Top 10 Toxic Products You Don’t Need

2. Fragrance products: Chemical fragrances found in everyday products like air fresheners, dryer sheets, and perfumes can trigger asthma. Some of the chemicals mimic estrogen, a process that may increase the risk of breast cancer. For example, diethyl phthalate (DEP) is absorbed through the skin and can accumulate in human fat tissue. Phthalates are suspected carcinogens and hormone disruptors that are increasingly being linked to reproductive disorders. To be safe, choose fragrance-free products or use those scented with natural fragrances like essential oils.

3. Canned food: It’s probably shocking to find a food item on a toxic product list, but it’s no mistake. Food cans are lined with bisphenol-A (BPA). Most experts believe this is our main source of exposure to BPA, which has been linked to early puberty, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression in young girls and much more. Many food brands have gone BPA free, including Campbell’s Soup. But beware: some companies have switched to BPS, BPA’s chemical cousin, which has been linked many of the same health effects. To be safe, opt for fresh, frozen, dried or jarred foods.

4. Dirty cleaners: Admit it: it’s a bit odd to wipe toxic chemicals all over your oven, floors, counters, and toilets to get them “clean.” Corrosive or caustic cleaners, such as the lye and acids found in drain cleaners, oven cleaners and acid-based toilet bowl cleaners are the most dangerous cleaning products because they burn skin, eyes and internal tissue easily. It’s simple and effective to use non-toxic cleaners or to make your own. You won’t miss the toxic fumes in your home either!

5. Pesticides: This is a huge category of products, but they deserve inclusion in their entirety because of how extremely toxic they are. They’re made to be. That’s how they kill things. But, solving your pest problem may leave you with another problem – residual poisons that linger on surfaces, contaminate air, and get tracked onto carpet from the bottom of shoes. There are so many non-toxic ways to eliminate pests and weeds. Next time, get on the offense without chemicals.

6. Bottled water: Americans buy half a billion bottles of water every week, according to the film The Story of Bottled Water. Most people buy bottled water thinking they’re avoiding any contaminants that may be present in their tap water. For the most part, they’re wrong. Bottled water can be just as, or even more, contaminated than tap water. In fact, some bottled water IS tap water – just packaged (in plastic that can leach chemicals into the water) and over-priced. Also, from manufacture to disposal, bottled water creates an enormous amount of pollution, making our water even less drinkable. Do yourself and the world a favor and invest in a reusable stainless steel water bottle and a water filter.

7. Lead lipstick: Can you believe lead, a known neurotoxin that has no safe level of exposure, is found in women’s lipsticks? A study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered lead in 400 lipsticks tested, at levels two times higher than found in a previous FDA study. There is no safe level of lead exposure. Pregnant women and children are at special risk, as lead can interfere with normal brain development. To find a safe lipstick, as well as other personal care products like shampoo and lotion, check out the Skin Deep Database.

8. Nonstick Cookware: Studies show that perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), which make products stain-and stick resistant, are linked to cancer and low birth weights. They are incredibly persistent and can now be found all over the globe, including in the bodies of polar bears. Not only are PFCs found in cookware, but microwave popcorn bags and pizza boxes, some dental flosses, furniture and clothing. To steer clear of PFCs, avoid products made with Teflon or list ingredients beginning with “fluoro” or “perfluoro.”

9. Triclosan: This antibacterial agent is found in soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes, deodorants, and even clothing. Studies have found triclosan may harm the human immune system, which makes people more likely to develop allergies, and reduces muscle strength in humans and animals. The FDA warns consumers to read labels for triclosan and recommends using plain soap to clean up. Instead of using antibacterial hand sanitizers made with triclosan, choose an alternative made with at least 60 percent alcohol.

10. Oil-based paints and finishes: There are 300 toxic chemicals and 150 carcinogens potentially present in oil-based paint, according to a John Hopkins University study. Still interested in coating your walls and furniture with this gunk? I hope not. Look for water-based options – ideally those that are low- or no-VOC. You could also explore natural finishes like milk paint and vegetable or wax-based wood finishes. What’s at the top of your list of toxic products you don’t need?

