Fruits & Vegetables May Have a Larger Mental Impact Than We Thought

Fruits & Vegetables May Have a Larger Mental Impact Than We Thought

According to new research, it just might. A new study found that high and low mental well being could be consistently associated with an individual’s consumption of fruits and vegetables.

In the study, a third of respondents with high mental well being reported eating five or more portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Less than 7 percent of those with high mental wellbeing ate less than one portion of fruits and vegetables in a day.

Dr. Saverio Stranges, the lead author of the research paper said in a statement, “The data suggest the higher an individual’s fruit and vegetable intake the lower the chance of their having low mental well being.”

Over half of respondents with low mental wellbeing ate four or less portions of fruits and vegetables daily.

“Along with smoking, fruit and vegetable consumption was the health-related behavior most consistently associated with both low and high mental well being,” Dr. Stranges said.

“These novel findings suggest that fruit and vegetable intake may play a potential role as a drive of, not just of physical, but also of mental wellbeing in the general population.”

Mental wellbeing is a key part of overall health, and it makes sense that what keeps the body healthy would keep the mind healthy as well. However, it’s about more than just a lack of mental health problems. Those with a high mental well being are more likely to be optimistic and happy, have high self-esteem, and good relationships with others.

It’s these factors that may lead some to make healthier choices with their lives, like eating more fruits and vegetables. Though the study found a link between produce and mental state, it’s hard to say which causes which, if either causes the other.

7 Ways To Get More Laughter In Your Life

7 Ways To Get More Laughter In Your Life

  • Enhances blood flow to the body’s extremities and improves cardiovascular function.
  • Plays an active part in the body’s release of endorphins and other natural mood-elevating and pain-killing chemicals.
  • Improves the transfer of oxygen and nutrients to internal organs.

Here are seven tips to help you get more laughter in your life.

Tip 1: Learn to laugh at yourself. Recognize how funny some of your behavior really is—especially your shortcomings or mistakes. We all have little idiosyncrasies or behaviors that are unique to us that we can recognize and enjoy. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Tip 2: Inject humor any time it’s appropriate. People love to laugh. Get a joke book and learn how to tell a good joke. Humor and laughter really make life enjoyable.

Tip 3: Find a cartoonist whom you find funny, and follow him or her. Humor is very individual. What I may find funny, you may not, but cartoonists, such as those in The New Yorker or on the “comics page” of newspapers, have something for everybody. Find a cartoonist who makes you laugh and bookmark their website or friend them on Facebook.

Tip 4: Watch comedy shows or videos. It’s amazingly easy to find something funny on television, such as a sitcom or comedy special, on YouTube, or through a site like Netflix, Vudu, or Amazon. Put “funniest movie” or “funniest video” or “funniest TV” or “funniest comedian” into your browser to start collecting sites and ideas.

Tip 5: Take a friend to a funny movie. Most people love to go to the movies and especially enjoy a good comedy. When people see a funny movie together, they find themselves laughing harder and longer than if they had seen the same scene by themselves. We all feed off each other’s laughter during and after the movie. Also, laughing together helps build good relationships.

Tip 6: Play with kids. Kids really know how to laugh and play. If you don’t have kids of your own, spend time with your nieces, nephews, or neighborhood children of families you know well. Become a Big Brother or Big Sister. Investigate local Little Leagues. Help out at your church’s Sunday School and at children’s events. Kids make grownups laugh and smile.

Tip 7: Ask What’s funny about this situation?“ Many times we find ourselves in seemingly impossible situations, but if we can laugh about it, somehow they become enjoyable or at least tolerable experiences. Often we hear people say, “This is something you’ll look back on and laugh about.” Well, why wait? Find the humor in the situation and enjoy a good laugh immediately.

