  • I’ve been diagnosed, not defined, see the real me: “I am not a diagnostic or a statistic. I still have feelings, thoughts, dreams, hopes and plans. There are many things I can still do. I am not sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home staring out the window—not yet. I am a vibrant, loving person. Always remember: I have Alzheimer’s, it does not have me.”
  • I can’t do this alone, help me: “I need you to help me find ways to succeed at helping others and in doing something significant with my life. I am very capable of putting thoughts together and expressing them. I sometimes need help understanding things, but that does not mean that I don’t understand. I sometimes need help expressing things, but that doesn’t mean I have no thoughts, and nothing to say. Help me when I need it, and let me do all I can, while I still can.”
  • I am worthy, respect me: “I need to feel that what I say and do matters. I have much yet to offer the world. In many ways, I have more to offer than someone who has not read the final chapter of their life yet. I have lived life, my life, and I am worthy of respect, just as I was before.”
  • I am scared, comfort me: “I am scared of the unknown. I don’t know if I have six months to communicate, or six years. I worry about going to bed at night and whether I’m going to be as bad tomorrow. This disease is with you 24/7. It’s my brain and I can’t get away from it—it is a scary thing.”
  • I crave compassion, love me: “I need to feel loved and needed, and that my contribution to life matters and helps someone else. I need to feel loved and not rejected because of my diagnosis. I need people to meet and accept me where I am at, right now…It’s important to understand that I don’t understand. I don’t have any idea why I forget some things and remember others. It’s not intentional—I just don’t have the ability to realize what I’m doing wrong.”

Helping those affected by Alzheimers

The heartbreaking reality is that almost every person reading this post will in some way be affected by Alzheimer’s disease. While nothing can truly prepare you for the emotional, financial and spiritual gauntlet that is dementia, it is possible for each of us to help create a better world for those with the condition.

Ultimately, it’s about making Alzheimer’s awareness an ongoing effort—not just for one month out of the year. And while donating money is a helpful step, perhaps a more profound donation is that of the time necessary to educate ourselves (and others) about the realities of the disease and the challenges faced by those who have it.

As science strives for a medicinal cure, we must do our best to support those for whom such a cure will probably come too late—the five million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, and their families.

Three of these families have shared their story in the online narrative: “Fade to Blank: Life Inside Alzheimer’s” as a way to help others understand the true impact of the disease on the lives of patients and their loved ones. Their raw, unfiltered perspective offers a glimpse into a complex world of love, fear, hope and anguish.

Boost Metabolism While You Sleep

According to a recent study, the temperature of your bedroom actually has a direct impact on your fat composition, and potentially your metabolism. How so? It turns out that cooler temperatures result in an increase in brown fat, a metabolically active fat that, until recently, was not thought to exist in adults. Brown fat has been shown to burn ordinary white fat and increase insulin sensitivity. Adults contain mere teaspoonfuls within their necks and upper backs, but according to a study published in Diabetes, it can be altered by changing your sleeping habitat.

In the study, five young, healthy men slept in a controlled room with a controlled diet for 4 months — the first and third months spent sleeping at a neutral 75 degrees, the second month a cool 66, and the final month a very warm 81. Their findings were quite astounding. The men, while remaining neutral in the 75 degree bedrooms, actually doubled their levels of brown fat and improved their insulin sensitivity during their month in the 66 degree bedroom. This is because cooler temperatures, while still being above shivering, activate brown fat deposits, which start increasing and fervently burning fuel. Their ignition also improves the body’s sensitivity to the hormone insulin, which is an important finding for diabetes and insulin resistance research.

On the other hand, the volunteers’ time spent sleeping in the 81 degree bedroom actually reduced their initial quantities of metabolically active brown fat, meaning they had less than they started out with. Luckily, this study shows that brown fat levels are not stagnant, and may be adjusted as easily as turning the thermostat down while you sleep. Plus, the lower heating bill can’t hurt in the winter!

Brown fat is mostly found in great quantities in infants and young children, gradually decreasing with age, as the elderly show the least amount. How else can you increase the brown fat you do possess? All-mighty exercise actually has the potential to morph some of your white fat into brown and burn more calories. It also helps to eat a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet and keep a positive outlook on life if you are looking to shed some pounds. If nothing else, that will help with anything.

