Lycopene, the Powerful Nutrient That May Help Prevent Cancer

Lycopene is what gives red fruits and vegetables their bright red color. You will find lycopene in red foods like tomatoes, watermelon, apricots, red grapefruit, guava, red carrots, papaya and rose hips.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that inhibits free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that have an unpaired electron and are therefore unstable. The molecule stabilizes itself by stealing electrons from live cell membranes. This damages the cell and promotes disease.

The super antioxidant, Lycopene neutralizes free radicals by binding to them and stabilizing them. The free radicals no longer create cell damage that can result in diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Lycopene has been found to help reduce prostate, lung, pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast, and cervix and stomach cancers according to Scientific studies.

As you can see above, tomato products are high sources of lycopene — but raw tomato is significantly lower.

“The best sources of lycopene are tomatoes and tomato products, which is where about 80 percent of lycopene in the average American diet comes from.” says the Physician Committee for Responsible Health

According to the Oxford Journals, consuming tomatoes and tomato-based products have been shown to lower risk of a variety of cancers. The cancers which responded the most were the lung, stomach, and prostate gland.  Research also indicated that lycopene may be preventive for cancers of the breast, cervix, oral cavity, colorectum, esophagus, and pancreas. Studies go on to say that it is important to consume tomatoes and tomato products rather than purified lycopene supplements.

Cancer and Tomatoes

  • Tomatoes reduce breast cancer due to high amounts of carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene and total carotenoids), according to research from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
  • Tomatoes may help prevent prostate cancer. A study found that men who ate more than 10 portions of tomatoes or tomato products per week have an 18 percent reduced risk of prostate cancer compared to men who ate less than ten.

How To Get Lycopene In Your Diet

  • The best way to get lycopene into the body is to cook with tomatoes and eat them in a meal that provides a small amount of fat. One study showed that when oil was added to heated tomato juice, the blood lycopene levels increased more than when plain, unheated tomato was consumed. Now, that obviously doesn’t mean you should eat lots of chips with ketchup thinking you are helping prevent cancer. Too much oil has its own health risks.
  • As said above, lycopene supplement extracts do not work well. This is most likely because there are other phytochemicals in tomatoes that may be needed to do the job. Eat real food: eat your fruits and vegetables!
  • Don’t forget watermelon! Although a slice of watermelon has only one half the amount of lycopene as a glass of tomato juice, think about how much watermelon you can eat! Watermelon makes a great breakfast just by itself.  This is important for those who don’t like tomatoes or avoid them because they are in the nightshade produce family.

The Spice that Could Help Boost Memory in Just One Hour

While conducting the research for my upcoming book 60 Seconds to Boost Your Brain Power (Rodale, 2015), I came across an exciting study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study explored the effects of one of turmeric’s active ingredients known as curcumin on sixty healthy adults aged sixty to eighty-five to determine whether the spice has any short- or long-term memory or cognitive effects.

Conducted at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, researches assessed the mental effects of curcumin supplementation after one hour, three hours, and four weeks. They conducted multiple tests to determine whether the participants had any mood, cognitive, or blood marker effects that might indicate curcumin’s immediate or long-term effects. In just one hour after taking the supplement the participants showed significant performance improvement on memory and attention tasks compared to the placebo group.

The participants had many impressive results after four weeks of treatment with curcumin as well. The scientists indicated that working memory, energy levels, calmness and contentedness (as measures of mood), and even fatigue induced by psychological stress were significantly improved following the long-term treatment with the supplement. Participants also had lower cholesterol levels after taking the curcumin supplement.

Even Alzheimer’s patients with severe symptoms, including dementia, irritability, agitation, anxiety, and apathy, showed excellent therapeutic results when taking curcumin in a study published in the Japanese medical journal Ayu. When participants took 764 mg of turmeric with a standardized amount of 100 mg/day of curcumin for twelve weeks, they “started recovering from these symptoms without any adverse reaction in the clinical symptom and laboratory data.” After three months of treatment the patients’ symptoms and their reliance on caregivers significantly decreased. After one year of treatment two of the patients recognized their family members when they were unable to do so at the outset of the study. In one of the cases the person had a 17 percent improvement on their Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score.