Lycopene, the Powerful Nutrient That May Help Prevent Cancer

Lycopene is what gives red fruits and vegetables their bright red color. You will find lycopene in red foods like tomatoes, watermelon, apricots, red grapefruit, guava, red carrots, papaya and rose hips.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that inhibits free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that have an unpaired electron and are therefore unstable. The molecule stabilizes itself by stealing electrons from live cell membranes. This damages the cell and promotes disease.

The super antioxidant, Lycopene neutralizes free radicals by binding to them and stabilizing them. The free radicals no longer create cell damage that can result in diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Lycopene has been found to help reduce prostate, lung, pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast, and cervix and stomach cancers according to Scientific studies.

lycopene sources

As you can see above, tomato products are high sources of lycopene — but raw tomato is significantly lower.

“The best sources of lycopene are tomatoes and tomato products, which is where about 80 percent of lycopene in the average American diet comes from.” says the Physician Committee for Responsible Health

According to the Oxford Journals, consuming tomatoes and tomato-based products have been shown to lower risk of a variety of cancers. The cancers which responded the most were the lung, stomach, and prostate gland.  Research also indicated that lycopene may be preventive for cancers of the breast, cervix, oral cavity, colorectum, esophagus, and pancreas. Studies go on to say that it is important to consume tomatoes and tomato products rather than purified lycopene supplements.

??????????????????????????

Cancer and Tomatoes

  • Tomatoes reduce breast cancer due to high amounts of carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene and total carotenoids), according to research from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
  • Tomatoes may help prevent prostate cancer. A study found that men who ate more than 10 portions of tomatoes or tomato products per week have an 18 percent reduced risk of prostate cancer compared to men who ate less than ten.

watermelon-slice-close-up

How To Get Lycopene In Your Diet

  • The best way to get lycopene into the body is to cook with tomatoes and eat them in a meal that provides a small amount of fat. One study showed that when oil was added to heated tomato juice, the blood lycopene levels increased more than when plain, unheated tomato was consumed. Now, that obviously doesn’t mean you should eat lots of chips with ketchup thinking you are helping prevent cancer. Too much oil has its own health risks.
  • As said above, lycopene supplement extracts do not work well. This is most likely because there are other phytochemicals in tomatoes that may be needed to do the job. Eat real food: eat your fruits and vegetables!
  • Don’t forget watermelon! Although a slice of watermelon has only one half the amount of lycopene as a glass of tomato juice, think about how much watermelon you can eat! Watermelon makes a great breakfast just by itself.  This is important for those who don’t like tomatoes or avoid them because they are in the nightshade produce family.

Leesa recommending choosing organic tomatoes and organic tomatoe sauce in glass jars only.

We have already established that eating healthy is hard. Navigating a Whole Foods is not for the faint of heart. Which fats are bad? Which vegetables are best? Does anyone really know? Maybe, maybe not, but thanks to the Nutrition Action Healthletter, we can at least see how all the famed veggies stack up.

The agency responsible for the newsletter gathered nutritional info made available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Nutrient Database, and it ranked the world’s most popular vegetables, taking into account their calories and Vitamin K, lutein, Vitamin C, Potassium, and fiber content. Some veggies were obvious superstars, racking in scores of over 1,000 points, but others didn’t fare so well, coming in with a score of 54 points, and yes, iceberg lettuce, we’re looking at you.

10. Carrots

Coming up first on our list, sitting at the No. 10 spot is a vegetable that is arguably pretty easy to love: the carrot. One serving of this orange veggie is only 30 calories, and it comes packed with fiber, Vitamin K, and lutein. Lutein is a caretenoid concentrated in the retinas of your eyes, and it’s a necessary component of normal vision. It is suggested that eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables that contain lutein may also decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease, so it appears as though your grandma was actually on to something. There’s a reason she told you eating carrots is good for your eyes.

9. Radicchio (raw)

Radicchio is next! Sounds like the king of the vegetables, yes? And the Nutrition Action Healthletter supports that ranking. Sometimes known as Italian chicory, two cups of this good stuff yields a whopping 20 calories and a score of 467 points on the newsletter’s rank. Radicchio also comes laden with Vitamin K and lutein, along with Vitamin C and potassium. When you’re on the hunt for radicchio in the grocery store, seek out the leaf vegetable with white-veined red leaves. Though it has a bitter and spicy taste as raw, grilling or roasting helps mellow out its flavor. Unfortunately, radicchio is only listed at No. 9 on our list in its raw form, but we won’t blame you if you wade into the radicchio waters roasting the vegetable first.

