The Spice that Could Help Boost Memory in Just One Hour

While conducting the research for my upcoming book 60 Seconds to Boost Your Brain Power (Rodale, 2015), I came across an exciting study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study explored the effects of one of turmeric’s active ingredients known as curcumin on sixty healthy adults aged sixty to eighty-five to determine whether the spice has any short- or long-term memory or cognitive effects.

Conducted at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, researches assessed the mental effects of curcumin supplementation after one hour, three hours, and four weeks. They conducted multiple tests to determine whether the participants had any mood, cognitive, or blood marker effects that might indicate curcumin’s immediate or long-term effects. In just one hour after taking the supplement the participants showed significant performance improvement on memory and attention tasks compared to the placebo group.

The participants had many impressive results after four weeks of treatment with curcumin as well. The scientists indicated that working memory, energy levels, calmness and contentedness (as measures of mood), and even fatigue induced by psychological stress were significantly improved following the long-term treatment with the supplement. Participants also had lower cholesterol levels after taking the curcumin supplement.

Even Alzheimer’s patients with severe symptoms, including dementia, irritability, agitation, anxiety, and apathy, showed excellent therapeutic results when taking curcumin in a study published in the Japanese medical journal Ayu. When participants took 764 mg of turmeric with a standardized amount of 100 mg/day of curcumin for twelve weeks, they “started recovering from these symptoms without any adverse reaction in the clinical symptom and laboratory data.” After three months of treatment the patients’ symptoms and their reliance on caregivers significantly decreased. After one year of treatment two of the patients recognized their family members when they were unable to do so at the outset of the study. In one of the cases the person had a 17 percent improvement on their Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score.

The study results were achieved using a brand of curcumin called Longvida; however there are many other excellent brands. Ideally choose a standardized extract of curcumin. Follow package directions. Consult your physician prior to taking curcumin. In my upcoming book 60 Seconds to Boost Your Brain Power (Rodale, 2015), I recommend 400 mg of curcumin three times daily for people suffering from brain disorders, working with a physician.

13 Amazing Benefits of Walking

Walking reverses damage from prolonged sitting.
If you go from sitting at your desk at work to sitting on your couch at home, a short walk could mean some big health benefits. A Indiana University study found that the muscle activity and blood flow from even three five-minute walks a day could reverse the damage caused to leg arteries from three hours of sitting. The lesson? If you’re sitting all day during work, take frequent breaks (at least once an hour) for a short stroll around the building.

Walking improves creativity.
Waiting for inspiration to hit? Take a walk—Stanford researchers found that walking increases creativity levels during the walk and shortly after, producing twice as many creative responses as when you’re sitting. You get the benefits whether you’re walking outside or inside, so if it’s too chilly for a stroll, hit the treadmill or an indoor track.

Walking lowers stress.
A University of Michigan study found that group nature walks lower stress, particularly in people who dealt with an emotionally traumatic event. Research at Heriot-Watt University even found that the brain enters a meditative state when going through green spaces—all the more reason to take a walk through the park after brunch with friends.

Walking lowers blood pressure.
Just 30 minutes of brisk walking lowers blood pressure—and that holds true whether you walk for 30 minutes at a time or break it up into 10 three-minute walks, a totally do-able goal even for those of us stuck sitting in an office all day.

Walking energizes you.
If you regularly experience fatigue, don’t shy away from lacing up—low intensity exercise won’t wipe you out, says a study from the University of Georgia. In fact, it can increase your energy level by 20 percent and decrease fatigue by 65 percent.

Walking cheers you up when it’s part (or all) of your commute.
One study found that the longer people spend commuting via car, the worse their psychological well-being. And just adding 10 minutes of walking to that commute can actually improve well being. “A more active commute to work can be associated with the same psychological benefits as things like a raise in income or starting a new relationship,” study author Adam Martin says.

Walking helps you at work.
A walking work station at the office isn’t in reach for everyone—but if your employer is open to it, the benefits could be huge. Researchers found that people who used walking workstations were less bored and stressed, and more satisfied than those who stood or sat at their desks.

