What To Do If You See A Yellow Ribbon on a Dog’s Leash

The Yellow Dog Project has now made its mark in 45 countries and educational materials have been translated into 12 languages. Fans are calling it, “Brilliant” and “The best thing to happen since the invention of the leash!”
Recently, I was walking my two dogs on some trails behind the local elementary school.  I go there because of the open fields and because few people come through the area in the evening.  My dogs need space. I have an elderly Labrador with laryngeal paralysis (a condition which inhibits a dog’s ability to breath when he is warm or excited).  It’s very important to keep him calm, and with my mid-sized terrier mix boinging alongside him, I already have my hands full in keeping the walks safe for both of them.  But then along comes a man with absolutely no boundaries. As he made a bee-line for us I hollered out, “Please don’t bring your dog over.” His response was, “Don’t worry he’s friendly.”  And with that he let go of his dog’s leash and says, “Go get em!”

Now here I am holding the hand of a small child and balancing two leashes in my hand, trying not to let the dogs tangle or to allow my elderly dog to get any sort of additional stimulation, and this dog comes at us like a bowling ball.  As expected, it was a mess.  My two dogs got tangled around one another.  My older dog felt threatened and the oncomer snapped at him.  My daughter was frightened and this guy just casually saunters over with no regard for the fall out. I had to ask him two more times to please move away with his dog before he finally understood.  By that time, my elderly dog was gasping for air and I had to kneel on the ground with him for a full 15 minutes before he could recover.

These days we have a yellow bandana tied around both leashes and look forward to the day when this concept is widely embraced by the pet loving community. You can visit The Yellow Dog Project.

A Handful of Walnuts May Keep Alzheimer’s Away

Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s.

Due to huge number of people suffering from this condition, there is extensive research to find possible cures or means of prevention.

Recent Study Gives Hope:

The New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities led by Dr. Abha Chauhan used mice vulnerable to developing Alzheimer’s disease in their study.  They fed them a mixed diet which contained 6 percent or 9 percent walnuts.  When they tested their learning ability, memory, and motor development, it was found that the control group mice performed much worse than the walnut consuming group.  It was also noted that there was a reduction in anxiety and improvement in motor skills in the walnut eaters.

Dr. Chauhan said these findings lead the way in advanced human studies on walnuts and Alzheimer’s disease.

How Is This Powerful Effect Possible?
Walnuts are the second highest food in antioxidants and very rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers speculate that this may be the how they protect the brain from degeneration.

Do we need to be concerned about Alzheimer’s?

Yes. Here are a few facts for you to ponder from the Alzheimer’s Association:

More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease.

  • Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States
  • 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
  • Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
  • A woman in her 60’s has an estimated lifetime risk for developing Alzheimer’s is 1 in 6. For breast cancer it is 1 in 11.

Previous Studies indicate that Walnuts Help with Brain Function.

  • Walnuts may help your memory was the conclusion of a report published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012.
  • Diet of walnuts and blueberries may help maintain brain function. It was found that shorter chain fatty acids found in plants, such as walnuts, may have beneficial effects on brain function.
  • Increase your brain size with walnuts. Study found that those with a low level of omega 3 had smaller brain volumes than those with higher levels.

Walnuts: The Crinkly Powerfood are full of health benefits beyond brain health:

  • Researchers at Marshall University found that a daily dose of walnuts (equal to 2 ounces a day in humans) reduces the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice.
  • Similar finding in mice for prostate cancer was found at the UC Davis Cancer Center.
  • Walnuts have been found to be more effective than olive oil in countering the ill effects of high-fat foods (Barcelona, 2006).
  • Walnuts may lower cholesterol and decrease heart disease.  The high alpha-linolenic acid content helps maintain the elasticity of the arteries, which aids circulation. Cholesterol is linked to the two leading causes of death in the world.

Include some walnuts into your daily diet.

