15 Habits of Highly Confident People

 
No one is confident all the time but some people seem to exude confidence leaving others wondering “what’s the secret?”  Here are some of my observations about the habits of highly confident people.

1.  They have a strong sense of self. They know what they like and what they don’t like.  They’ve most likely built a strong sense of self by having a wide variety of experiences.

2.  They have a strong sense of personal boundaries. They don’t try to please others merely for the sake of making others happy. But, that doesn’t mean they are contrarian to boost their ego either.

3.  They learn from their past without dwelling on it. The past can play a role in helping us move forward in life, but not if we get stuck in it.

4.  They go after their goals and dreams. They may feel fear but they strive to reach their dreams anyway.

5.  They recognize mistakes are learning opportunities. They don’t beat themselves up for their mistakes, realizing that every mistake is an opportunity to learn likes, dislikes, and ways to be more successful next time.

6.  They try new things. There is an expression that experience is the best teacher.  Trying new things allows us to evolve as people.

7.  They take risks. They make informed choices even if there is risk involved.  They know the difference between a gamble and a risk.  They prepare as much as they can and then dive in for those risks they feel are worth the effort.

8.  They refuse to be victimized. One thing I learned from being a health practitioner is that everyone has had difficulties and challenges.  The highly confident person refuses to let the difficulties make them feel victimized.  Of course, we all feel sorry for ourselves sometimes but it is important not to linger in self-pity.

9.  They celebrate their successes and the successes of others. You won’t find truly confident people who are jealous and diminishing of other people’s successes.  They celebrate them.

10.  They can be alone with their own thoughts without needing to fill every minute with conversation, technologies (cellphones, e-mail, texting, etc.), pastimes, or television.

11. They trust their instincts. Instincts help guide us on our path to make the best choices for us.  Trusting these instincts helps us make better choices.

12.  They accept change. Someone once said that “change is the only constant.”  While highly confident people may not always like the changes occurring they accept them and do their best to ride the wave of change.

13.  They take care of themselves. They know that the expression GIGO (Garbage in, Garbage out) is true of the body.  They treat their body with respect by giving it high quality nourishment in the form of healthy food, fresh air, relaxation, and activity.

14.  They boost others, not demean them. Confidence and ego-tripping aren’t the same things.  Confident people don’t feel the need to put others down to build themselves up.

15.  They dont beat themselves up. Of course, no one is perfect.  Even the most confident of people have weak moments.  They dust themselves off and keep going.

Study: Happiness IS Contagious

 

It looks like Bobby McFerrin was right when he sang, “don’t worry be happy.” According to a study published in Statistics in Medicine and conducted at Harvard  University and the University of California, happiness is contagious.

That’s good news for friends, neighbors, and spouses of happy people.   The study found that when a person becomes happy, a friend who lives  close to the happy person has a 25 percent higher likelihood of becoming happy  too. The spouse of the happy person has an 8 percent increased chance  of happiness, and the next-door neighbors have a 34 percent  chance. But there’s more.

The researchers conducted a review of other studies, including the ongoing  Framingham Heart Study and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.  Upon analysis the scientists not only found that certain relationships are most  impacted by happiness, they propose a theory called the “social contagion  theory” of ”three degrees of influence“ This is where  the study results get exciting. Lead researcher and professor at Harvard Medical  School, Nicholas Christakis, says that “Everyday interactions we  have with other people are definitely contagious, in terms of happiness.” While  that may seem obvious, he adds that the effect goes well beyond the  people with whom we have direct contact. When one person  becomes happy, the effect can spread by three degrees, which includes friends of  friends.

The researchers assessed people’s responses to survey questions,  including:  “How often during the past week would you say:  ‘I enjoyed  life? I felt hopeful about the future?’”

Of course, happiness may come in waves and, as a result, there are challenges  linked to studying happiness. But, when you consider the belief that there are  only 6 degrees of separation linking people, and that we can influence 3 degrees  of those people, it is quite a remarkable notion that if we make an effort to be truly happy (no, not the fake stuff!) then we can have a profound effect on  those around us.