Walking boosts your immune system.
A walk a day keeps the doctor away? Perhaps—a daily 30-45 minute walk at a brisk pace can boost the immune system and keep colds at bay, according to research from Appalachian State University. And not only do regular exercisers get sick less often, their colds are all shorter and less severe.

Walking can reduce risk of impotence in men.
Some time spent in sneakers can lead to a better time between the sheets, according to a nine-year study. Researchers found that a brisk two-mile walk each day can reduce men’s risk of impotence, improving blood flow throughout the body (yep, we mean everywhere).

Walking lowers blood sugar.
A 15-minute walk after each meal reduces your blood sugar for over 24 hours, a study published in Diabetes Care found—a good reason to skip dessert and step outside instead.

Walking keeps older adults sharp.
Living in a walkable neighborhood can be great for older adults, researchers say, resulting in not only physical benefits like lower body mass and blood pressure, but better memory and cognition too.

Walking may lower breast cancer risk.
Spend two and a half hours walking briskly each week and you may cut your risk of breast cancer by 42 percent, a study of over 79,000 women found. According to research in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, exercise alters how the body breaks down the hormone estrogen into either benign or harmful byproducts. It also reduces fatty tissue in women’s bodies, which secretes estrogen.

Walking can ease fibromyalgia pain.
Light exercise like walking—even walking in a pool, for a lower-impact option—has been shown to significantly improve physical function, fatigue, and depression in women with fibromyalgia.

  • I’ve been diagnosed, not defined, see the real me: “I am not a diagnostic or a statistic. I still have feelings, thoughts, dreams, hopes and plans. There are many things I can still do. I am not sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home staring out the window—not yet. I am a vibrant, loving person. Always remember: I have Alzheimer’s, it does not have me.”
  • I can’t do this alone, help me: “I need you to help me find ways to succeed at helping others and in doing something significant with my life. I am very capable of putting thoughts together and expressing them. I sometimes need help understanding things, but that does not mean that I don’t understand. I sometimes need help expressing things, but that doesn’t mean I have no thoughts, and nothing to say. Help me when I need it, and let me do all I can, while I still can.”
  • I am worthy, respect me: “I need to feel that what I say and do matters. I have much yet to offer the world. In many ways, I have more to offer than someone who has not read the final chapter of their life yet. I have lived life, my life, and I am worthy of respect, just as I was before.”

Helping those affected by Alzheimers

The heartbreaking reality is that almost every person reading this post will in some way be affected by Alzheimer’s disease. While nothing can truly prepare you for the emotional, financial and spiritual gauntlet that is dementia, it is possible for each of us to help create a better world for those with the condition.

Ultimately, it’s about making Alzheimer’s awareness an ongoing effort—not just for one month out of the year. And while donating money is a helpful step, perhaps a more profound donation is that of the time necessary to educate ourselves (and others) about the realities of the disease and the challenges faced by those who have it.

As science strives for a medicinal cure, we must do our best to support those for whom such a cure will probably come too late—the five million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, and their families.

Three of these families have shared their story in the online narrative: “Fade to Blank: Life Inside Alzheimer’s” as a way to help others understand the true impact of the disease on the lives of patients and their loved ones. Their raw, unfiltered perspective offers a glimpse into a complex world of love, fear, hope and anguish.

A Handful of Walnuts May Keep Alzheimer’s Away

Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s.

Due to huge number of people suffering from this condition, there is extensive research to find possible cures or means of prevention.

Recent Study Gives Hope:

The New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities led by Dr. Abha Chauhan used mice vulnerable to developing Alzheimer’s disease in their study.  They fed them a mixed diet which contained 6 percent or 9 percent walnuts.  When they tested their learning ability, memory, and motor development, it was found that the control group mice performed much worse than the walnut consuming group.  It was also noted that there was a reduction in anxiety and improvement in motor skills in the walnut eaters.

