Is Your City Sleep Deprived?

These are findings by Jawbone, the company that analyzed the sleep patterns of more than 5,000 people worldwide who wore its UP, a digitized wristband that tracks how users move and sleep.

The data shows:

  • Tokyo, Japan gets the least sleep – 5 hr. 44 min.
  • Melbourne, Australia gets the most sleep – 6 hr. 58 min.
  • Brisbane, Australia is earliest to rise – 6:29 a.m.
  • Moscow, Russia is latest to rise — 8:08 a.m.
  • Stockholm, Sweden takes the most steps – 8,876.
  • San Paulo, Brazil takes the least steps – 6,254.

“The movement and sleep patterns of a city tell an amazing story about its culture and people,” says Brian Wilt, Jawbone’s data scientist who crunched the numbers. “How active is a city? When do they go to bed on average, and how much do they sleep? … Each pattern forms a distinct ‘thumbprint’ for the city, the unique way its citizens live their lives.”

What about your city?  Do the people in your city sleep enough?  Do they move enough?  Let us know in the comments below….

10 Ways to Reuse Banana Peels

But there’s good news: We are seeing a lot of action to reduce the amount of food we toss. A French grocery store started selling ugly fruits and vegetables at discounted prices. An American beer company created a reverse food truck that collects food donations and reroutes them to the local food bank. Europe is considering eliminating those misleading “best before” dates stamped on food.

All good news. But what can you do in your own home? How about looking for inventive ways to use food parts you would normally chunk. Let’s start with banana peels!

Sustainable America developed this infographic revealing all things banana eaters need to know about their beloved yellow fruits, including 10 things to do with the peels. Apparently we throw away 25% of the bananas we bring home, and we send 780 million pounds of banana peels to the landfill every year in the U.S. But check out these brilliant ideas for using those seemingly worthless peels — from feeding and fertilizing your plants to tenderizing meat. Keep reading past the infographic for additional ideas I discovered for using those peels.

10 Ways to Reuse Banana Peels

Amazing stuff right? But here’s more: After a quick search, I uncovered a great source of information for eliminating waste in all aspects of your lives: Trash Backwards. In their list of 20 ways to use banana peels, they suggest using them to whiten your teeth, control aphids in your garden (I will be using this tip), and to cure hemorrhoids (I hope I don’t need to use this one).

These ideas have inspired me to pay a bit more attention to what I throw away (food and non-food alike) and see what I can do with it. What type of waste do you want to find new ways to repurpose? Let me know and you may see a future blog post with inspiration written just for you!

3 Strange New Ways to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

 1. Work Near a Window

Need some help convincing your boss that you need a corner office? Bring up this study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Researchers found that when employees were exposed to natural light during the workday, they slept 46 minutes longer—and more soundly—than employees in windowless offices.

Why should your boss care? A bad night of sleep means short-term effects like memory loss, attention issues, and slower reflexes—something that would surely affect your performance at work. The employees who saw sunlight from their desks were even four times more active during the workday.

The benefits of a windowed office extended past the workday, too, with workers getting more rest and sleeping better and longer on the weekends.

2. Keep Your Feet Outside the Covers

To sleep better and fall asleep, keep one or both feet outside the covers, National Sleep Foundation spokesperson Natalie Dautovitch recently told Science of Us.

The reason it helps, she says, is the same reason you’ll hear suggestions to take a warm bath or have a cup of tea before bed. It’s not the warmth that relaxes you into a restful slumber; it’s that your body temperature actually rapidly cools when, for example, you leave the warm tub. There’s a connection between cool body temperature and sleep—researchers have found that our bodies are at our coolest in deep stages of sleep, and our bodies naturally cool when we’re about to go to sleep.

But why stick your foot out? Isn’t it enough that your head is uncovered? Dautovitch explains that feet (and hands) contain blood vessels designed to help dissipate your body heat. Turning up the AC could also help—research shows that people sleep best in rooms that are 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Get Placebo Sleep

Still not sleeping well? Just trick yourself into thinking you are and you can still get the benefits of a full night of restorative snoozing, new research says.

Psychologists at Colorado College asked participants how well they slept the previous night before randomly assigning them to “above average” or “below average” sleep qualities. They then hooked them up to a machine they claimed (falsely) could measure the previous night’s sleep. After the researchers told participants whether their sleep quality was below or above average, they had them complete a cognitive functioning test.

It turned out that regardless of how well participants reported they had slept the night before, it was their perception of sleep quality (their “above average” or “below average” group) that influenced their performance on the test. Participants who believed they had slept poorly scored 44% on the test, while those who believed they slept well scored 70%.