The Surprising Reason Chocolate is SO Darn Healthy

Chocolate is something of a miracle food — it can ease depression, boost circulation, lower blood pressure, and even help you lose weight. In a strange correlation, it could even make you more likely to win a Nobel Prize! To think, all of this bang in one, tiny, delectable package. But, why? How do the compounds in chocolate react in our bodies to produce such dramatic results? The answer lies within you.

In keeping with the wave of interest in our microbiomes and their effect on our health, recent research shows that the good bacteria in our stomachs, like Bifidobacterium, actually thrive on chocolate. That’s right, your good bacteria love chocolate just as much as you do. Within these bacteria, the chocolate gets fermented and converted into various, anti-inflammatory compounds. These anti-inflammatories then travel throughout the body, spreading their good cheer, so to speak, to the heart, brain, blood, and beyond.

These findings, unveiled at a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society, come from research associated with the cocoa solids — cocoa powder — so no sugar was present (which feeds less desirable gut dwellers). The powder is known to contain several antioxidants, known as polyphenols, and a bit of fiber — which keeps it moving along when digested. All of this makes bitter cocoa an ideal fuel for the hungry, friendly bacteria in your digestive system — and you can be sure they will pass on the benefits to you. Their feast can result in higher endorphins, less depression, and enhanced heart health, among countless other benefits, for you. A couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder in your smoothie might be just the trick to balance out health and deliciousness for a perfect breakfast!

Remember, not all chocolate is created equal. If you opt for a chocolate bar, be sure it is dark, as in 85% or greater. Too much sugar could negate the benefits. If that’s too bitter for your taste, add a small dollop of raw honey to very dark chocolate for a double-whammy of health benefits and palatable sweetness.

Without your microcosm of gut bacteria, chocolate might not pose nearly as many benefits to your health. Keep your gut balanced with probiotics and a balanced diet — and make sure to give your micro-critter friends a big thank-you with a health-boosting treat of dark chocolate once in a while.

6 Mood-Boosting Foods

 

Can you eat your way to a better mood? More and more scientific research is saying so. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is important for your general health, so why should it be any different for your mental health? From depression-fighting seeds to anxiety-zapping greens, read about the best nutrients for your mood.

 

1. Sesame Seeds.

Good things come in small packages. The unassuming sesame seed is loaded with mood-boosting nutrients. Sesame seeds are on of the best vegetarian sources of zinc, a mineral that has been linked to depression and anxiety. One study found that zinc treatment lowered the depression and anger levels of young women. Other studies have suggested using the mineral as a treatment for depression.

 

2. Chocolate.

A few bites of real, dark chocolate each day will help your mood and your tastebuds! Studies have suggested that dark chocolate reduces the level of cortisol, a stress hormone, in your body; it may also relieve anxiety. Leesa recommends 85% organic dark chocolate from Vivani!

 

3. Spinach.

As if you needed another reason to love spinach! This leafy green is loaded with all sorts of mood-boosting nutrients, from depression-fighting folates (more on that later) to anxiety-easing magnesium. Spinach also contains plenty of zinc — studies have shown that, the less zinc you have in your body, the more likely you are to be depressed.

 

4. Yogurt.

Yogurt is an excellent vegetarian source of vitamin B12, a vital nutrient for the formation of red blood cells. For reasons scientists aren’t exactly clear on yet, B vitamins seem to play a vital role in our mental health. Vitamin B12 deficiencies in particular have been linked to high rates of depression, and studies have suggested that strong intake of the vitamin may improve depression treatment outcomes. If your body doesn’t get enough of the stuff, it can actually lead to serious mental health issues. Because plants cannot make Vitamin B12, your best sources for the stuff are dairy products, eggs, seafood, and meat. Vegans and older adults are especially at risk of a Vitamin B12 deficiency, and may want to talk with their doctors about supplements or fortified foods.

5. Lentils.

Lentils, along with other foods rich in folic acid, are a key nutrient for treating depression. Like it’s B vitamin cousin, vitamin B12, plenty of research has linked low levels of folic acid to depression. It’s also thought that high levels of the vitamin will actually help anti-depressants work more effectively.  Healthy carbs help boost serotonin levels.

Other Foods Rich in Folates: Pinto, black, navy, kidney & garbanzo beans; spinach, asparagus, turnip greens and broccoli.

6. Flaxseeds.

The countries with the lowest rates of depression tend to have one thing in common: they also eat the most fish. Scientists think this is because fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that these polysaturated fats can improve your mood, and help treat depression and postpartum depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Though fish is probably your best source of omega-3 fatty acids, most healthy people can get all of it they need from flaxseeds and flaxseed oil. You can also check out supplements or sea vegetables if you are a vegan or a vegetarian.