Dr. Chauhan said these findings lead the way in advanced human studies on walnuts and Alzheimer’s disease.

How Is This Powerful Effect Possible?
Walnuts are the second highest food in antioxidants and very rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers speculate that this may be the how they protect the brain from degeneration.

Do we need to be concerned about Alzheimer’s?

Yes. Here are a few facts for you to ponder from the Alzheimer’s Association:

More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease.

  • Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States
  • 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
  • Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
  • A woman in her 60’s has an estimated lifetime risk for developing Alzheimer’s is 1 in 6. For breast cancer it is 1 in 11.

Previous Studies indicate that Walnuts Help with Brain Function.

  • Walnuts may help your memory was the conclusion of a report published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012.
  • Diet of walnuts and blueberries may help maintain brain function. It was found that shorter chain fatty acids found in plants, such as walnuts, may have beneficial effects on brain function.
  • Increase your brain size with walnuts. Study found that those with a low level of omega 3 had smaller brain volumes than those with higher levels.

Walnuts: The Crinkly Powerfood are full of health benefits beyond brain health:

  • Researchers at Marshall University found that a daily dose of walnuts (equal to 2 ounces a day in humans) reduces the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice.
  • Similar finding in mice for prostate cancer was found at the UC Davis Cancer Center.
  • Walnuts have been found to be more effective than olive oil in countering the ill effects of high-fat foods (Barcelona, 2006).
  • Walnuts may lower cholesterol and decrease heart disease.  The high alpha-linolenic acid content helps maintain the elasticity of the arteries, which aids circulation. Cholesterol is linked to the two leading causes of death in the world.

Include some walnuts into your daily diet.

  • Add them to your morning porridge.
  • To your salad.
  • Or just eat a few as a snack.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea combines some of the best perks of other teas—it’s second only to black tea when it comes to caffeine levels, and second to green tea when it comes to an antioxidant boost. Plus, it may even help boost metabolism and aid in weight loss.

 

Darjeeling Tea

Steep a cup of this tea from India to help prevent ulcers, gastritis, and gastric cancer—research has found that darjeeling inhibits a pathogen carried by more than half the population that leads to those ailments.

 

Black Tea

Four cups of black tea a day was found to reduce stroke risk by 21 percent compared to those who never drank tea, a study of 75,000 men and women found last year. Can’t handle that many cups? Black tea is full of antioxidant compounds that may help ward off Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. And just one or two cups per day has been associated with a 70% lower chance of having or developing type 2 diabetes.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but it won’t be much help if you’re trying to slim down. Recent research reviewed studies on the link between fruit and vegetable consumption and weight gain, concluding that eating more of them won’t take the pounds off—not without an overall reduction in the number of calories consumed.

Before you forsake the farmer’s market though, keep in mind that your favorite fruits and vegetables still have a bevy of amazing health benefits. Here, 6 reasons to load up (and the best fruits and veggies to reach for):

 

 

They can help protect you from allergic reactions.

Make sure you’re eating your applies with the skin on—it contains an antioxidant that has antihistamine properties. One study even found that people who eat five apples a week have better lung function than people who don’t.

 

 

They can lower blood pressure.

Not only can foods rich in potassium lower blood pressure, you can get the benefits without eating bananas all day. In fact, bananas don’t even rank in the top 10 of best sources of potassium—instead, reach for baked sweet potatoes, beet greens, winter squash, prune juice, and carrot juice.

Find them in berries (like acai, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and cranberry), as well as blue corn, eggplant, and red cabbage.

You probably equate vitamin C—a huge immune system booster that also protects against cardiovascular diseases and eye disease—with oranges. But other fruits and vegetables pack an even bigger punch. Opt for guava, sweet red pepper, and kiwis, which have over the daily recommended amount of vitamin C per serving.

 

 

They can reduce your cholesterol and lower your risk of heart disease.