10 Ways to Increase Your Odds of Surviving a Plane Crash

 

Plane crashes seem rare these days, but as last week’s vivid incident on the  San Francisco runway reminds us, they still do happen and the results can be  fatal. Since I am in the Florida Keys with my daughter and we are flying across  the country in a few days, the San Francisco accident admittedly gave me a  scare.  Fortunately, I came across an interview with Ben Sherwood, the  author of The Survivor’s Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your  Life, which included smart tips for increasing your odds that you will  survive a plane crash – if you happen to be so unlucky as to be in one. As it is  the summer travel season, I thought I would share Mr. Sherwood’s and other  experts’ potentially life-saving tips with you:

1. Maybe the most important tip: Sit as close to an exit as possible. A study  by University of Greenwich’s Ed Galea, an expert on how people react and  survive in emergency situations, examined the seating charts of over 100 plane  crashes and discovered that those within 5 rows of the emergency exits had much  better odds of survival than those farther away from exit doors. Aisle  seats are also statistically safer than other seats as it allows you to exit the  plane faster than people in middle and window seats.

2. Galea also found that seats at the back of the plane were safer  statistically than those in the front (sorry, First Class). Passengers in  the tail  of the airplane enjoy a 40% higher survival rate than those in the first few  rows.

3. Always keep your seatbelt snugly buckled when sitting in your seat. “Snug” is the operative word here: Every centimeter of slack in your  belt triples the G-Force your body will experience in the crash.  Also, keep your belt low on your pelvis, rather than your abdomen, as your bones  can handle impact better than your soft internal organs.

4. Pay attention to “Plus Three / Minus Eight.” This is aviation lingo  referring to the first three minutes of being airborne and the last eight. Why  is this time frame important? Eighty percent of all crashes happen in this  eleven-minute window. Rather than take off your shoes, snooze or pick-up a  magazine, pay close attention during take-off and landings for any signs that  something may be amiss.

5. On average you have 90 seconds to exit a burning plane before the aluminum  hull of the aircraft is no longer protective. Leave luggage, purses and laptops  behind. Also, remove high-heeled shoes. Smoke is one of the biggest threats to  plane crash survivors, so if possible, place a cloth over your nose and mouth as  a rudimentary filter.  Again, if possible, for added protection make the  cloth wet before using.

6. Sherwood emphasizes that how you react to an emergency situation and  how prepared you are has significant bearing as to whether you will survive it  or not. Easier said than done, but do not panic. Panic, says Sherwood, is the  enemy of survival. Being prepared helps prevent panic. When boarding a plane  memorize where you are vis-a-vis the emergency exits. Formulate and VISUALIZE  your exit plan – for example what if the closest exit is not available, where is  the second closest exit? The third? Imagine yourself getting to the closest exit  and out to safety.  ”You are responsible for your life,” Galea warns, “If  you know what you’re doing, you’ve got a better chance of surviving.”

7. In most extreme emergencies, about 90 percent of people either panic or  freeze, while only 10 percent keep absolutely calm, are able to think clearly  and instruct others on how to save themselves. If you happen to be a  deer-in-the-headlights person or one who is prone to hysteria and you come in  contact with an Indiana Jones-type (i.e. calm, cool and collected), do your best  to follow his/her instructions.

8. Statistically people who are in better shape are more agile, more alert  and better able to escape. Also, being thin increases your survival chances in a  plane crash as you may be required to squeeze through tight spaces to safety.  While you are not likely to suddenly get in shape or become thinner for an  upcoming flight, you can choose to be as alert as possible. Do not drink alcohol  or take sleeping pills that will impair your ability to respond quickly in an  emergency, especially in those crucial minutes before take-off and landing.

9. Listen to those safety instructions before take-off, even if you have  heard the drill a hundred times. Have your children listen as well. Look at the  emergency card and consider the different impact positions that can be assumed  during a crash. A child has a different impact position than an adult. Bracing  upon impact makes a difference on survival rates. This was well demonstrated by  Discovery TV that crash tested a Boeing 727 in Sonoran Desert. They had the  Boeing 727 equipped with crash test dummies, dozens of cameras, sensors and a  crew of daring pilots, who parachuted from the plane minutes before the jetliner  careened into the ground.