The downside for the rest of us? Once we know about the placebo effect, it’s not as effective.

So let’s try this—I’ll tell you that you slept fantastically, and you tell me the same thing tomorrow morning. Deal?

6 People Foods You Can Feed Your Dog

1. Apples. It’s best to keep the skin on apples when you feed your dog this treat. Apple skins contain phytonutrients that some believe can shield against some types of cancer in humans. Apples are rich in vitamins A and C and fiber. Watch out for apple seeds, though, as they contain cyanide. Bernadine Cruz, DVM, a veterinarian at Laguna Hills Animal Hospital in Laguna Hills, California, recommends fruit like apples for overweight dogs.

2. Peanut butter. A great source of added protein and fiber. Avoid sharing large gobs of the stuff, as it is tough to chew and swallow. A tablespoon on their dry food or letting them lick a swab off your finger is best.

3. Yogurt. This treat is loaded with calcium and protein. Make sure the yogurt has live active bacteria and no sugars or artificial sweeteners. If your dog is overweight, opt for fat-free yogurts, so long as they don’t have fat substitutes—like Simplesse or Olestra.

4. Popcorn. Air popped and sans butter or salt. Popcorn is packed with potassium, as well phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium, which promote bone health. When offering a handful, especially toward the bottom of the bowl, take out any “old maids.”

5. Watermelon. Share sparingly, as this snack is loaded with sugar, which will add to your dog’s weight. Remember to remove the seeds. And serve outdoors to prepare for a quick potty run, since watermelon is filled with water and fiber.

6. Salmon. This fish is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which can help your dog’s immune system and keep his skin and coat healthy. Make sure your salmon is cooked before giving your dog a taste, since raw salmon can contain a parasite that can make your dog sick.

Doggie No No’s

On the other side, there are certain people foods you should not share with your dog. According to the ASPCA, these include chocolate, Macadamia nuts and avocados, which can cause a number of serious health complications.  The same holds true for grapes and raisins, which can cause kidney failure. And keep your dogs away from milk, which can cause diarrhea and other digestive problems. For a complete list of what not to feed your dog, check out ASPCA’s People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets.

Leesa recommends all the people food you feed you pet be organic!  My Ava also loves steamed organic broccoli!

12 Things You Never Knew About Sweat

1. You have between 2 and 4 million sweat glands in your body.

2. Your feet alone have about 250,000 sweat glands between them.

3. Sweating from stress and sweating to cool down are chemically different. When you sweat because you’re hot, it comes from your eccrine glands, but when you sweat because you’re stressed, it comes from your apocrine glands.

4. The name for excessive sweating is hyperhidrosis, and about 3 percent of people have it.

5. Speaking of which, excessive sweating can be a symptom of menopause.

6. On the other hand, the name for absent sweating (or not sweating at all) is anhidrosis, which is dangerous because your body can overheat.

7. There might be some credence to the saying, “Men sweat, women glow.” On average, men sweat 40 percent more than women.

8. The more in shape you are, the more quickly and profusely your body will sweat. It does this to cool itself down so you can work out at a greater intensity for a longer period of time.

9. Sweat has a stinky reputation, but sweat itself doesn’t actually smell. The odor comes from the bacteria on your skin instead.

10. Pigs actually have very few sweat glands, so the expression “sweating like a pig” is scientifically inaccurate. Instead, it probably refers to how smelly pigs make themselves by bathing in mud to cool down.

11. The saltiness of sweat varies from person to person. Some people also sweat more than others.

12. If you thought your sweat was conspicuous, consider hippos’ sweat: it’s RED. The colored pigment both acts a sunscreen and kills bacteria.

25 Vegan Sources for Calcium

When folks find out you don’t eat dairy, after they tell you they’d die without cheese they often will ask how you get enough calcium in your diet without milk products. The dairy industry has done a great job marketing milk as the best way to build healthy bones, but you can actually get calcium from all sorts of plant-based sources, and they’re often better for your bones than dairy products!

We need between 1000 and 1200 milligrams of calcium per day for healthy bones, and it’s not just vegans who need to plan carefully to get enough calcium each day. Over 75 percent of Americans are deficient in calcium, so plenty of omnivores aren’t getting enough, either. No matter what your diet, you just need to make sure to include two or three servings of calcium-rich foods and/or calcium-fortified foods in each meal, and you’ll be able to hit that target for bone health.