Super Bowl and TIME Magazine Both Focus on Mindfulness

 

Guess what, we all meditate! We may be unaware of this because we believe meditation means sitting still and closing our eyes. However, the moment we focus attention on one thing and bring the mind into a quiet place then we are meditating, which means it can be as much active as it is being still.

The most well-known forms of meditation are watching the flow of the breath or repeating a mantra, as these focus the mind. But it could just as easily be mindfully throwing a football or the stroke of a brush as you paint; most meditation traditions do walking meditation as well as sitting practice. This is meditation in action, which is mindfulness: awareness of the present moment.

“The Seahawks believe their kinder, gentler philosophy is the future of football,” says Alyssa Roenigk in ESPN The Magazine. So could mindfulness and meditation be a way to win the Super Bowl? The Seahawks obviously believe that it can. They are taught yoga and sitting meditation as a part of their training, as it’s difficult to be focused if they are distracted by a monkey mind jumping from thought to thought.

“Meditation is as important as lifting weights and being out here on the field for practice,” says Russell Okung of the Seahawks. “It’s about quieting your mind and getting into certain states where everything outside of you doesn’t matter in that moment. There are so many things telling you that you can’t do something, but you take those thoughts captive, take power over them and change them.”

Meditation focuses the mind in one place and this equally applies to the Denver Broncos, even if they may not knowingly meditate. In football, mindfulness is needed for the accuracy of a touch-down pass down the field, or the presence to know when to throw or when to run with the football: Payton Manning’s great passes are made mindfully, Knowshaun Moreno runs with awareness, Eric Decker receives in the moment!

We taught meditation to the Torquay United Football team in England, sitting in the men’s locker room. They were at the bottom of their league but won their next game, which meant they advanced to the next division. Filmed by the BBC on the 6:00pm evening news, the coach was convinced that the mindfulness training had enabled the players to stay positive, despite being in such a losing position.

As our partner, Brian Jones says: “Meditation is as much something that happens to us as, as something we do, like the “ah-ha” moment when we first learn to ride a bike. All of a sudden it just makes sense, becomes familiar, and comfortable. Meditation and mindfulness, like riding a bike, are about embodiment, self-mastery, and self-fulfillment.”

TIME Magazine agrees. The Feb 3rd issue focuses on mindfulness, the far-reaching effect it is having in all walks of life, and on Jon Kabat-Zinn, who brought mindfulness to hospitals and clinics, through his Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

“People come with a huge amount of pain and suffering, both physical and emotional,” says Kabat-Zinn in our Award Winning book, Be The Change. “Through the cultivation of mindfulness, they develop a more functional relationship with that suffering, they turn towards it, open to it, and actually befriend it to a degree rather than insisting that it stop, and in the process, the pain often transforms or even falls away… For the most part, they will tell you that they are more in touch with their own beauty than they may have been since they were children.”

Whether we sit in formal meditation with our eyes closed, go for a walk or throw a football, if we do it with awareness we are meditating. We can sit with our eyes closed but if our mind is scattered then there’s no stillness, while we can be running everywhere playing competitive sport but if our mind is focused and aware then we are being mindful. A clear and comprehensivetraining in mindfulness is vital, so it can become integral to every part of our life. Play to win: practice mindfulness!

Thoughts pass in and out of our minds all day, but how many of them actually stick with us? Immersing yourself in the creativity of others will help you to become more creative and open-minded in your own life.

Practice meditation. Whether you use visualization techniques or you release your mind during gentleyogameditation clears the garbage from your head and makes room for profound thought. Mindfulness in life can reduce stress, increase awareness, and make you a generally better person to be around. Think you don’t have time? If you have time to check your Facebook in the morning, you have time for 5-10 minutes of meditation.

Embrace silence. Don’t just turn the television on when you get home from work or spend your evening perusing other peoples’ Pinterest walls. Silence is a rare and beautiful thing. Cut the visual and audial pyrotechnics for a night and find out what you are drawn to. Perhaps you’ll enjoy your dinner a little bit more. Perhaps you’ll pick up that old tome you’ve always meant to read. Perhaps you’ll discover a new hobby entirely. Distractions discourage creativity, so shut down your electronics for the evening and get reacquainted with your unplugged self.