8. Sweet potato

Coming in at No. 8 is American’s favorite superfood, the sweet potato. The white potato’s healthy counterpart racks up a score of 492 points on the Nutrition Action Healthletter’s list, and it’s all thanks to the ample amount of Vitamin C one small potato with skin provides, along with potassium, fiber, vitamins, and magnesium. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, there’s a reason healthy eaters love to love this naturally sweetened carbohydrate.

7. Mustard greens

But the sweet potato still isn’t healthier than seven other vegetables that reign supreme, and one of them is the mustard greens. One serving of these veggies yields just 10 calories, but its nutritional profile is worth much, much more. Mustard greens are chock full of Vitamin K, lutein, Vitamin C, and fiber. They’ve been noted on lists as the world’s healthiest foods, and just in case you’re ready to give mustard greens a try, look out for the plant that often occurs in some form in African, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and soul food cuisine.

6. Pumpkin (canned)

Continuing to make our way down the list, we come to another favorite orange veggie, because pumpkin shouldn’t only be purposed as a vehicle for your Halloween jack-o-lanterns. Rather, in its canned form, it racks up 577 points on the list highlighted on the Nutrition Action Healthletter, and there, experts praise its Vitamin K, Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber content. Bake this baby into baked goods and pride yourself on eating one of the top six healthiest veggies.

5. Turnip greens

Back on our greens game, we come to another impressive plant, the turnip greens. Turn up for turnips. One serving of these babies comes to only 20 calories, and for that measly total, you get vitamin K, lutein, vitamin C, and fiber. Sorry, potassium, turnip greens aren’t a vehicle for you. These root vegetables go by a lot of different names, but Americans tend to either roast them, sauté them, mash them (with bacon!), or puree them into a soup. It’s your choice how you consume them, but as their score of 714 points evidences, you should definitely say yes to the turnips.

4. Swiss chard

Swiss chard comes in at the No. 4 spot, boasting an impressive score of 717 points, just slightly higher than the value of turnip greens. This leafy green vegetable is often used in Mediterranean cooking and covers all the nutrient bases, coming packed with Vitamin K, lutein, Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. It is also rich in minerals and protein. Healthy eaters have been chomping down on this veggie for decades now, but if you’re new to swiss chard land, sauté it or roast the chard leaves first. Cooking mellows out the bitter taste of this vegetable and yields a pleasant, albeit earthy, flavor.

3. Collard greens

And you don’t have to be from the South to enjoy this next highlighted vegetable, although that’s where collard greens enjoy the most fanfare. These plants are known for their large, dark-colored, edible leaves, and they’re easily made into a number of popular dishes, including good old sautéed collard greens with bacon. Loaded with Vitamin K, lutein, Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, there really is no reason you shouldn’t be at least trying to incorporate collard greens in some of your meal plans, especially considering one serving only yields 20 calories. C’mon now.

2. Spinach (raw)

Getting closer to the distinction of best, vegetable, ever, we come to spinach, a vegetable that many consumers have grown to love — no pun intended. In its raw form, spinach totals 968 points on the scale provided by the Nutrition Action Healthletter, and it’s no surprise, considering the green vegetable is teeming with vitamin A, lutein, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, manganese, folate, betaine, iron, vitamin B2, calcium, potassium, vitamin B6, folic acid, copper, protein, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids. Hide spinach on your salad, in your eggs, in your smoothies, or even in your desserts, and you’ll be benefiting from its impressive nutritional profile.

1. Kale

And the greatest vegetable of them? King Kale, killing the competition with its score of 1,392 points. It’s hardly a surprise that kale takes the No. 1 distinction, considering it’s the it veggie healthy eaters love to love, but now we fully understand why. This vegetable has been around since the dark ages, but it’s now one of hottest greens that can be found on foodies’ plates, especially if it is massaged. Raw kale previously seemed almost unpalatable due to its bitter taste and unappetizing texture, but now that chefs and foodies have discovered that massaging the vegetable with olive oil and salt can break down its tough cellulose structure, healthy consumers are all about reaping the benefits of the greens packed with Vitamins A, C, and K, B6, and calcium. Case in point? Eat your kale, and like it too.