Unlike milk, plant-based calcium sources contain vitamins C and K and the minerals potassium and magnesium, which are all important for bone health. Next time someone asks you where you get your calcium, you can tell them it comes from some of the 25 vegan sources below!

25 Vegan Sources for Calcium

1. Kale (1 cup contains 180 mg)

2. Collard Greens (1 cup contains over 350 mg)

3. Blackstrap Molasses (2 tablespoons contains 400 mg)

4. Tempeh (1 cup contains 215 mg)

5. Turnip Greens (1 cup contains 250 mg)

6. Fortified non-dairy milk (1 cup contains 200-300 mg)

7. Hemp milk (1 cup contains 460 mg)

8. Fortified orange juice (1 cup contains 300 mg)

9. Tahini (2 tablespoons contains 130 mg)

10. Almond butter (2 tablespoons contains 85 mg)

11. Great northern beans (1 cup contains 120 mg)

12. Soybeans (1 cup contains 175 mg)

13. Broccoli (1 cup contains 95 mg)

14. Raw fennel (1 medium bulb contains 115 mg)

15. Blackberries (1 cup contains 40 mg)

16. Black Currants (1 cup contains 62 mg)

17. Oranges (1 orange contains between 50 and 60 mg)

18. Dried apricots (1/2 cup contains 35 mg)

19. Figs (1/2 cup contains 120 mg)

20. Dates (1/2 cup contains 35 mg)

21. Artichoke (1 medium artichoke contains 55 mg)

22. Roasted sesame seeds (1 oz. contains 35 mg)

23. Adzuki beans (1 cup contains 65 mg)

24. Navy beans (1 cup contains 125 mg)

25. Amaranth (1 cup contains 275 mg)

Leesa recommends always choosing organic foods!

8 Fast Food Chains That Serve Local, Organic, Vegan Food

Sweet Green - What’s so sweet about Sweet Green? For starters, pretty much all their salad ingredients are locally sourced, and often organic. Their meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free. And the restaurants themselves are green from top to bottom: They use 100% plant-based compostable packaging and re-usaable salad blaster bowls and bags. Reclaimed and Forest Stewardship Council-certified materials go into the construction of their facilities, along with low-VOC paint and energy efficient LED and fluorescent lighting. They compost food scraps in their kitchens and have composting and recycling stations so customers can compost their packaging and recycle their bottles. Plus, Sweet Green offsets 100% of their power with wind energy credits.  The quickly expanding chain can be found in 27 locations in and around Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Go for the salads, but don’t leave without a cup of their yummy frozen yogurt.

Veggie Grill - The gluten-free, soy-free items on the menu here are also free of meat, dairy, eggs, saturated animal fat, cholesterol, antibiotics and trans fat. Their “chickin’” and veggie-steak proteins are made from organic or non-GMO soybeans, wheat and peas.  Plus, they serve super grains, a whole-grain blend of millet, buckwheat, quinoa, and brown rice. Need something to drink? Try their homemade lemonade, organic teas, and locally produced craft beer and wine, all of which are free of high-fructose corn syrup. Find them in California, Oregon and Washington state.

Lyfe Kitchen – This chain strives to “be a place that reflects your values towards health, community and sustainability.” It serves “organic whenever possible.” There’s a big emphasis on locally raised fruits and vegetables. If you’re looking for breakfast, try a morning tofu wrap, or steel cut oats with dried cranberries and toasted almonds. For lunch, savor the vegan unfried buffalo “chick’n” (NOT!)  strips and a vegan antipasto, or the quinoa crunch bowl, made from quinoa tabbouleh, fresh crunchy vegetables and fireman’s hot sauce. For now, you can eat at Lyfe Kitchen in California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and Chicago.

Dig Inn – A chain in New York City, Dig Inn sources local, seasonal ingredients for items like their “Natural Hero” sandwich,  made from house-made spicy beef and chicken meatballs with grass-fed cheddar, fresh parsley and whole grain Dijon mustard. Cluk’N’Kale is naturally-raised roasted teriyaki chicken served with sweet potatoes and kale and apple salad with ginger dressing.

Chipotle – Probably the biggest fast-food chain with a commitment to sustainably raised food, Chipotle’s website says that “whenever possible, we use meat from animals raised without the use of antibiotics or added hormones.” The chain also sources organic and local produce “when practical.” Wiggle room aside, Chipotle has shown that fast food chains can steer a greener course when they put their minds to it. The company has put solar panels on restaurants, uses low VOC paints and energy-efficient lights, and paper products made from unbleached paper. Chipotle is pretty much everywhere.