Be in nature. Go back to your roots. Literally, the roots in your backyard or nearest nature preserve. Sit under a tree and just be. Hear the birds chirping, notice that chipmunk absconding a squirrel’s nut stash, watch the stars develop at dusk. If you are a little more adventurous, take a trip into the wilderness and feel the bonds of constant societal distraction slide off your body. Don’t let winter stop you. Even a stroll through the park can put everything into perspective.

Why is it that we, as a general society, don’t think about things as deeply as we could? Is it because we have the Internet, so we foolishly think we know everything? Is it because we are driven to try to become more and more comfortable and the act of profound thought is sometimes harsh and distressing? With machines doing most of our tasks and thinking for us, we have to push away complacency and throw ourselves into the art of life. We live in a beautiful age in which we don’t need to spare thought for menial tasks, so let your creativity flourish and empower your mind with thought.

4 Countries With the Right Approach to Dementia Care

 

By the year 2050, 277 million aging adults are expected to be dependent on  others for personal care. Of those 277 million, approximately half will be  struggling with symptoms of dementia, according to the newly released World  Alzheimer’s Report 2013. (Discover the common signs  of dementia.)

“All governments should make dementia a priority,” according to the authors  of the report, which calls upon policymakers across the globe to “transform  their system of priorities” and infuse dementia research and support efforts  with a tenfold increase in funding.

These statements echo the pleas made over the years by countless individuals  and advocacy groups; a universal cry to address the threat of the “silver  tsunami” that looms ever larger in the world’s rear view mirror.

The report itself highlights many current caregiving issues that advocates  warn will only become more concerning as time goes on. Why are family  caregivers so undervalued? What factors force people to place their loved  one in a long-term care facility? How can we preserve the quality of life of  individuals with dementia and their caregivers?

Progress is being made to address each of these problems, with different  countries adopting different strategies to find a solution to the dementia  care crisis.

The United States joins eleven other countries (Norway, Australia,  Netherlands, Scotland, Denmark, Finland, England, Wales, France, Republic of  Korea and Northern Ireland) in releasing a formal plan to address Alzheimer’s  and other dementias in their respective domains.

Improving support (both financial and emotional) for those affected by  dementia, enhancing the quality of care provided by long-term care facilities  and reducing the overall costs associated with dementia top the lists of  priorities in these plans.

Similar aims, different approaches

The global community appears to agree on the overall goals of dementia care,  but a surprising number of differences in execution occur, depending on  geography and cultural practices.

“Different places are going to have different variations in care,” says Cathy  Greenblatt, PhD, author of Love, Loss and Laughter: Seeing Alzheimer’s  Differently. “But the same things that are important in Florida are important in  Bangalore.”

After watching her grandparents (both of whom had dementia) receive little  more than maintenance care in a local facility, Greenblatt acquired a dim view  of dementia care. “The people working with my grandparents had bought in to the  idea that they were ‘gone.’ I grew up with no evidence that any kind of care  could make a meaningful difference.”

After retiring from her professorial post at Rutgers University,  Greenblatt—inspired by her childhood experiences with her grandparents and a  budding passion for photography—crisscrossed the globe in search of examples of  high quality dementia care.

Despite the cultural disparities and ideological differences of the regions  Greenblatt visited there was one central theme that united them all. No matter  which country she found herself in—India, Japan, France, or the Dominican  Republic—Greenblatt discovered that the best dementia care practices were the  ones that focused on celebrating the ongoing humanity of the person with the  disease. “The things that make a difference are the things that are  universal—treating people with dignity, being in the moment,” she says.

Here are just a few examples of the ways different countries are infusing  dignity into dementia care:

India: Money is always a significant factor when caring for  someone with dementia, no matter what side of the Equator they live on. Having  fewer finances often amplifies the burden of dementia on a person and their  family. But low-income elders in Cochin, India receive special treatment, thanks  to a group of professional staff and volunteers from the Alzheimer’s and Related  Disorders Society of India (ARDSI). While traveling around India, Greenblatt  visited the home of a woman with advanced dementia whose bed consisted of little  more than a wooden frame with a piece of cardboard over it. Still the woman was  able to receive a treatment plan and regular in-home visits from ARDSI  caregivers and social workers.

France: Greenblatt describes the remarkable transformation  of a dementia-stricken Frenchman named Marcel. In a special Snoezelen room at  the Villa Helios in Nice, France, Marcel, whose condition was causing him to act  angry and violent, was changed into a gentler, more caring soul. Snoezelen rooms  are used to calm those with cognitive disorders, such as autism  and dementia. They contain an array of different sensory stimuli, including  water beds, soothing scents, soft lighting, and even big water tubes with  bubbles piped into them.