Leesa recommends always chooseing organic vegetables!

12 Healthiest Foods for Your Heart

1. Oatmeal

oatmeal

No longer the bland, sticky stuff of generations past, oatmeal has been upgraded to a popular, delicious vessel for all your favorite spices and mix-ins. Approved by the FDA as a certified heart-healthy food, oatmeal contains soluble fibers that help lower LDL cholesterol. In 2008, a study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found that the link between oats and cardiovascular health is even stronger than researchers previously thought—the tasty breakfast food also reduces your risk for elevated blood pressure and prevents the hardening of the arteries.

2. Carrots

Bugs Bunny would be proud. According to the British Journal of Nutrition, eating more deep-orange-colored fruits and vegetables is linked to a lower risk of coronary heart disease. Because of their rich beta-carotene content, carrots specifically have been found to lower the risk of CHD by 32%. An added bonus for the ladies: if you eat carrots, you’ll significantly reduce your chance of having a heart attack!

3. Whole Grains

Whole grains

Devotees to the low-carb lifestyle might need to reconsider their allegiance; studies show that people who eat whole grains tend to have a lower risk of heart disease than people who don’t. In fact, in one Harvard study, researchers found that people who ate a high-fiber diet full of whole grains had a 30% lower risk of heart disease. Why, you ask? Whole grains contain antioxidants, phytoestrogens, and phytoserols, all of which protect against coronary disease.

4. Salmon

Salmon

No matter whether its smoked or grilled or pan-seared, this tasty fish is full of omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to improve the metabolic markers for heart disease. A 2010 review article in “Current Atherosclerosis Reports” concluded that omega-3-rich fish—like salmon—help protect against heart disease and reduce mortality in patients with congestive heart failure. Leesa recommends you always choose Wild Caught Salmon.  Contact Heather with  atlantawildsalmon@gmail.com to place your order the most delicious salmon we’ve found!  Join her on Facebook at: Wild Salmon Atlanta… https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wild-Salmon-Atlanta/288042918059227

5. Soy Milk

milk-choice-alternative-dairy-soy-hemp-almond-health-rice-coconut-difference-spry

This popular dairy alternative packs a punch in terms of its heart-healthy benefits. In fact, doctors specifically recommend soy milk for people with high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease. The reason? It significantly lowers your blood concentrations of triglyceride and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and raises your level of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). More simply put, it makes you less likely to develop a clogged artery and protects your body from heart disease.

6. Dark Chocolate

Dark Chocolate

We can definitely get on board with this one! Dark chocolate has gotten popular in health circles during recent years due to its beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system. In moderation, cocoa beans help protect against heart disease because they are rich in flavonoids, a type of antioxidant that lowers blood pressure, improves blood flow to the brain and heart, and makes blood platelets less likely to clot.

7. Blueberries

Blueberries

Little, tasty, and good for you! In a 2013 Harvard study, researchers found that women who ate more blueberries were 34% less likely to suffer a heart attack than women who ate them less frequently, most likely due to the flavonoids known as “anthocyanins” that give the berries their color and help prevent plaque buildup in the arteries. The people with the healthiest hearts ate three or more half-cup servings of berries each week.

8. Almonds

Almonds

Who knew that all that late-afternoon snacking could be so good for you? Four recent, large-scale epidemiological studies (Nurses Health Study, Iowa Health Study, Adventist Health Study, Physicians Health Study) concluded that nut consumption leads to a lower risk of heart disease. Almonds in particular contain a significant amount of monounsaturated fat, which helps lower cholesterol, and Vitamin E—a helpful antioxidant.

9. Spinach

Spinach

Maybe Popeye was on to something. Because of its high potassium level, spinach helps people with high blood pressure negate the effects of sodium on their body. Its iron content also helps improve the quality of your blood.

10. Red Bell Peppers

Stuffed Red Peppers

Add a little spice to your life with these red superfoods. Unlike green peppers, red pepperscontain a big dose of lycopene, which make them a fantastic dietary choice to promote heart health. They’re also filled with cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and Vitamin A and C, antioxidants proven to help the cardiovascular system.