The study results were achieved using a brand of curcumin called Longvida; however there are many other excellent brands. Ideally choose a standardized extract of curcumin. Follow package directions. Consult your physician prior to taking curcumin. In my upcoming book 60 Seconds to Boost Your Brain Power (Rodale, 2015), I recommend 400 mg of curcumin three times daily for people suffering from brain disorders, working with a physician.

Chocolate, bones and nuts, can be toxic or even fatal to pets.

1. Chocolate is toxic to all animals and in particular small dogs. It can cause vomiting, hyperactivity, heart arrhythmias, tremors and seizures.  Chocolate contains caffeine and methylxanthines; the darker the chocolate the more toxic. It is interesting that darker chocolate is BETTER for us humans and you can make your own healthy chocolate.

2. Unbaked Bread Dough, if eaten by your pet, can expand in the stomach causing a bellyache. The yeast creates alcohol can cause seizures and respiratory failure.

3. Bones, especially from poultry and fat trimmings, either cooked or uncooked, are dangerous for dogs. A dog can choke on bones which can splinter and cause lacerations in your dog’s digestive system.

4. Spices such as nutmeg can cause seizures and even death. Sage can cause vomiting.

5. Macadamia nuts and moldy walnuts can cause seizures, lethargy, vomiting and loss of muscle control. Dogs can experience an elevated heart rate that can lead to death. Read how good mold free walnuts can be so very healthy for us humans.

 

Those raisins are tasty but not good for your pet.

6. Coffee full of caffeine can create seizures, abnormal heart rhythm and death in pets. All caffeinated drinks can have the same effect.

7. Fruitcake filled raisins and currants and yeast cam sometimes prove quite dangerous for your cats and dogs. Small amounts of these dried fruits can make dogs sick and larger amounts can cause kidney failure.

8. Onions and garlic in any form can damage red blood cells in pets leading to anemia.miastletoeSome holiday plants are poisonous and decorations can cause ill health.

9. Holly can cause intense vomiting, diarrhea and depression.

10. Mistletoe can cause significant vomiting and diarrhea, erratic behavior, hallucinations and even death when ingested. Mistletoe kissing can be beneficial to your health, but pets just eat it.

11. Tinsel, although not toxic, if it is consumed it be fatal as it twists and bunches inside your pet’s intestines. Cats find it very attractive.

12. Strands of Lights are shocking when a pet bites into one. That one bite has been known to cause seizures and a build-up of fluid in their lungs.

It is Important That We Take Care Of Our Pet Friends.

In their innocence our pets can easily eat some of the above. Dogs like to copy us and fit in with whatever we are doing. Cats are simply very curious and will try anything. These traits of cats and dogs are some of the  reasons why we love them so much. So let’s take care of them this Christmas with healthy treats just for them.

How Fruits and Vegetables Can Help Treat Asthma

Researchers have proposed that “by eating fewer fruits and vegetables, the susceptibility to potentially harmful inhaled substances of the population as a whole may be increased because of the reduction in antioxidant defenses of the lungs.” The thin lining of fluid that forms the interface between our respiratory tract and the external environment is our first line of defense against oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is important in asthma, contributing to airway contraction, excessive mucous production, and hypersensitivity. Antioxidants protect against oxidative stress, so our lung lining contains a range of antioxidants our body makes itself, as well as those obtained from our diet, particularly from fruits and vegetables.

We can even quantify the level of oxidative stress in people by measuring the level of oxidation products in their exhaled breath, which drops as we start eating more fruits and vegetables, and drops further as we combine more plants with fewer animal foods.

Do those with asthma really have lower levels of antioxidants than people without asthma? Compared to healthy controls, subjects with asthma had lower whole blood levels of total carotenoids and lower levels of each of the individual phytonutrients they measured: cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene compared to healthy controls.

Therefore, they posit, “the accumulating evidence does suggest that diet has an influence in modulating the response of the lung to inhaled allergens and irritants. However, it is possible that the reduced carotenoid levels in asthma are a result of increased utilization in the presence of excess free radicals.” So it’s like a chicken-or-the-egg phenomenon.

We know antioxidant-rich diets have been associated with reduced asthma prevalence. However, direct evidence that altering intake of antioxidant-rich foods actually affects asthma was lacking, until now.