3 Unexpected Therapies to Improve Mood

3 Unexpected Therapies to Improve Mood

Mime Therapy. You needn’t don a white face and striped shirt to mime. Miming is actually a very complex art form that encourages the coordination of both body and mind. Miming as therapy has been used to successfully help patients with Down syndrome in Houston, who find it more easy, fun, and educational to communicate their feelings through mime than through verbal explanation. Pantomime is essentially a form of “nonverbal art therapy”, and can have a profound effect on those who have difficulty expressing themselves creatively, while potentially offering benefits for those who are generally stressed or feeling low.

If you are really not into the thought of pantomime — perhaps you suffer from metamfiezomaiophobia — try turning up the beats and dancing those blues out for a similar effect. Not only does dancing, or general rhythmic movement, feel good and unleash a surge of endorphins, it also enhances your capacity to learn. Not a “dancer”? You don’t have to be. Just be confident. It is my belief that you could be the worst dancer in the world, but if you commit yourself to what you’re doing, it’s impossible to have a bad time. Bad dancers are those who are embarrassed or tentative. Let it loose, ditch the blues, and show off your best/silliest moves!

Smile Therapy. The chronically stressed can really benefit from this one. Even if it is not genuine, forcing yourself to smile and laugh can have profound, lasting impacts on your mood. Not only does smiling boost mood by releasing endorphins and serotonin, but it makes us appear more attractive, relieves stress, boosts immune system, and even lowers blood pressure. Benefits galore! What’s more, smiling and hearty laughter is contagious, so smiling at someone who is having a bad day might lift their spirits along with your own.

Light Therapy. Perhaps you have heard of this therapy in association with seasonal affective disorder. Light, or lack thereof, has the power to control our mood hormones, meaning too little sunlight could lead to feelings of inadequacy and depression. Traditionally, patients use a lightbox in the dearth of winter to encourage a brighter mood, sometimes used in conjunction with the equally intriguing concept of chromotherapy. Sunrise stimulation is particularly useful for waking up and lifting the fog on those dark, cold days. To help with your minor morning grumps at home, just open up your shades upon awakening, or go for a short walk in the early sunlight. Exposure to sunlight in the morning halts production of melatonin — which is responsible for making you feel sleepy and groggy — and will bring a jumpstart of positivity and renewal to your day — even before your first cup of coffee!

Being in a bad mood is never enjoyable. Life is short, so try to enjoy your time in the most positive way possible. Fitting a little exercise, sunlight, and smiling into your daily routine can go a long way towards making you an even happier person.

30 Uses for Coconut Oil

30 Uses for Coconut Oil

For decades, coconut oil was maligned for its high saturated-fat content. Now, however, it’s becoming the darling of many health experts.

This is because in the past decade or so, the supposed dangers of saturated fats have been seriously called into question (for more on this, see “A Big Fat Mistake“).

Meanwhile, recent research has also revealed that most of the saturated fat found in coconuts — lauric acid — is a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT), a type of fat particularly coveted for its health and fitness benefits.

“MCTs are fats that digest and absorb more rapidly,” says Adriane Angarano, CN, a Seattle-based functional and holistic nutritionist. “They go directly to the liver to be utilized for energy instead of stored as fat.”

Research shows that eating MCTs helps you burn more calories, satisfy hunger more quickly, and assist in regulating weight better than the long-chain triglycerides predominant in most vegetable oils.

In studies on rats, virgin coconut oil has been shown to reduce blood serum levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol while raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol. It also appears to help blood coagulation and improve antioxidant status.

Nutritionists say MCTs can also play a key role in higher-fat, lower-carb diets, which seem to help epilepsy, cancer, and Alzheimer’s patients.

Organic, extra-virgin coconut oil — the gold standard in terms of flavor and nutrition — also has rich anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties.

Plus, it serves an amazing number of non-edible purposes. In coconut-loving Malaysia, the word for coconut tree translates as “the tree of a thousand uses.” Here are just a few.