Dietary fiber helps lower your cholesterol and risk of heart disease, in addition to keeping bowels moving and helping you feel full. Tired of beans? Grab fiber-rich veggies and fruits like artichoke, baked sweet potato (with the peel), Asian pears, pumpkin, and spinach.

 

 

They keep bones and teeth healthy.

You don’t need to eat dairy to get your fill of calcium. Other great sources include collard greens, turnip greens, spinach, kale, and okra.

Top 5 Fat-Burning Spices

Losing weight can be a lot easier if you spice up your food.  Add these top five fat-burning spices to your diet to ramp up weight loss:

1. Garlic and 2. Onions;  These yummy foods contain phytochemicals that break down fatty deposits in the body while also breaking down cholesterol; kill viruses, bacteria and fungi; and protect against heart disease.

3. Turmeric:  this popular spice, used primarily in Indian cooking, is the highest known source of beta-carotene, the antioxidant that helps protect your liver from free radical damage.  Turmeric also helps your liver heal while helping your body metabolize fats by decreasing the fat storage rate in liver cells.  Turmeric has the added advantage of being shown in study after study to protect the brain against damage, including diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

4. Cinnamon:  Researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture showed that one-quarter teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon with food helps metabolize sugar up to 20 times better than without cinnamon.  Excess sugar in the blood can lead to fat storage.  Because cinnamon balances blood sugar levels it has the added advantage of stabilizing mood and energy levels.

5. ChilesAdd some heat to your food to fire up your metabolism. Capsaicin, the active ingredient in chile peppers, significantly improves fat burning.  Additionally, chiles help boost energy levels as well.

It’s easy to benefit from the fat-burning ability of spices.  Simply start adding more fresh garlic and onions to your vegetable dishes, soups, stir-fries, stews, and curries.  Turmeric is excellent in curry dishes.  Cinnamon is not only good with sweet foods, it is also excellent in savory dishes and can be added to Asian-inspired foods like curries, stir-fries, and stews.  Chiles can be added to almost anything for a blast of heat.

June 2014 is the first-ever Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, an ideal time for all of us to take stock of whether our daily routines are enhancing or degrading the health of the all-important organ sitting between our ears.

While nothing can prevent or cure Alzheimer’s, adhering to these six habits can lead to better overall brain health:

Healthy body, healthy brain: Diabetes, heart disease—even poor gum health– have all been shown to increase a person’s risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. Conversely, individuals who exercise on a regular basis, consume diets that are rich in fruit, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats, and engage in proper mouth hygiene practices often experience a lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s in their later years.

Good sleep hygiene: A recent study from the University of California, San Francisco found that older men who didn’t get enough high-quality sleep—woke up multiple times during the night, couldn’t fall back asleep, etc.—experienced cognitive issues equivalent to the effect of an additional five years of brain aging. Build a buffer against dementia: Cognitive reserve describes the mechanism by which a person’s mind helps compensate for damage to their brain. The term has recently become a buzzword among health care professionals because research indicates that people who have larger amounts of cognitive reserve are less likely to exhibit the classic signs of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia—short term memory loss, difficulty multitasking, etc.—even if their brain scans show mental damage. This is because cognitive reserve effectively makes the mind stronger and more nimble, enabling it to come up with ways to compensate for disease-related loss of functioning.

Fancy training programs not required: Building a cognitive reserve buffer doesn’t require a bunch of fancy mental puzzles and exercises—though such activities can help. Rather, the key to constructing cognitive reserve lies in seeking out novel activities and experiences in your everyday life. For example, Shlomo Breznitz, Ph.D., co-author ofMaximum Brainpower: Challenging the Brain for Health and Wisdom, says even simple tasks—using your non-dominant hand while eating, taking an alternate route to work—can strengthen your cognitive reserve. Look at the aisles of low-fat products in any grocery store, and it might be hard to believe that fat can actually be good for you. Fats can be just as vital to your health as your daily intake of veggies and other important nutrients, giving your body energy to function, aiding brain development, helping absorb vitamins, and more.