There are two ways to test the effects of fruits and vegetables on asthma. Add fruits and vegetables to people’s diets and see if their asthma improves, or take asthmatics and remove fruits and vegetables from their diets and see if they get worse.

The first such study of its kind placed subjects with asthma on a low antioxidant diet. After just a matter of days, there was a significant worsening of lung function and asthma control. The researchers conclude that “This finding is highly significant for subjects with asthma, as it indicates that omitting antioxidant-rich foods from the diet, for even a short time frame, will have a detrimental effect on asthma symptoms.”

Interestingly, ironically, the low antioxidant diet consumed by subjects, where they were restricted to one serving of fruit and up to two servings of vegetables per day, is typical of Western diets. In other words, the low antioxidant diet they used to worsen people’s asthma, crippling their lung function, was just like the standard American diet.

As about “half the population usually consumes a diet with an intake of fruit and vegetables equivalent to that in the study diet or less, it appears likely that this dietary pattern, which must be considered suboptimal for lung health, may have a significant impact on asthma management, indicating the potential for typical Western dietary patterns to contribute to a worsening of lung function and asthma control.”

Within just days, cutting down fruit and vegetable intake can impair lung function, but does adding fruits and vegetables help with asthma? That was the second phase of the study.

Asthmatics on the standard American diet had about a 40% chance of relapsing into an asthma exacerbation within three months. However, put them on seven servings of fruits and vegetables a day instead of three, and we cut their exacerbation rate in half, down to 20%. Imagine if there were a drug that could work as powerfully as a few fruits and vegetables.

If manipulating antioxidant intake by increasing fruit and vegetable intake can so powerfully reduce asthma exacerbation rates, why not just take antioxidant pills instead? I cover that in my video Treating Asthma With Plants vs. Supplements?

10 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Cinnamon

Modern science has now confirmed what people have instinctively known for ages. Here are 10 health benefits of cinnamon that are supported by scientific research.

1. Cinnamon is High in a Substance With Powerful Medicinal Properties

Cinnamon is a spice that is made from the inner bark of trees called Cinnamomum.

It has been used as an ingredient throughout history, dating back as far as Ancient Egypt. It used to be rare and valuable, and was regarded as a gift fit for kings.

These days, cinnamon is cheap, available in every supermarket and found in all sorts of foods and recipes.

There are two main types of cinnamon (1):

  • Ceylon cinnamon: Also known as “true” cinnamon.
  • Cassia cinnamon: This is the more common variety today, what people generally refer to as “cinnamon.”

Cinnamon is made by cutting the stems of the cinnamomum tree. The inner bark is then extracted and the woody parts removed from it.

When it dries, it forms strips that curl into rolls, called cinnamon sticks. The sticks can be ground to form cinnamon powder.

The distinct smell and flavor of cinnamon is due to the oily part, which is very high in a compound called cinnamaldehyde (2).

It is this compound that is responsible for most of cinnamon’s powerful effects on health and metabolism.

Bottom Line: Cinnamon is a popular spice. It is high in a substance called cinnamaldehyde, which is responsible for most of the health benefits.

2. Cinnamon is Loaded With Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect the body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

Cinnamon is loaded with powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols (345).

In a study that compared the antioxidant activity of 26 spices, cinnamon wound up as the clear winner, even outranking “superfoods” like garlic and oregano (6).

In fact, it is so powerful that cinnamon can be used as a natural food preservative (7).

Bottom Line: Cinnamon contains large amounts of highly potent polyphenol antioxidants.

3. Cinnamon Has Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Inflammation in the body is incredibly important. It helps the body fight infections and repair tissue damage.

However, inflammation can become a problem when it is chronic (long-term) and directed against the body’s own tissues.

Cinnamon may be useful in this regard, because some studies show that the antioxidants in it have potent anti-inflammatory activity (3).

Bottom Line: The antioxidants in cinnamon have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help lower the risk of disease.

4. Cinnamon May Cut the Risk of Heart Disease

Cinnamon has been linked with reduced risk of heart disease, the world’s most common cause of premature death.

In people with type 2 diabetes, 1 gram of cinnamon per day has beneficial effects on blood markers.

It reduces levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while HDL cholesterol remains stable (8).

More recently, a big review study concluded that a cinnamon dose of just 120 milligrams per day can have these effects. In this study, cinnamon also increased HDL (the “good”) cholesterol (9).

