5 Signs of a Responsible Dog Owner

1. You Give Them Space.

Some dogs are very comfortable around a multitude of dogs and activity, many aren’t and need extra space. Learn to read your dog’s stress signals and make sure you keep her in an environment that is safe, determined by her needs. If you are aware of signs of stress in crowds, then it’s better to leave her home than take her with you to your local wine and art fair this weekend. Some dog-friendly events aren’t always friendly for all dogs.

2. You Pay Attention To Their Sound Environment.

We brings dogs into our human world and we say “adjust.” Some do, many don’t. When dogs can’t orient the source of a sound to determine whether it is safe, they can easily go into sensory overload and develop anxiety behaviors along with health problems. Humans hear sounds between 20-20,000 Hz. Dogs hear at least twice as high, sometimes all the way up to 55,000 Hz. While I think it’s great that more events and public places are dog friendly, so often those environments are created for humans. A fundraising party for dogs and their people that benefits your local shelter, doesn’t benefit your dog when a loud band is playing. Please be careful of your dog’s sound environment.

3. You Treat Dogs Like Dogs, Not Little Humans.

As humans, we tend to anthropomorphize our pets. It’s only natural if we love them. But, when we start to understand life from their point of view, we realize that dogs rarely show affection the way humans do. Most don’t like being pat on the head, especially from a stranger, and most don’t naturally take to hugs.

4. You Prioritize Humane Training.

While it’s our responsibility to train our dogs, it’s also our responsibility to humanely train them with positive reinforcement. Humane training is not only the kind, loving way to train, but it’s scientifically proven and it works and helps to create an emotional bond between you and your dog that is priceless.

5. You Provide Opportunities for Stimulation.

We can read a book or study a subject online when we want to learn, grow, and educate ourselves. But, it’s our responsibility to keep our dog’s minds stimulated. Feed her out of food puzzles instead of a bowl, enjoy a canine sport together, and teach her new tricks that help her keep thinking and making decisions.

What’s the Best Sleep Position?

 It makes sense that your sleep position can have an impact on your overall health, right? We’ve all woken up from time to time with a crick in our necks or a weird leg cramp, and it is no fun at all. Spending eight hours on your side or on your back puts pressure on nerves and muscles, and we can feel the effects of a wonky sleep position the next day.

If you deal with chronic pain or conditions like acid reflux, your sleep position can have an even more powerful impact on your comfort. Finding the best sleep position can make the difference between restorative rest and a night of tossing and turning.

So, what’s the best sleep position? It depends.

To alleviate back and shoulder pain, you can combine a beneficial sleep position with some strategic pillow placement to give your body extra support while you snooze. Pillows can help you sleep through bouts of acid reflux, too. And if foot pain is keeping you awake, just tucking your sheets more loosely can make a difference.

Neck Pain
Keep the neck in a neutral position. Avoid sleeping on the stomach. Too many pillows can put your neck in a bent position. Keep your pillow above your shoulders. Some experts suggest using a rolled up hand towel to support the neck.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea & Snoring
Sleep on your side or stomach to avoid impaired breathing. One way to keep from rolling onto your back is to sew a tennis ball into the back of your pajama top.

Acid Reflux
Use pillows to elevate your head or use bricks to elevate the front legs of the bed. Otherwise, sleep on your side.

Shoulder Pain
Don’t sleep on the shoulder that causes you pain. Or, if you do, place a pillow next to you and place your arm over it — almost as if you’re hugging another person.

Back Pain
The best sleep position for back pain is generally on your back with a pillow under your knees or a rolled up towel under the small of your back.

On your side, put a pillow between your knees for extra support. This is also good for people with hip and knee problems. A fetal-like position can help with lumbar spinal stenosis.

Sleeping on your stomach can be hard on your back and neck. But if you must, put a pillow under your back and lower abdomen to relieve strain.

Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Faciitis is an inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of the foot caused by running or poor arch support. Keep your ankles and feet in a relaxed position. Avoid tucking in the sheets too tightly.

5 Ways Chronic Stress is Bad for Your Body

 Stress causes hair loss.

The average person loses 50-100 hairs per day. But when you’re stressed out, up to three-quarters of your hair can fall out, thanks to a sex hormone called androgen that (temporarily) messes with your follicles. To combat the effects, make sure you’re eating a balanced diet that encourages healthy hair growth—think salmon (for the protein, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids), walnuts and walnut oil (for the biotin and vitamin E), and lentils (for the protein, iron, and biotin).

Stress can kill your sex drive.

Researchers hypothesize that the stress hormone cortisol can lead to low levels of physical arousal for women. The cure? Sex, actually—it’s been shown to actually relieve stress. Exercise can help as well, by increasing blood flow (including to the genitals).

Stress can mess with your skin.

When under stress, your body releases hormones like cortisol, which can increase your skin’s oil production and cause breakouts. It can also cause flare-ups of pre-existing skin conditions, like eczema. For chronic conditions, make sure you’re sticking to your treatment plan during stressful times and using noncomedogenic makeup and skincare products.

Stress makes you forgetful and absent-minded.

Left your keys in the fridge? Blanked on a big meeting? It could be due to stress. The stress hormone cortisol reduces synapses in your pre-frontal cortex, the area of your brain that’s responsible for your short-term memory. Chronic stress can even lead to long-term problems with information processing. Activities like yoga and meditation can help keep your mind sharp when you’re going through a stressful period.

Stress can make you achey.

Your body produces hormones that increase muscle tension and pain sensitivity when you’re stressed—a combination that can lead to backaches, a tight jaw, and shoulder and neck pain. Try to relieve the stress-induced aches by exercising 30 minutes a day—working out releases hormones that decrease pain—and finish up with stretches for your neck, shoulders, and back.