 1. Bad posture

Sit up straight! And not just because your mother told you too…according to the American Chiropractic Association, your body actually consumes more energy when you’re slouching. Make sure you’re taking breaks to stretch, recommends wellness expert Scott Donkin, DC, DACBOH. “When you stretch, you elongate and elasticize your ligaments and muscles and lubricate the joints. Your joints will glide more, which will require less consumption of energy in the muscle.”

2. Being thirsty

If you’re often only remembering to drink water once you feel thirsty, you’re dehydrated. “Our thirst sensation doesn’t really appear until we are 1 [percent] or 2 percent dehydrated. By then dehydration is already setting in and starting to impact how our mind and body perform,” scientist Lawrence E. Armstrong explains. Just a 1.5 percent drop in normal water volume in the body has adverse effects on your energy level (along with your mood and ability to think clearly), two University of Connecticut studies found. Women are particularly susceptible to those effects.

3. Your gadgets…even when theyre off

From street lamps to the light from your charging laptop to the glowing numbers on your alarm clock, even a small amount of artificial light—anything that keeps your bedroom from being completely dark while you sleep—can suppress the production of a sleep-inducing hormone called melatonin. Not only will you have a harder time falling asleep, it’ll be tougher to stay that way. Consider covering up bright lights from laptops and phones, and add blackout curtains in your bedroom if the light is coming from outside.

4. Feeling lonely

Loneliness and isolation can wreak havoc on the body, leading to higher blood pressure, a weakened immune system, and issues with learning and memory. And sleep is less physically and psychologically restorative, with more frequent wake-ups in the middle of the night, often leaving socially isolated people feeling drained in the morning.

6 Liver-Boosting Superfoods to Add to Your Diet

Avocado—Research shows that avocado supercharges other foods eaten alongside of it.  In other words, it boosts the nutrient absorption of other foods, particularly of a group of nutrients called carotenoids.  You may have heard of beta carotene (forms vitamin A in your body) and lycopene. The absorption of both of these nutrients is increased with avocado consumption.  Avocados contain a type of fat that is found in seafood but rarely in foods found on the land. While they have a reputation for being “high fat,” the fats they contain are beneficial and even reduce inflammation in the body. This translates into many liver health boosting properties. If you’ve never eaten avocado, it tastes like butter. Use it in place of butter on bread, wraps, or sandwiches, or top a salad with avocado, use it to make a delicious guacamole or veggie dip.  Simply cut lengthwise around the avocado, twist slightly to release the flesh from the pit, then using a slow chopping action hit the blade of a knife against the pit, twist and the pit will pop right out.

Dandelion Greens—Not just a weed, dandelion greens are delicious food and powerful medicine. They contain blood-building chlorophyll which gives them their green color. They also contain bitter compounds that help cleanse the liver. Choose young dandelion greens since they are more palatable. The older ones become extremely bitter. You can steam, sauté or juice the greens. Roast and grind the root for a delicious coffee-like caffeine-free beverage. I love dandelion greens chopped and sautéed with some minced garlic and olive oil then topped with some fresh lemon juice and a dash of unrefined sea salt.

Soy foods—Lecithin, found in soy foods, helps the liver metabolize fats and reduce cholesterol. Like eggs, it contains a substance called phosphatidylcholine and essential fatty acids that help keep liver cells healthy and help prevent fatty deposits from building up in the liver. Lecithin also helps reduce high blood pressure by allowing the blood vessels to relax to allow better blood flow. Lecithin is naturally found in soy milk, tofu, and miso, as well as organic eggs. Choose only certified organic soy foods since soy is a heavily genetically-modified food.  Fermented varieties like miso and soy yogurt are best.

Onions—Onions contains sulfur that is required to increase enzyme activity that, in turn, boosts liver cleansing. Without adequate levels of sulfur, the phase 2 of liver detoxification cannot keep pace with level 1, meaning that many toxins can become MORE dangerous in your body. Like garlic, onions also kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

Nuts and Seeds—I’ve counted these as 2 items but there are many different types of nuts and seeds, including: walnuts, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, etc. Consuming nuts and seeds is an all-natural way to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Be sure to choose raw, unsalted, nuts and seeds, preferably those found in the refrigerator section of your local health food store since the oils go rancid easily.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea combines some of the best perks of other teas—it’s second only to black tea when it comes to caffeine levels, and second to green tea when it comes to an antioxidant boost. Plus, it may even help boost metabolism and aid in weight loss.