In animal studies, cinnamon has been shown to reduce blood pressure (3).

When combined, all these factors may drastically cut the risk of heart disease.

Bottom Line: Cinnamon can improve some key risk factors for heart disease, including cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.

5. Cinnamon Can Improve Sensitivity to The Hormone Insulin

Insulin is one of the key hormones that regulate metabolism and energy use.

It is also essential for the transport of blood sugar from the bloodstream and into cells.

The problem is that many people are resistant to the effects of insulin.

This condition, known as insulin resistance, is a hallmark of serious conditions like metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Well, the good news is that cinnamon can dramatically reduce insulin resistance, helping this incredibly important hormone to do its job (1011).

By helping insulin do its job, cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels, which brings us to the next point…

Bottom Line: Cinnamon has been shown to significantly increase sensitivity to the hormone insulin.

6. Cinnamon Lowers Blood Sugar Levels and Has a Powerful Anti-Diabetic Effect

Cinnamon is well known for its blood sugar lowering effects.

Apart from the beneficial effects on insulin resistance, cinnamon can lower blood sugar by several other mechanisms.

First, cinnamon has been shown to decrease the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream after a meal.

It does this by interfering with numerous digestive enzymes, which slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the digestive tract (1213).

Second, a compound in cinnamon can act on cells by mimicking insulin (1415).

This greatly improves glucose uptake by cells, although it acts much slower than insulin itself.

Numerous human trials have confirmed the anti-diabetic effects of cinnamon, showing that it can lower fasting blood sugar levels by up to 10-29% (161718).

The effective dose is typically 1-6 grams of cinnamon per day (around 0.5-2 teaspoons).

Bottom Line: Cinnamon has been shown to both reduce fasting blood sugar levels, having a potent anti-diabetic effect at 1 to 6 grams per day.

7. Cinnamon May Have Beneficial Effects on Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by progressive loss of the structure or function of brain cells.

Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are two of the most common types.

Two compounds found in cinnamon appear to inhibit the buildup of a protein called tau in the brain, which is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (192021).

In a study looking at mice with Parkinson’s disease, cinnamon helped to protect neurons, normalize neurotransmitter levels and improve motor function (22).

These effects need to be studied further in humans.

Bottom Line: Cinnamon has been shown to lead to various improvements for Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease in animal studies.

8. Cinnamon May Be Protective Against Cancer

Cancer is a serious disease, characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells.

Cinnamon has been widely studied for its potential use in cancer prevention and treatment.

Overall, the evidence is limited to test tube experiments and animal studies, which suggest that cinnamon extracts may protect against cancer (2324252627).

It acts by reducing the growth of cancer cells and the formation of blood vessels in tumors, and appears to be toxic to cancer cells, causing cell death.

A study in mice with colon cancer revealed cinnamon to be a potent activator of detoxifying enzymes in the colon, protecting against further cancer growth (28).

These findings were supported by test tube experiments, which showed that cinnamon activates protective antioxidant responses in human colon cells (29).

Whether cinnamon has any effect in living, breathing humans needs to be confirmed in controlled trials.

Bottom Line: Animal studies and test tube experiments indicate that cinnamon may have protective effects against cancer.

9. Cinnamon Helps Fight Bacterial and Fungal Infections

Cinnamaldehyde, the main active component of cinnamon, may help fight various kinds of infection.

Cinnamon oil has been shown to effectively treat respiratory tract infections caused by fungi.

It can also inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, including Listeria and Salmonella (3031).

The antimicrobial effects of cinnamon may also help prevent tooth decay and reduce bad breath (323334).

Bottom Line: Cinnamaldehyde has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which may reduce infections and help fight tooth decay and bad breath.

10. Cinnamon May Help Fight The HIV Virus

HIV is a virus that slowly breaks down the immune system, which can eventually lead to AIDS if untreated.

Cinnamon extracted from Cassia varieties is thought to help fight against HIV-1 (3536).

This is the most common strain of the HIV virus in humans.

A laboratory study looking at HIV infected cells found that cinnamon was the most effective treatment of all 69 medicinal plants studied (37).

Human trials are needed to confirm these effects.

Bottom Line: Test tube studies have shown that cinnamon can help fight HIV-1, the main type of HIV virus in humans.