The Netherlands: Just beyond the outskirts of Amsterdam lies  Hogewey, a quaint village occupied by just over a hundred people. The town has a  theatre, a grocery store, a beauty salon, restaurants and cafes. What makes  Hogewey different from the traditional European hamlet is the fact that nearly  half of its inhabitants have moderate or severe dementia. The remaining “residents” are in fact specially-trained caregivers who pose as beauticians and  restaurant staff, all the while making sure those with cognitive impairment  remain safe and calm.  The so-called “dementia village” is actually an innovative care facility  designed to make those suffering from memory loss feel as though they are living  regular lives and remain engaged with their environment. Residents’ rooms are  decorated based on their hobbies and interests, food preparation and service are  tailored towards individual preferences and there are always staff members  available to provide hands-on care for those who need it. Other caregivers  surreptitiously keep an eye on the residents as they go out shopping or to the  salon, always ready to step in and make sure no one endangers themselves. The  village’s single exit is manned by a staffer who tells any approaching resident  that the door is either broken or barred and offers an alternative path. This  prevents residents from wandering away and becoming lost—an especially common  concern for those with profound dementia.

The United Kingdom: The Pan-London Dementia Action Alliance  recently announced a formal push to make London the world’s first  dementia-friendly capital city. Unlike Hogewey—a self-contained village created  specifically for those with dementia—London aims to integrate the  cognitively-impaired into its pre-existing metropolis more effectively. This  will involve the coordination of countless smaller initiatives, such as making  landmarks more accessible and instructing fire fighters, policemen and bus  drivers how to identify and communicate with the dementia-stricken.

Across the world, person-centered dementia care is rapidly replacing the  outdated paradigms that relegated the cognitively impaired to wheelchairs in  locked wards.

Greenblatt is cheered by these shifting tides because that means fewer and  fewer people with dementia will be treated like her grandparents were. “It’s a  tragic disease and you have no control over the cards you’re dealt. But you do  have control over how you play the hand. There are ways to make the situation  livable for everyone involved.”

Study Links Roundup to Obesity, Cancer, and More

 

A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Entropy  indicates that glyphosate—the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed  killer—may be linked to gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart  disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer  and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study showed that glyphosate inhibits the function of enzymes that are  critical to enable the body to properly detoxify. Additionally, it also enhances  the damaging effects of other foodborne chemical residues and environmental  toxins.

According to the scientists who completed the study, “The industry asserts  (glyphosate) is minimally toxic to humans, but here we argue otherwise.” They  indicate that residues of glyphosate are found in foods that people are eating  on a regular basis, especially sugar, corn, soy and wheat.

The scientists behind this important study include: Anthony Samsel is a  retired science consultant and member of the Union of Concerned Scientists and  Stephanie Seneff who is a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of  Technology. They add that “Negative impact on the body is insidious and  manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout  the body.”

Pesticides have been found in many studies  to be toxic to the brain and nervous system of humans.

There is no good reason to use glyphosate or other toxic chemicals on lawns,  agriculture, or food.  Many of these chemicals used in creating “picture-perfect” lawns or in agricultural use are seeping into groundwater and  the residues find their way into our food supply.  The harm to living  organisms appears to outweigh any alleged benefits concocted by corporate  marketing departments.

Many scientists and environmentalists have been warning about the dangers of  glyphosate to plants, animals and people for many years.

Monsanto is the developer of Roundup herbicide as well as the  genetically-modified seeds that have been altered to withstand being sprayed by  Roundup.

10 Risk Factors and Warning Signs of a Stroke

According to an American Heart Association survey, young adults have a  disconnect about how their lifestyle choices affect their chances of stroke, a  leading cause of death and disability in the United States.

More than 1,200 adults between the ages of 18 and 44 were surveyed on their  thoughts about health and stroke risk.

Of the 18-24 year-old group, most expressed desire to live a healthy and long  life — 98 years was their average desire — but one-third of those said they  don’t think their unhealthy behaviors today will affect their risk of stroke  later. Eighteen percent couldn’t even name one stroke risk factor.