11. Sweet Potato

Sweet Potatoes

We’re all about this Thanksgiving staple, even after the holiday season is long past! Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of magnesium, a mineral often overlooked and under-consumed by Americans. Absolutely vital to the human body, magnesium promotes healthy arteries, blood, bone, heart, muscle, and nerve function.

Eat this in: Baked Sweet Potato Fries

  1. Red Wine

health-headline-round-up-weight-loss-cut-cancer-risk-red-wine-anti-aging-facebook-new-organ-donor-loneliness-donate-food-inspiration-spry

Red wine—in moderation—has long been regarded as beneficial to heart health. Antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart, reduce LDL, and prevent blood clots. Bottoms up!

Leesa recommends always choosing organic food and wine!

2. Dark Chocolate

If you needed another reason to indulge in dark chocolate, it’s this one: dark chocolate can make you happier. A study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that consuming chocolate high in cocoa flavanols increased levels of calmness and contentedness.

3. Eggs

With their essential fatty acids, eggs help your body to naturally produce serotonin. Low serotonin levels are linked to depression, anxiety, insomnia and fatigue.

4. Almonds

Almonds pack a lot of nutrients, including folate and magnesium. Magnesium is essential to brain health, and studies have linked it to a reduction in depression, but is often deficient in modern diets. So eat more of those almonds!

5. Lentils

Lentils are a good source of folate which is essential for your mood, and a cup of cooked lentils provides 90 percent of the recommended daily allowance of folic acid. Lentils also have the amino acid L-tyrosine, which your brain uses to make the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, therefore helping your brain to combat depression.

6. Pumpkin Seeds

A zinc deficiency can trigger depressive moods, but fortunately pumpkin seeds are packed with the essential mineral. Pumpkin seeds also contain L-tryptophan, a natural mood booster.

7. Oatmeal

While some think oatmeal is one of the most boring foods on the planet, it’s good for your mental state. That’s thanks to a lot of things, including high levels of magnesium, which help your brain fight depression and anxiety. Since it’s also a great source of soluble fiber, it helps stabilize blood sugar levels, which helps you avoid mood swings.

8. Honey

The nutrients in honey produce a calming effect, helpful if you’re feeling anxious, which is why many mix it into a cup of tea in the evening. A natural sweetener, it’s also a good natural energy booster, so if you feel like you’re dragging, pop a spoonful in your mouth. Nature’s energy gel.

9. Flaxseed Oil

Our standard American Diet has left us very omega-3 deficient and that can be bad for your mental state: omega-3 has been shown to be an effective supplement for fighting depression. Flaxseed oil is an easy way to get a mega dose of omega-3 essential fatty acids, helping to improve your mood.

10. Water

A glass of water may be the simplest thing you can ingest, but it’s very helpful. Mild dehydration has been shown to dampen moods, which means if you want to feel mentally stronger, make sure you’re getting enough H2O throughout the day.

11. Asparagus

Feel like you’ve been having a lot of mood swings lately? Get some asparagus on your plate, because it is very high in folic acid — a deficiency that is common in people with depression.  Leesa recommends always choosing organic foods when available!

Top 17 Vegan Sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

(Leesa recommends choosing organic seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables!)

Flax Seeds– One ounce of flax seeds contains 6388mg of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Chia Seeds—One ounce of chia seeds contains 4915mg of Omega 3s.

Hemp Seeds– One ounce of hemp seeds provides 1100 of Omega 3s.

Spinach—One cup of cooked spinach has 352 mg of Omega 3s.

Winter Squash—One cup of cooked squash contains 338 mg of Omega 3s.

Cauliflower—One cup of cooked cauliflower contains 208 mg Omega 3s.

Blueberries—One cup of fresh blueberries contains 174 mg of Omega 3s.

Wild Rice—One cup of cooked wild rice contains 156 mg Omega 3s.

Mangoes—One mango contains 77 mg Omega 3s.

Honeydew melon—One cup of honeydew melon contains 58 mg Omega 3s.

Walnuts—One quarter cup of walnuts contains 2700 mg of Omega 3s.

Tofu—One four ounce serving of tofu contains 600 mg of Omega 3s.