10. Be positive – while accepting the worse case scenario. While you may feel  a sense of hopelessness in the advent of an impending crash or immediately  following a crash, remember that the survival rate of plane crashes is 95.7  percent! That is an incredibly high rate of survival for something as dramatic  as a plane crash.

After sharing his plane crash survival tips, Sherwood likes to reassure his  audience that actual crashes are highly unlikely and the odds are that you  will survive.  ”You could fly every day for the next 164,000 years and not  have an airplane crash,” he said. I don’t know about you, but I find that last  statistic the most comforting.  But in the advent of a crash, thanks to Mr.  Sherwood and others, I also feel more empowered that I can survive.

Is Your Happiness Conditional?

 

Did you know that the first day of Spring 2013 was also The first World  International  Happiness Day, declared by the UN to signal the  importance of going beyond  Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of  progress. The UN is taking a stand  on happiness! They are saying that we need a better measures of society’s real   wellbeing — including happiness. Right on, UN!

Consider  this outcome of the Gallup  Millennium World Survey: They polled almost  60,000 people in 60 countries,  Gallup ranked ten things that  people said were the most important to their  ability to experience happiness. At the top were health, a happy family life and  a job (a  life’s purpose) while “Standard of Living” (how rich you are compared  to  other people) was one of the least important.

So  this is what I know about happiness.  If you want to be happy you need  to be intentional about it. How are you  creating happiness in your life?  Happiness comes from our own actions. We  actually have to create it, and it can’t be conditional.

Tips on Intentional Happiness:

Is  there something that always bothers  you? Can you put it down for a  while, and take a break from it? Can you be  happy for the joy in  memories and not be sad that they are over, but happy that  whatever it  is, actually happened?

Can you spend so much time working on  your own crap, that you have little time to be critical and mean about others?

Can  you put resources towards your own  happiness creation project? That  means money, time and effort. That means  putting the pleasure in your  own hands, and not waiting for someone else to  give you permission to do  it. Can you stop being sensible about your happiness,  and stop having  to justify it behind disease and wellness? It’s true that  happiness  makes us healthier, but what if we can give ourselves happiness and  good  health is just a side effect?

Do you make happiness conditional?

One of my biggest learnings around happiness happened in the middle of my infertility   experience.

Every month, my happiness became conditional on whether or  not I was  pregnant. I was like those women who live and die by the  scale. If they lose  weight, it’s a good day. If they don’t, they sink  into a deep depression. That  was me and pregnancy.  All month long I  lived on this conditional  possibility of my own happiness. My happiness  could only look one way, and that  was not getting my period. That was a  rough way to live.

Then  in the middle of my great unhappiness came this next revelation: could  I  only be happy if everything always continued to look the way I expected  it  to look? Was there absolutely no room at all in my life for other  kinds of  happiness? Could I never enjoy other peoples’ children or go to  a movie without  thinking about pregnancy? Was there no possibility for  happiness in anything  other than a pregnancy?

I realized that I was living in the land of constant expectation. And  that  expectation set me up for pain, over and over again. It was a  pretty miserable  way to live.

I began to wonder if there were other ways to find this happiness and pleasure that I wanted in my life in between waiting for pregnancy to happen.

This is what I have found: conditional happiness was not a path to  pleasure  and well-being. I shifted my view because I started to realize  that I was  missing out on a lot of love, pleasure and joy with my  current perspective. I  was wasting a lot of really good living in my  very narrow view of what would  make me truly happy.

Often my thoughts would go to what I thought I truly wanted first,  and then  I would have to settle into what was in front of me. With some  practice the  process of being happy with my second pick was getting more  delicious with each  round.

It helped open a path filled with unexpected pleasures that I almost  stomped  away from in my anger over infertility. Silly me. Instead, I  started to be  filled with a new kind of peacefulness that I highly  recommend.  Sure, I  still wanted my babies. And they did come. The good  news is that when they  finally arrived, they came home to a woman that  was more able to receive love  than ever before.