It is Better to Use Ceylon (“True” Cinnamon)

Not all cinnamon is created equal.

The Cassia variety contains significant amounts of a compound called coumarin, which is believed to be harmful in large doses.

All cinnamon should have health benefits, but Cassia may cause problems in large doses due to the coumarin content.

Ceylon (“true” cinnamon) is much better in this regard, and studies show that it ismuch lower in coumarin than the Cassia variety (38).

Unfortunately, most cinnamon found in supermarkets is the cheaper Cassia variety.

You may be able to find Ceylon in some health food stores, and there is a good selection on Amazon.

Take Home Message

At the end of the day, cinnamon is one of the most delicious and healthiest spices on the planet.

It can lower blood sugar levels, reduce heart disease risk factors, and has a plethora of other impressive health benefits.

Just make sure to get Ceylon cinnamon, or stick to small doses (no more than 0.5-2 teaspoons a day) if you’re using the Cassia variety.

Is Organic Food More Nutritious Than Conventional? Large Study Says Yes.

A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition analyzing 343 studies that compare the nutritional value of organic to conventional produce delivers a pretty convincing verdict: organic produce IS better than food grown with pesticides.

The authors of the study found statistically significant differences between organic and non-organic crops, particularly in antioxidant values. Antioxidants are nutrients that destroy cell-damaging free radicals linked with aging and disease. In addition to higher levels of vitamins and minerals, certain other nutrients such as phenolic acids, flavanones, flavonols, and anthocyanins were 19%, 69%, 50%, and 51% higher in organic produce, respectively.

These compounds have been linked to a reduced risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases and some forms of cancer.

Not only are organic fruits and vegetables more nutritious than conventional produce, researchers found significantly lower levels of the highly-toxic heavy metal cadmium and pesticide residues. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, in animals, chronic ingestion of cadmium causes increased blood pressure, reduced blood flow to the limbs, and especially kidney disease.

According to the CDC’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the kidneys are the primary organs targeted by chronic exposure to cadmium. Human studies show that there is a latency period of approximately 10 years after cadmium exposure before the onset of kidney damage, depending on intensity of exposure. Cadmium accumulates in the bones and reduces calcium absorption thereby affecting bone density.

While organic produce can be more expensive than conventional produce, you can save money by growing your own. You can also prioritize produce on the EWG’s “dirty dozen” list to reduce pesticide consumption.

In the television commercials, men with salt-and-pepper hair drive speedboats and make bedroom eyes at their ladies while a narrator asks, “Do you have a decreased sex drive? Lack of energy? Moodiness? The problem may be low testosterone.”

These direct-to-consumer ads are a drug-industry triumph. Since 2000, the number of American men using supplemental testosterone products, such as AndroGel, Axiron, and Fortesta, has nearly quadrupled.

Testosterone (“T” for short) is now a $2.4 billion industry. The explosive growth is due, in part, to easier delivery options, such as gels and roll-ons, as well as treatment centers that supply injections.

But there’s more to this story. “If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” warns Bradley Anawalt, MD, an endocrinologist and chief of medicine at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.

He heads the Hormone Health Network, the public-education arm of the Endocrine Society, which releases clinical guidelines for testosterone therapy.

“These commercials try to convince men that there is something wrong with them,” Anawalt says. “But men need to remember that drug companies are there to make a profit.”

Recent research into the safety of testosterone therapy has yielded mixed results. One study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, showed no adverse effects. Other studies, however, have shown an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The findings prompted the FDA to start investigating the safety of testosterone products. (The FDA findings are forthcoming.)

Male testosterone levels drop 1 to 2 percent annually after age 30 as part of andropause, or male menopause. But recent studies have found that the decrease is often more the result of lifestyle factors than it is the natural consequence of aging.

A common risk factor for low testosterone is being overweight. And nearly 70 percent of American men are overweight or obese.

For every one-point increase in body mass index, or BMI, it turns out, a man’s testosterone decreases by 2 percent. That’s bad because testosterone calibrates libido, bone density, muscle mass, strength, motivation, memory, and fat burning.

The good news, says fitness expert Adam Bornstein, coauthor of Man 2.0: Engineering the Alpha, is that testosterone is quite sensitive to lifestyle changes, and men rarely need a prescription to boost their T levels. Using lifestyle fixes instead of supplemental T, Bornstein says, is like fixing up a broken engine versus simply putting different fuel in it.