Do you need to add fat to your diet? Read on to find out:

Add fat if: youre always hungry. If you find your stomach growling for lunch shortly after finishing breakfast, you may need more fat in your diet. Dietary fat has been shown to provide satiety, as well as regulate the appetite, preventing overeating. Even small changes to your meals can make a big impact—switch out your low-fat yogurt and milk for full-fat options, add avocado to your daily snack, or use a full-fat dressing like blue cheese on your lunch salad.

Add fat if: youre often cold. Before you start running a portable heater in the middle of June, try eating more fat. Our body’s fat cells are responsible for generating heat and keeping us warm, and “people with low body fat or who don’t get enough fat in their diets often complain of being cold,” according to registered dietician Felicia Stoler, MS.
Add fat if: you take vitamin supplements…or care about your bone, eye and heart health. Whether you take supplements or get your daily intake from the foods you eat, vitamins like A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble, meaning that they’re absorbed with dietary fat. Not enough fat in your diet and you might also be vitamin-deficient. Not ready for a dinner of bacon with a side of bacon? Try snacking on almonds, which are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
Add fat if: youre feeling mentally sluggish. If you’re having trouble concentrating or are feeling mentally tired throughout the day, consider salmon for lunch. Research has found that the omega-3 fatty acids found in foods like some popular fish, certain oils, and spinach are crucial for mental acuity and cognitive function. They’ve even been shown to possibly protect against Alzheimer’s and depression.
Add fat if: you have dry skin. If your skin is dry, flaky, or itchy, your diet may be to blame. Essential fatty acid deficiency can lead to dermatitis–and getting enough omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids has been shown to reduce sun sensitivity and diminish acne-related inflammation. EFA supplementation has also been shown to help with psoriasis treatment.
Add fat if: you have diabetes. It may sound counter-intuitive, a high-fat, low-carb diet can actually have a more positive effect on blood sugar levels than low-fat diets, according to recent research. Experts recommend healthy fat sources like lean meats, olive oil, and whole nuts, as well as avoiding white flour, white rice, and sugar. 4 Countries With the Right Approach to Dementia Care

 

By the year 2050, 277 million aging adults are expected to be dependent on  others for personal care. Of those 277 million, approximately half will be  struggling with symptoms of dementia, according to the newly released World  Alzheimer’s Report 2013. (Discover the common signs  of dementia.)

“All governments should make dementia a priority,” according to the authors  of the report, which calls upon policymakers across the globe to “transform  their system of priorities” and infuse dementia research and support efforts  with a tenfold increase in funding.

These statements echo the pleas made over the years by countless individuals  and advocacy groups; a universal cry to address the threat of the “silver  tsunami” that looms ever larger in the world’s rear view mirror.

The report itself highlights many current caregiving issues that advocates  warn will only become more concerning as time goes on. Why are family  caregivers so undervalued? What factors force people to place their loved  one in a long-term care facility? How can we preserve the quality of life of  individuals with dementia and their caregivers?

Progress is being made to address each of these problems, with different  countries adopting different strategies to find a solution to the dementia  care crisis.

The United States joins eleven other countries (Norway, Australia,  Netherlands, Scotland, Denmark, Finland, England, Wales, France, Republic of  Korea and Northern Ireland) in releasing a formal plan to address Alzheimer’s  and other dementias in their respective domains.

Improving support (both financial and emotional) for those affected by  dementia, enhancing the quality of care provided by long-term care facilities  and reducing the overall costs associated with dementia top the lists of  priorities in these plans.

Similar aims, different approaches

The global community appears to agree on the overall goals of dementia care,  but a surprising number of differences in execution occur, depending on  geography and cultural practices.

“Different places are going to have different variations in care,” says Cathy  Greenblatt, PhD, author of Love, Loss and Laughter: Seeing Alzheimer’s  Differently. “But the same things that are important in Florida are important in  Bangalore.”