So, when it comes to happiness think about how you look at it.   Are you  intentionally creating happiness in your life? Look at the ways you make your  happiness conditional on certain life events.  Happiness is worth  understanding and creating for yourself and the world around you.

Did you know that if you use the typical department or drug store brands of  cosmetics daily, you could be absorbing nearly 5 pounds of chemicals into your body annually?

Many of these widely distributed products that are highly advertised and  hyped, including some of the ones your dermatologist sells, have been linked to  deadly inflammatory conditions and even cancers.

You might want to check your personal care product labels and see if they include any of  the following: Mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), petrolatum,  propylene glycol, gycerin, collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, alpha hydroxy  acids (AHA’s), bentonite, fragrances, kaolin, lanolin, lauramide DEA, sodium  chloride, or benzophenone. These are the culprits we don’t want to put  on our skin, which is the largest organ in our bodies.

Some of these ingredients are even advertising buzz words that we have become  accustomed to believe that they are actually good to have in our products, but  nothing could be further from the truth.

To the get the “skinny” on each of these ingredients and why you don’t want  to put them on your skin, please peruse, “The Truth About Cosmetics,” as we are going to learn how to  avoid all of them by making some or all of our own personal care and beauty  products both safely and cost effectively. I will share a few here but there is  a wealth to be mined online and you can experiment yourself with these recipes  and find many good ones.

Making our products ourselves is the very best way to be sure that we’re not  ingesting or applying these and many more dangerous chemicals topically. In the  spirit of DIY why not simply take matters in our own hands and make our own  meals at home as much as possible and make our own beauty and personal care  products, too? I think you will find that this can be both fun and easy to do  when using your own organic and natural ingredients. You might even find that  you may already have beauty-fuel ingredients right in your own kitchen that can  be the base of many homemade personal care products.

I suggest to my clients that the most important natural food and ingredient  to have on hand to use as a base for our homemade personal care products is  organic, expeller pressed, unrefined, virgin, coconut oil.

The Coconut and Its Beauty-Fuel Oil

The scientific name for the coconut is cocos nucifera. Spanish  explorers called it “coco,” which was said to mean “monkey face” because the  three holes on its surface, especially the pair of eyes on the hairy nut’s  surface resembles the face and the head of a monkey. Nucifera means “nut-bearing.”

Coconuts have been found to be extremely nutritious. They provide coconut  meat (which we usually purchase as flakes), juice, milk, and oil which has fed,  nourished and soothed populations, externally and internally around the world  for hundreds of years. Many island nations use the coconut as a staple food in  their diet because it provides the majority of the food the people eat. The idea  I present here is to use it both internally and externally!

Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

1 cup organic coconut sugar 1/3 cup fine ground Himalayan Chrystal or pink  salt 1/2 cup cold or expeller pressed, virgin, organic, coconut oil 2-3  tablespoons almond oil 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil 1 or 2 drops of lavender essential oil (or you can use rose essential oil)

Since you might have a nice jar with lid on hand which you may have saved  from the recycling bin you can start with your own recycled jar, or buy a “Ball  Jar,”  add the Himalayan Chrystal or pink salt, coconut oil and then add the  rest of the ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon. (I like to keep a small  wooden spoon in my shower or next to the tub to stir the scrub and spoon it into  my hand for easier application.)

For an all-natural moisturizer after bath or shower, pure coconut oil  is my favorite. It’s a beauty-fuel moisturizer and a potent source of  the beneficial fat lauric acid. I put a tablespoon in my herbal tea and sip this  before, during or after my bath or shower. Your thyroid gland loves coconut oil  as it helps to nourish it. One of the symptoms of hypothryroidism is dry skin so  we get double the benefits when we use coconut oil internally and externally as  often as possible.

How Else Can We Use Coconut Oil?

If you are using coconut oil for topical purposes, especially skin, scalp and  hair care, just melt the oil (if it is in its solid state) by keeping the bottle  in the sun or warming it in warm water. Coconut oil melts in hot weather and  congeals in cold weather and this is normal for coconut oil. You can also take  some coconut oil out and put it in a small bowl and heat the bowl over a flame  (do not use microwave). Then take the oil on your palm and apply it to your  skin, or scalp and hair.