Anawalt, who routinely sees men in his practice lose a few pounds, feel better, and increase their testosterone naturally, agrees.

“More often than not,” he says, “healthy living is the solution.”

Weight loss is a good place to start, but it’s not the only avenue to upping your testosterone. Read on to find out how to harness your body’s power to make more T.

10 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR TESTOSTERONE

1. Lose the Visceral Fat

The science is clear: Men’s body fat drains testosterone. We’re not talking pinchable back fat or squishable love handles. We’re talking classic belly fat. In medical parlance, it’s called visceral fat. Unlike fat that lies just beneath the surface of the skin, visceral fat nestles deep in the abdomen around the organs. It’s tenacious, dangerous, and hormonally active. The more visceral fat a man has, the higher his risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, insulin resistance, and colon cancer.

Visceral fat, which is often driven by consumption of flour, sugar, and the high-glycemic processed foods that contain them, depletes testosterone. Visceral fat makes aromatase, an enzyme that turns testosterone into estrogen. “Men don’t realize their belly fat can steal their masculinity,” says John La Puma, MD, author of Refuel.

“I talk to men about how they need to lower their cholesterol and reduce their blood pressure,” he says. “But I don’t get their full attention until I tell them that if they don’t let me help them address their belly fat, their testicles will shrink, they’ll lose their erections, and their libido will disappear.”

If you’re wondering if your weight could be affecting your manhood, wrap a tape measure around your abdomen under your shirt, right at your belly button. Check the number. Ideally, your waist size is half your height. If your waist is more than 40 inches, says La Puma, “your belly could be turning you into a girl.”

2. Up Your Vitamin D

Deficient vitamin D levels often go hand in hand with low testosterone. Get 15 minutes of sun three times a week to stabilize your vitamin D. If you can’t get enough sun, many experts suggest taking at least 1,000 to 2,000 international units (IU) of supplemental vitamin D daily. For best results, take vitamin D3, which is more active than D2.

Remember, megadoses of vitamin D can cause toxicity, so don’t get carried away. It’s always a good idea to know your current vitamin D levels, so ask your doctor for a 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test.

3. Eat More Zinc

Our bodies need zinc to make testosterone. Zinc also blocks the action of aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. Oysters offer the highest amount of zinc per serving of any food. Just six oysters contain about 500 percent of the mineral’s recommended daily allowance (RDA). Other zinc-rich foods include lean meats and spinach.

4. Crunch on Cruciferous Vegetables

Cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, watercress, and cauliflower are rich sources of glucobrassicin, which breaks down into a substance that lowers levels of visceral fat and suppresses estrogen in men.

5. Choose Healthy Fats and Proteins

Cholesterol is the building block of testosterone, and eating healthy fats, including saturated fats, helps your body make “good” cholesterol while also supporting healthy hormone balance. Give your body a dose of healthy fats and proteins by consuming moderate amounts of meats from hormone-free animals, grassfed cattle, and wild-caught fish. Nosh on healthy-fat sources such as olives, nuts, seeds, avocados, and coconut oil.

6. Consume Hot Chilies

Not only do spicy chilies and hot-chili powder help the body burn fat, they also contain high levels of antioxidants, which can cool inflammation.

Inflammation sets the stage for belly fat and insulin resistance, which precedes type 2 diabetes. Other anti-inflammatory spices include turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and oregano.

7. Do High-Intensity Interval Training

Short bursts of timed intense activity — known as high-intensity interval training or HIIT — trigger the body to make more testosterone than less-than-intense aerobic or endurance exercise, says La Puma. Spurts of activity stimulate androgen-sensitive tissue, he explains, which tells the body to make more testosterone. Strength training has also been shown to increase testosterone.

8. Get Better, Longer Sleep

Our bodies make testosterone while we sleep. In one study, men who got five hours of sleep a night had testosterone levels 10 to 15 percent lower than when they got a solid eight hours. The study, conducted by the University of Chicago, found that skimping on sleep reduced the men’s T levels by an amount equivalent to aging 10 or more years. While it can be challenging to change your sleep habits, says Natasha Turner, ND, you can “start going to bed 15 minutes earlier each week until you reach your target time.”