After watching her grandparents (both of whom had dementia) receive little  more than maintenance care in a local facility, Greenblatt acquired a dim view  of dementia care. “The people working with my grandparents had bought in to the  idea that they were ‘gone.’ I grew up with no evidence that any kind of care  could make a meaningful difference.”

After retiring from her professorial post at Rutgers University,  Greenblatt—inspired by her childhood experiences with her grandparents and a  budding passion for photography—crisscrossed the globe in search of examples of  high quality dementia care.

Despite the cultural disparities and ideological differences of the regions  Greenblatt visited there was one central theme that united them all. No matter  which country she found herself in—India, Japan, France, or the Dominican  Republic—Greenblatt discovered that the best dementia care practices were the  ones that focused on celebrating the ongoing humanity of the person with the  disease. “The things that make a difference are the things that are  universal—treating people with dignity, being in the moment,” she says.

Here are just a few examples of the ways different countries are infusing  dignity into dementia care:

India: Money is always a significant factor when caring for  someone with dementia, no matter what side of the Equator they live on. Having  fewer finances often amplifies the burden of dementia on a person and their  family. But low-income elders in Cochin, India receive special treatment, thanks  to a group of professional staff and volunteers from the Alzheimer’s and Related  Disorders Society of India (ARDSI). While traveling around India, Greenblatt  visited the home of a woman with advanced dementia whose bed consisted of little  more than a wooden frame with a piece of cardboard over it. Still the woman was  able to receive a treatment plan and regular in-home visits from ARDSI  caregivers and social workers.

France: Greenblatt describes the remarkable transformation  of a dementia-stricken Frenchman named Marcel. In a special Snoezelen room at  the Villa Helios in Nice, France, Marcel, whose condition was causing him to act  angry and violent, was changed into a gentler, more caring soul. Snoezelen rooms  are used to calm those with cognitive disorders, such as autism  and dementia. They contain an array of different sensory stimuli, including  water beds, soothing scents, soft lighting, and even big water tubes with  bubbles piped into them.

The Netherlands: Just beyond the outskirts of Amsterdam lies  Hogewey, a quaint village occupied by just over a hundred people. The town has a  theatre, a grocery store, a beauty salon, restaurants and cafes. What makes  Hogewey different from the traditional European hamlet is the fact that nearly  half of its inhabitants have moderate or severe dementia. The remaining “residents” are in fact specially-trained caregivers who pose as beauticians and  restaurant staff, all the while making sure those with cognitive impairment  remain safe and calm.  The so-called “dementia village” is actually an innovative care facility  designed to make those suffering from memory loss feel as though they are living  regular lives and remain engaged with their environment. Residents’ rooms are  decorated based on their hobbies and interests, food preparation and service are  tailored towards individual preferences and there are always staff members  available to provide hands-on care for those who need it. Other caregivers  surreptitiously keep an eye on the residents as they go out shopping or to the  salon, always ready to step in and make sure no one endangers themselves. The  village’s single exit is manned by a staffer who tells any approaching resident  that the door is either broken or barred and offers an alternative path. This  prevents residents from wandering away and becoming lost—an especially common  concern for those with profound dementia.

The United Kingdom: The Pan-London Dementia Action Alliance  recently announced a formal push to make London the world’s first  dementia-friendly capital city. Unlike Hogewey—a self-contained village created  specifically for those with dementia—London aims to integrate the  cognitively-impaired into its pre-existing metropolis more effectively. This  will involve the coordination of countless smaller initiatives, such as making  landmarks more accessible and instructing fire fighters, policemen and bus  drivers how to identify and communicate with the dementia-stricken.

Across the world, person-centered dementia care is rapidly replacing the  outdated paradigms that relegated the cognitively impaired to wheelchairs in  locked wards.

Greenblatt is cheered by these shifting tides because that means fewer and  fewer people with dementia will be treated like her grandparents were. “It’s a  tragic disease and you have no control over the cards you’re dealt. But you do  have control over how you play the hand. There are ways to make the situation  livable for everyone involved.”