Body Lotion: After a bath or shower, just massage coconut  oil all over your body— it feels and smells amazing. You can remove any excess  oil with a Turkish towel and rub yourself down briskly.

Facial Moisturizer: Whether your skin is dry or oily or even  if you struggle with acne, coconut oil turns out to be antimicrobial,  antifungal, and antibacterial, which explains why it heals skin conditions so  well.

Eye Makeup Remover: Just melt a little coconut oil in the  palm of your hand and apply it to a cotton ball and remove your eye makeup  gently, as you would with a store bought product. Don’t get any oil into your  eyes, please.

Hair Conditioner and De-Tangler: Coconut oil is great for  all hair types, thin, thick, straight or curly—coconut oil helps amazingly and  after blow drying or flat ironing apply a little to your hands and use to  achieve a sheen.

Deep Conditioner for Hair: Perhaps once a month or after  coloring, perming, straightening or other treatment, slather coconut oil on your  scalp and let it soak in for a little while and then shampoo out.

Toothpaste: Baking soda + coconut oil makes a fine  toothpaste.

Coconut Oil Shampoo: It’s not difficult to make your own  shampoo, as follows:

Homemade Coconut Oil Shampoo

Simply mix 1/4 cup coconut milk (I use the Thai canned coconut milk but there  are other options to experiment with or make your own) with 1/3 cup liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s) and combine with 1  tablespoon coconut oil, 1 teaspoon almond oil and 
10 to 20 drops of essential  oil of lavender or rose (stop after 10 drops and see how you like the fragrance  and then add more slowly checking after each addition to customize your  shampoo). Combine all ingredients in a blender or whisk thoroughly and pour into  a recycled shampoo bottle or jar and shake well.  Again you can recycle whatever  you have on hand for this purpose. It’s great to repurpose whenever we can.  Shampoo as you would with any shampoo and rinse well. A rinse of 50 percent  water and 50 percent white vinegar is a nice finish.

Or try a coconut oil hair mask.

Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Simply mix 1 tablespoon organic honey with 
3 tablespoons coconut oil   (optional ingredient) and one raw beaten egg yolk and whisk thoroughly or use  your blender. 
While still in the shower and your hair is still wet but not  dripping, pour the hair mask a little bit at a time onto the ends of your hair,  working your way up to the scalp. As soon as you’ve used all the mask and your  hair is thoroughly coated, wrap it in a damp warm towel or a shower cap and  leave in for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo your hair as usual. For a deeper  conditioning treatment try this:

Deep Coconut Oil Conditioner Recipe

One very ripe mashed fresh avocado 2 tablespoons coconut oil 2  tablespoons purified water 2 tablespoons organic (preferably raw) heavy  cream

Combine all ingredients and using a wide tooth comb, comb it through your  hair and cover with a shower cap or a wrap your head in a warm towel for  about 30 minutes. Allow the Deep Coconut Oil Conditioner to penetrate deep into  your hair and scalp, then rinse the conditioner out with tepid water.   Shampoo with our homemade coconut oil shampoo and rinse.

All of these homemade personal care products will last a bit longer and stay  fresher (up to a week) if you keep them in the fridge!

You can see by these examples that there are many personal care products that  we can make ourselves by utilizing the beauty-fuel coconut and other natural  ingredients. When we cook with and use coconut oil in many of our recipes, we  make full use of the beauty-fuel benefits of the bounty that the coconut and  nature itself offers us. This way we can achieve beauty that is more than skin  deep!

You’ve Come a Long Way, Kombucha

Years ago I was told about a mushroom shaped fungus that people in the health food “know” were calling Kombucha, and using for medicinal purposes. At the time I was working with a pioneering medical doctor who insisted that we find some of this elixir and make it ourselves. Having the right connections brought this slimy little bugger to my kitchen where I placed it in a bowl of water with some sugar and bags of tea and let it do its thing. Not only did it ferment the water, but it grew another baby Kombucha, and therein lies the dilemma of making home brewed Kombucha, what to do with all the babies?