9. Stop Using Screens at Night

Backlit computer screens use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that contain short-wavelength blue light. This light significantly suppresses the pineal gland’s release of melatonin, an essential ingredient for restful sleep, and thus, for testosterone. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops are all offenders, so turn them off as close to dusk as possible.

10. Clean Up Your Personal-Care Products

Most men probably don’t give a lot of thought to the chemicals in their soap, shampoo, and deodorant, but many personal-care products are rife with chemicals that interfere with hormone balance, including testosterone.

Check the Environmental Working Group’s searchable database atwww.ewg.org/skindeep to find out whether your products are safe. The database rates personal-care products, including those specifically for men, with scores for overall hazard, cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and
allergies and immunotoxicity.

While many men experience the negative effects of too little testosterone, women tend to suffer from a surplus of the stuff.

Contrary to popular belief, women do make — and need — testosterone. A part of the androgen family of hormones, testosterone does many of the same things for women that it does for men: builds muscle and bone strength, aids immune function, and stokes the libido.

The difference boils down to quantity. On any average day, a woman makes about 250 micrograms of testosterone, while a man typically makes 10 to 20 times that.

Although they produce far less of it, “women’s bodies are exquisitely sensitive to testosterone, especially when it comes to emotional well-being and assertiveness,” says Sara Gottfried, MD, author of The Hormone Cure. “Androgens are the biochemical underpinnings of dominance and desire.” (For more from Sara Gottfried, see “Stress Buster“.)

Unlike men, who are apt to feel the effects of low testosterone, women tend to suffer from high testosterone (though they, too, can have low testosterone levels). “Excess androgens — including testosterone — is one of the top hormonal imbalances I see in my practice,” says Gottfried.

In women, signs of too much testosterone include acne, excess pubic and facial hair, and a deepening voice. (Too little may manifest itself as a lack of confidence and libido.)

Women in menopause can have high testosterone levels, says Erin Lommen, ND, a naturopath in Portland, Ore. During menopause, especially early in the process, testosterone often remains steady while estrogen and progesterone plunge due to the stopping of ovarian production, she explains.

Young women also struggle with high testosterone. “What we’ve come to understand in the last 10 years is that younger women may be making too much testosterone in response to blood-sugar imbalances,” says Lommen.

It’s easy to forget that insulin is also a member of the hormonal milieu, and if insulin goes awry, so does everything else. During insulin resistance, the body’s cells ignore insulin’s call to mop up sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream. This stimulates the ovaries to make more testosterone.

That excess insulin also makes the liver produce less sex-hormone-binding globulin, the key protein that binds testosterone and keeps it from causing trouble, says Gottfried.

Approximately 82 percent of women with excess androgens also have polycystic ovary syndrome, the No. 1 cause of infertility. “The good news is that this type of infertility is easily reversible once we get the hormones balanced,” Gottfried says.

If you struggle with high testosterone, you have more control than you think. Here are a few places to start.

  • Maintain a healthy weight. In this sense, men and women are alike: Losing excess weight is a great way to balance testosterone levels. Even a 5 percent weight reduction can normalize hormone levels for women, says Gottfried.
  • Cut flour, sugar, and all refined carbs. One study showed that women can reduce androgenic hormones (including testosterone) by up to 20 percent by eating a diet low in refined carbs and rich in low-glycemic foods, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and phytoestrogens. Cut sugar, too: “Sugar is a big factor in excess androgens,” Gottfried says.
  • Add fiber. If testosterone hangs around too long in the gut, the body picks it back up and returns it into circulation, which adds to overall levels. The solution? Eat more fiber. Testosterone clings to fiber like cat hair on a sweater: The more fiber you eat, the more testosterone you excrete.
  • Avoid dairy. All dairy is laden with hormones. Even milk from the happiest, most chemical-free cows on the planet is hormone-rich because lactating cows are producing milk for their calves to help them grow. These natural bovine hormones are capable of disrupting our bodies’ natural balance.

Another strike against dairy is that milk and cheese can drive up inflammation, which leads to higher androgens, says Gottfried. She suggests cutting out dairy for six weeks to see if symptoms related to high testosterone improve.