Nutrition & Cooking

Coconut-Oil

  • Instead of butter, fry or scramble your eggs in coconut oil, and try slathering it on toast.
  • Stir a spoonful in your oatmeal or spread on pancakes for a lower glycemic load.
  • Making your own granola? Baking treats? Swap in coconut oil instead of typical vegetable oil or shortening.
  • Whirl into smoothies for longer-lasting energy and an instant hit of cholesterol-improving lauric acid.
  • Even unrefined coconut oil has a relatively high smoke point, making it great for higher-temperature cooking, such as stir-frying or sautéing. Try cooking your dark leafy greens using coconut oil and a little sea salt.
  • Make theater-style popcorn by heating kernels in coconut oil in a heavy kettle.  Once popped, drizzle a mixture of melted coconut oil and butter over the top.
  • As an alternative to a latte or coffee with cream, in a blender combine 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tablespoon unsalted grassfed butter, and 1 cup of coffee until it’s creamy and no oil is floating on the surface, about 20 to 30 seconds. Spike with vanilla or cinnamon, if desired.
  • Mash into sweet potatoes or use to cook sweet-potato fries for a rich, nutty flavor.
  • When making homemade mayo, replace half the olive oil with coconut oil. Or replace the oil in your favorite homemade salad dressing.
  • For a quick treat, melt and mix with dark chocolate to make fudge or bark. Or pour the liquid mixture over a scoop of cold ice cream. It will harden instantly, like on a classic dipped cone.
  • Eat it by the spoonful, right out of the jar — a quick supplement and snack combined.

Body Care

Coconut-Oil-and-Bath-Products

  • Mix a little baking soda with coconut oil for a quick homemade tooth polish.
  • Make a chemical-free deodorant from solid coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder or cornstarch, plus a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender. (For a recipe,  see “Homemade Deodorant: B.O. No Mo’“.)
  • The natural analgesic properties of virgin coconut oil can help take some of the sting out of bug bites, chicken pox, and poison ivy, and aid skin in healing faster. Coconut oil is also a natural sunburn soother.
  • Skip petroleum-based lip balms and create your own from coconut oil, beeswax,  and vitamin E. (For a simple recipe, see http://j.mp/c2lipbalms.)
  • Massage your hair and scalp with coconut oil prior to shampooing to promote hair health.
  • Use as an all-over body moisturizer to smooth dry skin and add sheen. Slather on after your shower, or try adding a few tablespoons to your bath. Great as massage oil, too.
  • Use as a shaving cream — great for chemically sensitive folks.
  • New parents use coconut oil to help combat diaper rash. Not only does it sooth a baby’s bum, it also contains antibacterial agents that fight infection and promote healing.

General Health

Coconut-Oil-and-General-Health

  • Consider taking coconut oil as a supportive treatment in preventing and fighting systemic fungal conditions, including athlete’s foot and vaginal yeast infections. The oil’s caprylic acid helps degrade the cellular membrane of theCandida albicans fungus, limiting its ability to colonize.
  • To help relieve seasonal allergy discomfort and itch, try rubbing a little oil in your nostrils. It’s also a good immune-system booster and a strong anti-inflammatory, both of which can help ease allergy symptoms.
  • For earaches, melt a little bit of coconut oil, cool to room temperature, place in an eyedropper, and put several drops in the affected ear. The oil’s antimicrobial qualities can help fight low-grade infections.
  • Anti-inflammatory coconut oil can help canker sores and cold sores heal faster.
  • Allow a tablespoon of coconut oil to melt in your mouth, then swish it around for 10, ideally 20, minutes to draw out impurities and moisturize oral tissue. Then spit it out and rinse with water. Known as “oil pulling,” this ancient practice has grown increasingly popular in recent years. Research has shown it effectively combats bad breath and plaque.
  • Try coconut oil as an acne preventive. A 2009 study found that lauric acid can kill the bacteria that promote inflammatory acne. Rub a bit onto vulnerable areas.