Needless to say, I spread the word to my friends and family, who, by now, knew my unorthodox interest in all things odd and alternative where food and medicine was concerned. At the time there was very little information as to how Kombucha worked, just that it was a great blood detoxifier that had emigrated from Russia and could heal a multitude of ills in a small amount of time. One unproven claim was that this odd looking mass of gelatin could heal cancer, which would only elicit a succession of raised eyebrows and unbelieving groans. Undeterred I continued to soak the Kombucha, drink the elixir, and give away the babies.

Having already spent years dancing around the media hype of the just-blossoming-health-food industry, I knew to take it all with a grain of sea salt and do my own research. Which usually means, to first try it out on myself in order to test the claims. The good doctor happily offered his body for additional research and for several months we soaked and sipped Kombucha until, seeing little or no results, we just could not take another sip of the vinegary solution. Alas, the last remaining baby was laid to rest in the woods and we all returned to drinking elixir from the green tea family.

Now, some 20 years later, and Kombucha appears to be one of the most popular health drinks on the market to the tune of $295 million dollars last year. Naturally, this means that the taste has to have greatly improved with the addition of cranberry, mango, ginger or berry flavors; but what hasn’t changed is that people still claim that they feel much better after drinking the Kombucha elixer. Even with that sharp vinegar taste devoted Kombucha fans find relief from a number of ailments, in particular digestive, intestinal issues.

But I make no claims here, only that if you are a Kombucha drinker you might like to know that you can make that four-something-a-bottle health soda into a delicious summer drink by adding:

  • a few ice cubes, and sparkling mineral water for a Kombucha Spritzer.
  • a few scoops of non-dairy ice cream for a delicious Kombucha Ice Cream Float.
  • 1-2 ounces of botanically infused Gin or requisite Vodka with a splash of flavored Kombucha for a liver bracing Kombucha Martini.

As the Irish are want to say when raising a glass or two, Slainte, “To Your Health!”

12 Inexpensive Ways to Relieve Stress

Despite our best intentions for creating a lifestyle free of stress, we have only succeeded in creating more stress than our mind and bodies can really handle. The good news is there are practical ways to reduce stress in your life without having to spend a whole lot of money. It is important to note that there are both environmental and emotional factors that create stress in your home, workplace and outdoors in a city. You might feel the stress of a difficult job, or the emotional strain of a negative relationship, but toxic chemicals in your cleaning supplies or exposure to electro-magnetic frequency’s from your computer and T.V. may not be so easy to detect. They can, however, cause stress to your immune system and eventually will need to be removed or reduced.

For now let’s take a look at some ideas for dealing with stress on a daily basis. By taking one-step-at-a-time you can at least begin to manage the stress that comes from living in a time that demands our complete attention and much of our precious energy. The goal here is to open up space in your day to recharge and reinvigorate your body-mind for the next go-round of activity.

1. Medical research has shown that lack of sleep can stress the body more than anything else you do. Make sure to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night for best effect.

2. To make sure your body can sleep at night, reduce the amount of stimulating foods, such as sugar, caffeine and alcohol, that you ingest each day. For some people even one cup of java can cause insomnia. Stay away from your computer or smart phone before bedtime as it can interfere with your ability to sleep.

3. Take time each day to stop and do nothing. You can do this at your desk with a few stretches and then sitting, lean your head back on the chair and close your eyes for 2-3 minutes. Or, lay down on the sofa or bed and take a 5-10 minute nap. This is a very easy and effective way to refresh and revive the whole body system.


4. Step away from what you are doing and make a cup of herbal tea, then sit and sip it slowly.

5. Take a 15-30 minute walk outside in nature and focus on your breathing. Stand and take deep breaths of fresh air and long exhales to expel the stale indoor air from your lungs.

6. Take 10 minutes each day to sit in meditation. This can be done anywhere you find yourself. Sit with your back upright, hands resting on your thighs, close your eyes and let your mind quiet and empty. Bring your attention to your breath and let the thoughts pass like clouds moving across a blue sky. This can be a powerful moment for your body-mind to relax and rejuvenate.