Ralph Sacco, M.D., neurologist and president of the American Heart  Association/American Stroke Association, said in a press release:

“This survey shows the dangerous disconnect that  many young Americans have about how their behaviors affect their risks for  stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Starting healthy behaviors at a young  age is critical to entering middle age in good shape. The investment you make in  your health now will have a large payoff as you age. We want everyone – especially young people – to strive to avoid stroke, which can affect anyone at  any age.”

The survey also indicated that people become more aware of their overall  health as they age:

  • In the 35-44 year-old group, 22 percent were not worried about  cardiovascular diseases.
  • In the 18-24 year-old group, 43 percent said they weren’t concerned.

Lifestyle Choices to Lower Stroke Risk

Healthy lifestyle choices can lower risk of a first stroke by almost 80  percent, according to American Heart Association/American Stroke Association  guidelines. Those choices include:

Risk Factors for Stroke

  • Age: The chance of having a stroke approximately doubles  for each decade of life after age 55. While stroke is common among the  elderly, a lot of people under 65 also have strokes.
  • Heredity/Race: Your stroke risk is greater if a parent,  grandparent, sister or brother has had a stroke. African-Americans have a higher  risk of death from a stroke than Caucasians.
  • Gender: Stroke is more common in men than in women, but  more than half of total stroke deaths occur in women.
  • Health Conditions: Having high blood pressure, diabetes,  heart disease, sickle cell disease, or high blood cholesterol raise your risk of  stroke.
  • Prior Stroke, TIA, or Heart Attack: The risk of stroke is  many times greater for someone who has already had one. Transient ischemic  attacks (TIAs) produce stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage, and if you’ve  had one or more TIAs, you’re 10 times more likely to have a stroke than someone  of the same age and sex who hasn’t. If you’ve had a heart  attack, you’re at higher risk of having a stroke, too.

Warning Signs of Stroke

  • sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side  of the body
  • sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you, or someone near you should experience these symptoms, immediately  call 9-1-1.

Facts About Stroke

  • About 795,000 Americans each year have a stroke.
  • Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year, making it the third leading  cause of death, after diseases of the heart and cancer.
  • About 40 percent of stroke deaths occur in males, and 60 percent in  females.

Feeling the heat? A heatwave stretching across much of the U.S. has many of us  seeking relief, but it’s prime time for heat-related illness to strike.

In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather  events, including floods, according to the American Red Cross. Our bodies lose  water and salt when we perspire, which can lead to heat cramps. If not  addressed, dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion leads to  heatstroke, a potentially life-threatening condition.

Young children, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases are most at risk of developing heat cramps,  heat exhaustion, or heatstroke. Do you know how to lower your risk of  heat-related illness…would you recognize the warning signs, and would you know  what to do should heat-related illness strike?

Tips to Avoid Heat-Related Illness

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabric like  cotton.
  • When outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Choose shade over the sun on a hot day.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise during a heatwave.
  • Drink plenty of water or other fluids.
  • If you feel overheated, take a cool shower or bath.
  • Avoid sitting in a hot car or leaving your child in the car. (And that goes  for pets, too!)
  • Take advantage of cooling centers during a prolonged hot spell.
  • Listen to weather advisories before planning outdoor events.
  • Check on people who live alone, especially the elderly or ill.

Risk Factors for Heat-Related Illness

  • prolonged exposure to high temperatures
  • high levels of humidity
  • dehydration

You are at increased risk if you:

  • have heart disease or other chronic illness
  • are drinking alcohol
  • exercise excessively
  • take certain medications like diuretics and beta blockers

Early Warning Signs of Heat-Related Illness

  • fatigue
  • thirst
  • muscle cramps
  • profuse sweating

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion

  • dizziness and lightheadedness
  • weakness
  • headache
  • nausea and vomiting
  • cool, moist skin
  • dark urine

Symptoms of Heatstroke

  • fast, shallow breathing
  • pulse is fast and weak
  • confusion and strange behavior
  • fever
  • skin is red, hot, and dry
  • seizures
  • loss of consciousness

First Aid for Heat-Related Illness

  • Take the victim to a cool place.
  • Have them lie down with their feet up.
  • Apply cool, wet cloths (or cool water alone) to their skin. Cold compresses  can also help.
  • If the person is conscious, have them drink water or a salted drink. Do not  offer drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine.

When to Call 9-1-1

Consider it a medical emergency if the victim:

  • appears to have blue lips and fingernails
  • has a high fever
  • has difficulty breathing
  • has a seizure
  • is confused or behaving irrationally
  • has lost consciousness