Cashews—A one ounce serving of cashews contains 221 mg of Omega 3s.

Sesame Seeds—A one ounce serving of sesame seeds contains 105 mg of Omega 3s.

Spirulina—One tablespoon of spirulina powder contains 58 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Pumpkin Seeds—One quarter cup of pumpkin seeds contains 40 mg of Omega 3s.

Mustard Oil—One tablespoon of mustard oil has 826 mg Omega 3s; however, mustard oil should not be used in higher doses due to possible liver toxicity.

There’s a lot of discrepancy about the amount of Omega 3s a person needs on a daily basis.  To make matters worse, it’s a bit complex.  Here’s why: there are three different types of Omega 3s–EPA, DHA, and ALA.  Additionally, most experts agree that the amount should be between 500 to 1500 mg of EPA and 300 to 1000 mg of DHA, or about 800 to 1100 mg of ALA, as a starting point.  If a person is dealing with specific health concerns the numbers may increase.  The body can convert ALA to EPA and DHA, although there is some concern about how effectively ALA converts to DHA.  Additionally, the ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s plays a significant role. While it is about 1:30 in most people’s diets (with far more Omega 6s than 3s) it should be closer to a 1:1 ratio.

6 Superfoods for Your Dog

1. Chia Seeds

This little seed is packed with omega 3 fatty acids, which improve your pet’s skin and coat, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system. Because chia seeds are so high in omega 3s, they are a great option for dogs who are unable to tolerate fish oils. The combination of high fat and fiber cause chia seeds to be digested more slowly, leading to a sustained release of energy for your active dog. To add these nutrients to your dog’s diet, try sprinkling some chia seeds over wet food, or mix chia seeds with warm water to create a gel that can be added to dry food.

2. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which supports eye health, helps maintain a healthy skin and coat, and acts as an antioxidant to prevent disease.  These tubers are also a source of Vitamin C to support immunity and fiber to promote healthy digestion. Evidence has also shown that sweet potatoes help to remove fatty cells from the liver to help maintain healthy organ function. Try cooking sweet potatoes to add to your pet’s meals, or look for freeze-dried sweet potato treats.

3. Kale

Just like humans, dogs reap great benefits from adding dark, leafy greens to their diet. Kale, which is packed with vitamins and minerals like calcium, vitamin K, and vitamin C, is one of the best options for your pooch. Because kale is a cruciferous vegetable, it contains a compounds called isothiocyanates, which have been shown to help prevent cancer. Kale also contains a number of flavonoids, which can help reduce chronic joint pain and reduce daily wear and tear on the joints. To prepare, slice kale and steam before adding to your dog’s dish. Just be sure to avoid kale if your dog has had bladder stones or kidney disease, because it contains oxalates which can aggravate these conditions.

4. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is rich in fiber, an indigestible carbohydrate that improves digestive health and can be used to treat both constipation and diarrhea. Pumpkin is also rich in carotenoids, which are plant pigments that help to reduce the risk of cancer, boost the immune system, and help prevent cardiovascular and eye diseases. Try adding a spoonful of pumpkin puree to your dog’s food – just be sure to buy pure canned pumpkin rather than pumpkin filling, which contains added sugar and spices.

5. Blueberries

This little berry is packed with polyphenols to help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which are help to prevent disease. These antioxidants also help to keep the arteries clean, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.  The anti-inflammation and antioxidant properties of blueberries are also great for your pooch’s brain, as they help prevent dementia and other age-related cognitive decline. Fresh blueberries make a great snack for your dog, or you can add a few to his dish a couple of times a week.

6. Alfalfa

Alfalfa is part of the legume family and has traditionally been used for its health benefits in animals. It’s rich in fiber and has been shown to help improve digestive health. Alfalfa also helps remove uric acid from the kidneys, which can help with arthritis and urinary conditions. Alfalfa also contains chlorophyll, a powerful antioxidant, and phytoestrogens, which have been shown to help prevent cancer. Powdered alfalfa can be added to your dog’s meals, or you can look for alfalfa in dog treats. Bonus: it helps freshen your dog’s breath.

Leesa recommends  choosing only organic for your dog too!