 

Darjeeling Tea

Steep a cup of this tea from India to help prevent ulcers, gastritis, and gastric cancer—research has found that darjeeling inhibits a pathogen carried by more than half the population that leads to those ailments.

 

Black Tea

Four cups of black tea a day was found to reduce stroke risk by 21 percent compared to those who never drank tea, a study of 75,000 men and women found last year. Can’t handle that many cups? Black tea is full of antioxidant compounds that may help ward off Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. And just one or two cups per day has been associated with a 70% lower chance of having or developing type 2 diabetes.

 

White Tea

White tea isn’t as packed with caffeine as other teas, but it packs a huge health punch, with potential cardiovascular and cancer-fighting benefits, and possibly even benefits for those with diabetes—one animal study found that drinking white tea resulted in better glucose tolerance and reduced LDL cholesterol.

 

Honeysuckle Tea

New research says to brew a cup of honeysuckle tea during flu season—scientists found an ingredient in the tea that they say acts like “viral penicillin.”

 

Hibiscus Tea

High blood pressure? Try three cups of hibiscus tea every day, which has been found to reduce systolic blood pressure by an average of seven points. And even a small reduction in blood pressure can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.

The Spice That Can Strengthen Your Brain

Turmeric, the golden-orange spice commonly used in curries, may play a role in enhancing the brain’s ability to build new cells—a process called neurogenesis—according to a group of German researchers from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine. The key appears to be a compound found in turmeric, aromatic turmerone, that previous studies have shown can reduce inflammation in the brain.

This most recent study expands aromatic turmerone’s benefits to include new cell growth. In fact, the compound was capable of enhancing neural stem cell growth in rats by as much as 80 percent, in some cases.

Study authors admit that, while their results underscore the potential brain benefits of turmeric, there’s still a long way to go before any science-backed argument for suggesting the spice as a therapy for those with conditions that kill brain cells, such as Alzheimer’s disease or stroke.

An ancient remedy

Turmeric contains another potentially beneficial component: curcumin.

The health advantages of curcumin are perhaps the world’s worst kept therapeutic secrets. The compound has been used for millennia by Indian, Middle Eastern and Asian cultures for a variety of purposes, from alleviating inflammation and other aches, to cooking, to ceremonial rituals.

More recently, scientific studies have identified curcumin—an antioxidant—as being potentially beneficial for people with arthritis, atherosclerosis, depression, different forms of cancer, dementia (including Alzheimer’s) and high cholesterol.

Despite these positive reviews, the formal evidence regarding curcumin and turmeric is not yet strong enough to warrant a formal dosage recommendation, but it certainly can’t hurt to use the tangy powder to spice up some of your dishes.

Since the amount of curcumin in turmeric is relatively small, try choosing a recipe that also contains black pepper and fat, two ingredients that can enhance the curcumin’s bioavailability—your body’s ability to absorb the compound—like this hearty, healthy breakfast scramble, perfect for a cool fall morning:

Spicy Scrambled Eggs with Leafy Greens

Ingredients

2 eggs
Salt and pepper
Dash of paprika
2 tsp turmeric
1 ½ cups of spinach or kale
1 tbsp coconut oil

Directions

  • Melt coconut oil in medium saucepan.
  • Add spinach/kale and cook until wilted.
  • In a separate bowl, combine eggs, salt and pepper, paprika and turmeric. Whisk vigorously.
  • Pour egg/spice mixture into saucepan and mix until greens and eggs are thoroughly cooked.
  • (People with sensitive taste buds can add a few ounces of feta cheese to cut the heat of the dish.)