7. Plan 1-2 days a week when you will not turn on the computer or watch television. Use the time to hike in nature, read a good book, volunteer to help a friend, clean out your kitchen cabinets and cook yourself a healthy meal.

8. Go on a spending diet and stay away from shopping malls and other crowded venues. Instead, take time to be silent and alone with yourself. This is a wonderful time to think about your life, to set goals, to plan and notice what is and what is not working. This awareness allows you to make changes before situations can get out of hand.

9. Put aside 10-15 dollars a week and indulge your senses with a monthly body massage. This can go a long way towards releasing stress, worry and anxiety in a short period of time.

10. Take a restorative yoga class at your local yoga studio. This special form of yoga utilizes nurturing physical postures to relax, rejuvenate and alleviate the effects of chronic stress in your daily life. Once you know the routine you can practice at home in your personal space.

11. Light some candles in your bathroom, put on some soft music and take a warm bath. Add some muscle relaxing bath salts and a few drops of Lavender oil to calm and relax your mind.

12. As all your worries and fears rise up to engulf you, just remember what is happening in the given moment. Anxiety comes from creating a negative future in your mind, one that has not happened and will probably not happen. It is all a product of your imagination and if you can stay focused on what is happening in the present you can reduce the stress this way of thinking can cause.

Your body’s unique intelligence has a way of telling you when something is wrong and it needs help. Not understanding this language makes it difficult to know when your body is talking to you. In Eastern medicine a doctor will read what is written in your face, tongue, eyes, skin, and pulse. The signs of depletion are all there and may have been for some time.

Visual diagnosis is an ancient tool used by traditional healers to discover the strengths and weaknesses, and health (or lack of health), within the body. Once awareness of what’s happening inside the body becomes evident, it can be used to diagnose an illness or prevent an illness from fully manifesting. Awareness of your body is the key to figuring out the necessary diet and lifestyle adjustments to obtain vibrant health. In Oriental diagnosis each organ is seen in relation to all the others, with energy flowing in one continuous circuit.

This energy, called ki (Japanese), chi (Chinese) or prana (Indian), runs through the body in pathways called meridians that are associated with each organ: liver, gallbladder, heart, small intestine, stomach, spleen/pancreas, lung, large intestine, kidney, and bladder. Your face is the most revealing part of your body and provides insight into the larger internal body systems. According to Oriental diagnosis each area of your face manifests a corresponding organ and how it is functioning in the body. For example:

  • The mouth is the entrance to the digestive tract.
  • The nose is the entrance to the respiratory system.
  • The eyes are connected to the optic nerve, brain and nervous system.
  • The ears are the auditory system.

 
How this looks on your face:

  • Your cheeks represent lungs and their condition.
  • Tip of the nose is heart.
  • Nostrils represent the bronchi of the lungs.
  • Middle part of the nose is stomach.
  • Upper part of the nose is pancreas.
  • Under the eyes reflect your kidneys.
  • Between the eyebrows shows liver condition.
  • The temples reflect your spleen.
  • Your forehead represents small intestines.
  • Peripheral forehead the large intestine.
  • Upper forehead shows the bladder.
  • Ears can reflect kidney function.
  • Your mouth reflects the condition of your entire digestive tract.
  • Around the mouth indicates the condition of your sexual organs.

You can easily apply these guidelines to your personal health:

  • Women tend to break out under their lower lip when approaching their monthly menstruation or with hormone fluctuations.
  • Gum and tooth infections are related to the condition of the intestines and much of this can be resolved by improving your diet and allowing the organs to detoxify naturally.
  • Someone with a large bulbous nose shows a heart straining against clogged arteries.
  • Swollen under-eyes reflect kidneys unable to work properly, and a retention of fluid from eating too much salt and fatty foods.
  • The classic lines between the eyebrows shows your liver working hard to keep up with your lifestyle.
  • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes can indicate liver jaundice.

Basically, the condition of your health is all right there, each morning, in front of your eyes. Your face never lies. It shows us when energy becomes blocked in any part of the body, it affects us both internally and externally. According to visual diagnosis every blemish, mole, and discoloration has a deeper meaning. Pay attention, watch and listen to your body and it will let you know when your health condition changes from day to day.
