Nonstick Cookware: Studies show that perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), which make products stain-and stick resistant, are linked to cancer and low birth weights. They are incredibly persistent and can now be found all over the globe, including in the bodies of polar bears. Not only are PFCs found in cookware, but microwave popcorn bags and pizza boxes, some dental flosses, furniture and clothing. To steer clear of PFCs, avoid products made with Teflon or list ingredients beginning with “fluoro” or “perfluoro.”

9. Triclosan: This antibacterial agent is found in soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes, deodorants, and even clothing. Studies have found triclosan may harm the human immune system, which makes people more likely to develop allergies, and reduces muscle strength in humans and animals. The FDA warns consumers to read labels for triclosan and recommends using plain soap to clean up. Instead of using antibacterial hand sanitizers made with triclosan, choose an alternative made with at least 60 percent alcohol.

10. Oil-based paints and finishes: There are 300 toxic chemicals and 150 carcinogens potentially present in oil-based paint, according to a John Hopkins University study. Still interested in coating your walls and furniture with this gunk? I hope not. Look for water-based options – ideally those that are low- or no-VOC. You could also explore natural finishes like milk paint and vegetable or wax-based wood finishes. What’s at the top of your list of toxic products you don’t need?

Is Organic Food More Nutritious Than Conventional? Large Study Says Yes.

Is Organic Food More Nutritious Than Conventional? Large Study Says Yes.

A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition analyzing 343 studies that compare the nutritional value of organic to conventional produce delivers a pretty convincing verdict: organic produce IS better than food grown with pesticides.

The authors of the study found statistically significant differences between organic and non-organic crops, particularly in antioxidant values. Antioxidants are nutrients that destroy cell-damaging free radicals linked with aging and disease. In addition to higher levels of vitamins and minerals, certain other nutrients such as phenolic acids, flavanones, flavonols, and anthocyanins were 19%, 69%, 50%, and 51% higher in organic produce, respectively.

These compounds have been linked to a reduced risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases and some forms of cancer.

Not only are organic fruits and vegetables more nutritious than conventional produce, researchers found significantly lower levels of the highly-toxic heavy metal cadmium and pesticide residues. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, in animals, chronic ingestion of cadmium causes increased blood pressure, reduced blood flow to the limbs, and especially kidney disease.

According to the CDC’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the kidneys are the primary organs targeted by chronic exposure to cadmium. Human studies show that there is a latency period of approximately 10 years after cadmium exposure before the onset of kidney damage, depending on intensity of exposure. Cadmium accumulates in the bones and reduces calcium absorption thereby affecting bone density.

While organic produce can be more expensive than conventional produce, you can save money by growing your own. You can also prioritize produce on the EWG’s “dirty dozen” list to reduce pesticide consumption.

Study Links Roundup to Obesity, Cancer, and More…

Study Links Roundup to Obesity, Cancer, and More

A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Entropy  indicates that glyphosate—the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed  killer—may be linked to gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart  disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer  and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study showed that glyphosate inhibits the function of enzymes that are  critical to enable the body to properly detoxify. Additionally, it also enhances  the damaging effects of other foodborne chemical residues and environmental  toxins.

According to the scientists who completed the study, “The industry asserts  (glyphosate) is minimally toxic to humans, but here we argue otherwise.” They  indicate that residues of glyphosate are found in foods that people are eating  on a regular basis, especially sugar, corn, soy and wheat.

The scientists behind this important study include: Anthony Samsel is a  retired science consultant and member of the Union of Concerned Scientists and  Stephanie Seneff who is a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of  Technology. They add that “Negative impact on the body is insidious and  manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout  the body.”

Pesticides have been found in many studies  to be toxic to the brain and nervous system of humans.

There is no good reason to use glyphosate or other toxic chemicals on lawns,  agriculture, or food.  Many of these chemicals used in creating “picture-perfect” lawns or in agricultural use are seeping into groundwater and  the residues find their way into our food supply.  The harm to living  organisms appears to outweigh any alleged benefits concocted by corporate  marketing departments.

Many scientists and environmentalists have been warning about the dangers of  glyphosate to plants, animals and people for many years.

Monsanto is the developer of Roundup herbicide as well as the  genetically-modified seeds that have been altered to withstand being sprayed by  Roundup.

The Benefits of Organic vs Conventional Food

The Benefits of Organic vs Conventional Food

The debate between organic and conventionally produced food continues, and a  new infographic (below) produced by well.org gives more statistics to consider. The creators  focused on the  unhealthiest conventional foods, what meat looks like from both  a  grain-fed and  a grass-fed cow, and the nutrient differences between   organically and conventionally grown products.

Researchers have conducted many studies on whether organic foods are  more  nutritious than conventionally grown foods, and the results are  varied,  depending on what study you go by. This infographic states that  they have one  quarter more nutrients than nonorganic. One of the most  well-known and  frequently cited study, done by Stanford University  scientists, looked at over  forty years of data comparing the two types  of food, and concluded that organic  foods are no more nutritious nor  more likely to be contaminated. However, critics of that research say organic is still superior,  as  it excludes antibiotics and artificial growth hormones, high  fructose corn  syrup, artificial sweeteners and dyes, pesticides, and  sewage sludge from being  present.

An interesting thing to note is the three countries that eat the most   organic foods. Per capita, they are Denmark, Switzerland and Austria.  According  to the CIA World Factbook, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria  are all in the top  25 percent ranking of countries with the highest life  expectancies, with all  three ahead of the United States. In a 2012  study by Bloomberg, Switzerland  ranked as the fourth healthiest country in the world. These could be  coincidences, of course, but lend more credence to the benefits of buying  organic.

Perhaps the most surprising section of the infographic is when it  states  what are the best foods to buy organic. Beef and milk make the  list, as the  controversy over antibiotics and artificial growth hormones like rBGH being added to them are  well known. But did you realize that  conventionally produced celery, popcorn  and tomato sauce contain very  high amounts of chemicals and pesticides? Or  that, just as important as  the quality of food you buy, is the type of cookware  you prepare it  with? The makers of the graphic recommend you buy “organic  cookware,”  meaning avoid plastic, aluminum, and Teflon “nonstick” coated  cookware  in the kitchen. Instead, sites like organicgardening.com say you can   safely use cast iron, stainless steel, glass and stoneware cooking pots  and  pans for all your culinary needs.

It’s important to do your research when choosing whether or not to  buy  organic. There are many factors involved in choosing produce and  meats, and  different products have different risks and possible health  benefits associated  with buying it organic or conventionally grown.

Eating organic saves us money in the long run because we offset all of the healthcare costs