6 Ways to Fight Inflammation Naturally

Even when we get our eating habits in order, we might still need help managing occasional pain. Many caregivers suggest herbal remedies because they are safer overall and less problematic than NSAIDs, which fight inflammation and pain, but can also mask important warning signs or lead to larger problems, such as leaky gut syndrome, bleeding ulcers, or renal issues, among others. (For more on this, see “This is Your Body on Ibuprofen,” by Kristin Ohlson (Experience LifeJune 2014.)

Here are some commonly recommended botanicals, with recommended dosages, from Dan Lukaczer, ND, associate director of medical education at the Institute for Functional Medicine. (Please consult with your healthcare practitioner for an individualized plan.)

Turmeric
This golden spice, ground from the rhizomes of a plant related to ginger, is a staple of Ayurvedic medicine; its active ingredient is curcumin. Turmeric has been cited in more than 2,500 published studies on numerous conditions, including asthma and cancer. In 2009, the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicinefound that curcumin is about as effective as ibuprofen in reducing the pain of osteoarthritis of the knee. Like many other botanicals, curcumin is not a quick fix and can take up to two months to be effective. In capsule form, take 750 to 1,500 mg daily. Many practitioners also suggest topical creams containing curcumin.

Boswellia
This tree produces a resin that is used in incense and is another staple of Ayurvedic medicine. It is used to treat arthritis, ulcerative colitis, coughs, and asthma. Also known as Indian frankincense. In capsule form, take 300 to 400 mg three times daily.

Ginger
People training for a marathon may want to try this Ayurvedic staple instead of NSAIDs: According to studies, taking ginger can reduce exercise-induced pain by up to 25 percent. Turmeric, boswellia, and ginger are often mixed together into one compound along with black pepper, which is thought to aid absorption. In capsule form, take 500 to 1,000 mg two to three times daily.

Bromelain
An enzyme derived from pineapple, bromelain has long been used to combat indigestion and inflammation. Recent studies indicate that bromelain might be helpful for both workout-related injuries as well as arthritis. In capsule form, take 250 to 750 mg three times daily without food.

Capsaicin
The active compound that gives cayenne peppers their heat, capsaicin is made into a topical cream used to treat both muscle aches and arthritic joint pain. It interferes with something called substance P, which is involved in both inflammation and sending pain signals to the brain. Apply capsaicin cream topically three times daily.

Arnica montana
Topical preparations from this mountain daisylike plant have been used for centuries to treat bruises, sprains, muscle aches, wound healing, joint pain, and swelling from broken bones. One study found that arnica gel worked as well as ibuprofen in reducing pain in people with arthritis in their hands. New studies suggest that arnica may help with burns and postoperative swelling. Topical preparations shouldn’t be applied to broken skin. Use arnica cream topically three times daily, or take three to four pellets (30x to 30c) three to four times daily.

Top 3 Health Benefits of Pumpkin for Dogs and Cats

 

1) Digestive Health: Pumpkin is a fabulous source of fiber for our furry friends, as well as for us. Pureed pumpkin (with no added sugar or spice) can help dogs and cats with both constipation and diarrhea. Adding a tablespoon or two (in proportion to their size) to their regular meal is known to help keep them regular. I have labs, so anything is edible to them, and I’m sure they would eat it right out of the can if I allowed. Most cats are usually a little more finicky. It can also help dogs and cats with indigestion or upset stomachs.

2) Urinary Health: According to Veterinarians Laci and Jed Schaible, co-founders of VetLive.com, pumpkin seeds are high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants (good for overall healthy skin and fur), and the oils in pumpkins’ flesh and seeds are believed to support urinary health. They are also an excellent source of Vitamin A, beta-carotene, potassiumand iron, and may even reduce the likelihood your pet will develop cancer.

3) Weight Loss: I’ve written about the dangers and commonality of pet obesity. Dogs seem to naturally love pumpkin. If you are looking to take a few pounds off of your pooch or kitty, try reducing a portion of their food and replace it with the same portion of canned pumpkin. Their tummy will feel just as full, and they might even thank you for the additional flavor.