Cashews to Beat the Blues

What makes cashews so powerful? Tryptophan. That’s right; tryptophan isn’t just in your holiday turkey. One serving of cashews contains 28% of our RDA of the essential amino acid. Tryptophan is actually a precursor to serotonin. When serotonin levels are low, anxiety and depression can set in. The body uses tryptophan to produce serotonin in the brain, so 1/4 to 1/2 cup of cashews can actually help your body boost its stores. In fact, about 1/2 cup of cashews contains around 500 mg of tryptophan, which is justified as a therapeutic amount for mood elevation. Just don’t start eating 1/2 cup of cashews every day as, although they are healthy, they are nutritionally dense in calories.

But tryptophan alone is not what makes cashews such a powerful antidepressant food. Cashews are also high in magnesium and B6. Our modern diets are often deficient in magnesium, due to stress and poor eating habits. Incidentally, magnesium has been shown to prevent and rapidly treat depression in many patients, so it is an incredibly important mineral for mood balance. B6, on the other hand, is also extremely important, as it is the vitamin responsible for tryptophan’s conversion into serotonin. It also enhances magnesium’s absorption by the body. In fact, tryptophan, B6, and magnesium work together as a trifecta of mood-boosters, and cashews are a great source of all of ‘em.

Cashews aren’t a miracle food, however. It is still important to reduce stress, get moderate exercise, and consume a healthy diet to get the one-up on depression. Stress may be the most significant factor, as cortisol can prevent tryptophan from being converted in the body. So, be sure to practice meditation, yoga, or positive self talk with those cashews, and be sure to always consult a trusted doctor for anything occurring chronically.

What’s often overlooked, however, is that nutrition and depression are inextricably linked. If you are feeling blue, it may be a good idea to get tested for dietary deficiencies before popping pills. Other great foods loaded with tryptophan, if you are adverse to cashews, are pumpkin seeds and beans. But, with B6, magnesium, and tryptophan, cashews are veritable depression busters. Keeping some on hand in your freezer for a quick and delicious boost or to combat the winter doldrums is an excellent idea.

A Handful of Walnuts May Keep Alzheimer’s Away

Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s.

Due to huge number of people suffering from this condition, there is extensive research to find possible cures or means of prevention.

Recent Study Gives Hope:

The New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities led by Dr. Abha Chauhan used mice vulnerable to developing Alzheimer’s disease in their study.  They fed them a mixed diet which contained 6 percent or 9 percent walnuts.  When they tested their learning ability, memory, and motor development, it was found that the control group mice performed much worse than the walnut consuming group.  It was also noted that there was a reduction in anxiety and improvement in motor skills in the walnut eaters.

Dr. Chauhan said these findings lead the way in advanced human studies on walnuts and Alzheimer’s disease.

How Is This Powerful Effect Possible?
Walnuts are the second highest food in antioxidants and very rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers speculate that this may be the how they protect the brain from degeneration.

Do we need to be concerned about Alzheimer’s?

Yes. Here are a few facts for you to ponder from the Alzheimer’s Association:

More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease.

  • Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States
  • 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
  • Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
  • A woman in her 60’s has an estimated lifetime risk for developing Alzheimer’s is 1 in 6. For breast cancer it is 1 in 11.

Previous Studies indicate that Walnuts Help with Brain Function.

  • Walnuts may help your memory was the conclusion of a report published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012.
  • Diet of walnuts and blueberries may help maintain brain function. It was found that shorter chain fatty acids found in plants, such as walnuts, may have beneficial effects on brain function.
  • Increase your brain size with walnuts. Study found that those with a low level of omega 3 had smaller brain volumes than those with higher levels.

Walnuts: The Crinkly Powerfood are full of health benefits beyond brain health:

  • Researchers at Marshall University found that a daily dose of walnuts (equal to 2 ounces a day in humans) reduces the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice.
  • Similar finding in mice for prostate cancer was found at the UC Davis Cancer Center.
  • Walnuts have been found to be more effective than olive oil in countering the ill effects of high-fat foods (Barcelona, 2006).
  • Walnuts may lower cholesterol and decrease heart disease.  The high alpha-linolenic acid content helps maintain the elasticity of the arteries, which aids circulation. Cholesterol is linked to the two leading causes of death in the world.

Include some walnuts into your daily diet.

  • Add them to your morning porridge.
  • To your salad.
  • Or just eat a few as a snack.