Household

Coconut-Oil-and-household

  • Season your cast-iron pan with solidified coconut oil. Coat interior surface, then let the pan sit in a 300-degree-F oven for 20 minutes.
  • Create a quick furniture polish by mixing 3/4 teaspoon coconut oil and 1/4 cup lemon juice. First remove dust, then rub in coconut mixture with a clean, soft cloth, and buff to a gleaming shine.
  • Combine 1/4 cup of coconut oil with 20 drops of citronella oil for a nontoxic bug repellent.
  • Gum in your hair? Unknown sticky substance on the couch? Combine coconut oil with baking soda and rub.
  • Use it on your dog to ward off fleas, soothe dry skin, and smooth fur. (Some pet owners also mix coconut oil into pet food for an extra boost of nutrients and healthy fats.)

Leesa recommends using organic coconut oil!

The Amazing Healing Power of Blueberries

The Amazing Healing Power of Blueberries

“Have blueberries whenever you are low – destiny will change and you will be high.” Adam Voichester

6 Top Health Benefits of Blueberries

1. More antioxidants per serving than all other fruits, vegetables, spices and seasonings.
Antioxidants are compounds in foods that neutralize chemicals called free radicals (unstable molecules), produced by oxidation in the human body. Antioxidants found in foods protect your cells from the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are produced when your body digests your food for energy and by environmental toxins. They can damage cells; have been linked to conditions such as heart and liver disease, cancer and weakened immune system.

2. Great for the Brain – They Improve Memory.
Blueberry juice improves memory in older adults. This is good news for us baby boomers!

“When it comes to brain protection, there is nothing quite like blueberries, call the blueberry the brain berry,” says Dr. James Joseph, at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

3. Anti-Cancer Benefits.
Studies with blueberries have found that breast cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer, and cancers of the small intestine were reduced. These studies were on human cells or laboratory animals so we are still waiting for more research, but so far research points to astounding healing powers. Good news is there is an increasing percentage of blueberry research focusing on anti-cancer benefits.

4. Good for the Heart.
Much research has shown how good blueberries are for the heart. “Women who ate at least three servings of blueberries and strawberries per week had fewer heart attacks. Blueberries and strawberries contain high levels of compounds that have cardiovascular benefits.”

5. Reduces Risk of Diabetes. One of the antioxidants found in blueberries, anthocyanins which give them their blue color has been found to lower risk of Type 2 diabetes. People who ate two or more servings of blueberries weekly reduced their risk of developing diabetes by 23 percent in one study. Blueberries are low on the Glycemic Index, so people with diabetes can easily consume them.

6. Help with Weight Loss. Want to activate those fat burning genes? Blueberries can do that with the catechins found in them. Eating foods full of catechins will double total weight loss, according to research at Tufts University. Blueberries may even help reduce belly fat.

Full of Nutrition!
Blueberries contain vitamin C, B complex, vitamin E, vitamin A, copper, selenium, zinc, iron, magnesium, manganese and potassium.

“When any lagged behind, the cry of ‘blueberries’ was most effectual to bring them up.”  Henry David Thoreau

Blueberry Trivia

  • Blueberries were called “star berries” by Native Americans because the five points of blueberry blossoms make a star shape. Also, they believed that the ‘Great Sprit’ created the berries to feed their hungry children during famine.
  • The Shakers made the blue paint for the woodwork on their houses from sage blossoms, indigo, blueberry skins & milk.
  • The U.S. is the world’s largest producer of blueberries. If all the blueberries grown in North America in one year were spread out in a single layer, they would cover a four-lane highway from New York to Chicago.
  • Blueberries are the second most popular berry in the US.  Their consumption has more than doubled within the last 6 years. Does this mean more people are aware of their benefits?

Buying Blueberries

It’s best to eat organic blueberries. Most U.S. grown blueberries can have high levels of pesticide residue that could affect liver, and other body functions. Blueberries are in the top fifteen list of crops with the most pesticides, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Blueberries are the least perishable of all the berries.