The Spice that Could Help Boost Memory in Just One Hour

While conducting the research for my upcoming book 60 Seconds to Boost Your Brain Power (Rodale, 2015), I came across an exciting study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study explored the effects of one of turmeric’s active ingredients known as curcumin on sixty healthy adults aged sixty to eighty-five to determine whether the spice has any short- or long-term memory or cognitive effects.

Conducted at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, researches assessed the mental effects of curcumin supplementation after one hour, three hours, and four weeks. They conducted multiple tests to determine whether the participants had any mood, cognitive, or blood marker effects that might indicate curcumin’s immediate or long-term effects. In just one hour after taking the supplement the participants showed significant performance improvement on memory and attention tasks compared to the placebo group.

The participants had many impressive results after four weeks of treatment with curcumin as well. The scientists indicated that working memory, energy levels, calmness and contentedness (as measures of mood), and even fatigue induced by psychological stress were significantly improved following the long-term treatment with the supplement. Participants also had lower cholesterol levels after taking the curcumin supplement.

Even Alzheimer’s patients with severe symptoms, including dementia, irritability, agitation, anxiety, and apathy, showed excellent therapeutic results when taking curcumin in a study published in the Japanese medical journal Ayu. When participants took 764 mg of turmeric with a standardized amount of 100 mg/day of curcumin for twelve weeks, they “started recovering from these symptoms without any adverse reaction in the clinical symptom and laboratory data.” After three months of treatment the patients’ symptoms and their reliance on caregivers significantly decreased. After one year of treatment two of the patients recognized their family members when they were unable to do so at the outset of the study. In one of the cases the person had a 17 percent improvement on their Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score.

The study results were achieved using a brand of curcumin called Longvida; however there are many other excellent brands. Ideally choose a standardized extract of curcumin. Follow package directions. Consult your physician prior to taking curcumin. In my upcoming book 60 Seconds to Boost Your Brain Power (Rodale, 2015), I recommend 400 mg of curcumin three times daily for people suffering from brain disorders, working with a physician.

The Case for Slowing Down in 2015

Research has shown that it takes 25 minutes for the average person to mentally recover from a single phone call or other such interruption during work. The problem is, research has also shown that these sorts of interruptions occur in our daily lives every 11 or so minutes. So when you’re halfway de-stressed from one interruption, another one comes blundering along into your life. It’s like consistently getting 4 hours of sleep when your body craves 8; it’s going to catch up with you — and it’s not going to be pretty.

Chronic, unrelenting stress is dangerous to our health, happiness, and longevity, being at the root of myriad chronic diseases and imbalances. But the benefits of reducing stress and slowing down in life are universal:

-increased happiness and enjoyment of life

-better, deeper focus

-less tension and and stress-induced musculoskeletal imbalances

Small life changes, like reducing an addiction to technology, can help you experience less stress in your daily life, and deal with stressors more healthily when they do come thundering along.

164395566

Take a card from the techies at Google: take a technology sabbath. Shut your electronics off for one day or an entire weekend. Read books, play games with your family, go outdoors, experience creativity-inducing boredom.

Even if you don’t have the luxury to take a technology sabbath, you can still slow down your daily routine. Make yourself a hearty homemade breakfast instead of rushed buttered toast, and give yourself the time to mindfully enjoy it. Eat dinner with your family without checking your phone midway. Listen to the sounds of birds instead of blasting music on your walk to the local cafe. Every little bit helps. Here are 4 additional ways to slow your life down:

1. Do a few important things instead of many trivial things

2. Leave early for events so you don’t have to rush.

3. Practice basic meditation for 5-25 minutes a day. Become comfortable with ‘doing nothing’. It has been scientifically proven to reduce stress.

4. Spend as much time as you can in nature, undistracted; even if all you can spare is just one day a month. It revitalizes you.

5. Eliminate what is unnecessary in your life — people, technology, fragile furnishings, et cetera; anything that requires trivial efforts, causes stress, or serves no function.  “Our life is frittered away by detail… simplify, simplify.” Thoreau

We are bombarded by facts and information in our everyday lives — so much so that it is impossible to absorb more than a fraction of it. Slow down and let yourself learn, hear, and see new things. Stop opening your browser window; slow down and open yourself up to the world.