Elevation Burger - This growing chain, currently in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Maine, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, the Carolinas, Florida and Indiana, serves burgers made from 100% USDA-certified organic, grass-fed, free-range beef. The veggie burgers are made with organic whole grains, too. Try their “half-the-guilt” burger — one organic beef patty and one veggie patty of your choice. Want a smaller portion? Order the kid-sized burger, even if you’re only a kid at heart.

Native Foods – The chefs at this chain have taken the word “native” to heart, making all their vegan cuisine from scratch – including cheese, tempeh, and of course, their nachos, chilis, soups and salads. Their menu, which is 100% plant-based, showcases seasonal dishes as well as fun stuff like the Rockin’ Moroccan Bowl with tofu, grilled veggies and quinoa. Give them a try if you live in California, Colorado, Oregon, Chicago, or Washington, D.C.

Tender Greens - The salads and entrees you’ll find here are composed mostly of freshly picked, locally grown produce and beef from grain-fed, hormone/antibiotic-free beef and free-range chickens. They tap small local farmers, ranchers, artisans, boutique wineries, local breweries and coffee roasters. Says the company on its website, “there should be a conscious connection between the one who eats the food and the sources of that sustenance.” Who can argue with that?

5 Foods Proven to Make You Happier

broccoli

Broccoli

This veggie contains a trace mineral called chromium, which in addition to helping you metabolize food, also increases your brain’s levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and melatonin, helping it regulate mood. It’s even been shown to decrease symptoms of atypical depression (like overeating and sleeping excessively). You can also get chromium from grape juice and potatoes.

cashews

Cashews

Cashews are full of zinc, which has been found to decrease depressive symptoms and even improve the response of antidepressants. A lack of the vitamin can lead to loss of appetite, depressive symptoms, and a weaker immune system. Roasted pumpkin seeds and pork loin are also good sources of zinc.

Salmon

This fish is packed with vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin”—the easiest way to get your helping of the mood-regulating vitamin is to spend about 15 minutes out in the sun a few times a week. Having trouble getting your dose during wintertime? Make sure you’re getting it from the foods you eat—in addition to salmon, milk and egg yolks are also good sources of vitamin D.

Spinach

Spinach contains the mineral magnesium—something that the USDA estimates about a third of people are deficient in. It’s important to get it into your diet—magnesium plays a big role in the development of serotonin, and a deficiency can lead to depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue. You can also get magnesium from almonds and edamame — and also an epsom salt bath.

Chickpeas

Reach for the chickpeas to get your helping of vitamin B6—the vitamin helps the body make serotonin and norepinephrine, which influence mood. A serious B6 deficiency can lead to irritability, nervousness, and depression. Other sources of the vitamin include chicken breasts and yellow fin tuna.

Leesa recommends choosing organic nuts and produce and wild caught salmon!

10 Health Benefits of This Incredible Superfruit

Avocados are bursting with of other health benefits too, and are so strongly associated with fertility and aphrodisiacs that the Aztecs would lock up virgin daughters during avocado harvest time to keep them safe.  Read the details and check out the infographic below on this Powerfood.

“Either you run the day, or the day runs you. Or you eat guacamole.” John Rohn

10 Avocado Benefits

1. Nutrient-dense fruit

Yes, they are actually a large berry with one seed. One avocado contains approximately 1/3 of the daily requirement of vitamin K and folate, lots of pantothenic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin C.

Avocado has twice the potassium of a banana. It also contains vitamin E, niacin, and riboflavin. That is definitely nutrient-dense!

2. A Source of Healthy Fat

They help increase good cholesterol. Avocados are full of fat, but adding avocados to the diet can increase HDL and decrease triglycerides.

3. Help Cure Cancer

The glutathione found in avocados has been found to help prevent some kinds of cancers.

Researchers found extracts from Hass avocados kill or stop the growth of pre-cancerous cells that lead to oral cancer. Avocado extract was found to inhibit prostate cancer.

4. Excellent as a First Baby Food

Dr. William Sears puts it as #1 on the top ten list of fruits for babies because avocado nutrition is well-suited for a baby’s growing development.

5. Stabilize Blood Sugar Levels

Avocado slows digestion which keeps blood sugar from spiking after a meal.

6. Avocados Can Protect Unborn Babies

One avocado provides one third of your recommended daily intake of folate, which helps form a baby’s brain and nervous system. The USDA recommends avocados as one of the best sources for some of the nutrients needed when pregnant.

7. Improve Eyesight

The high amount of lutein and zeaxanthin in avocados can protect your eyes from age-related macular degeneration and improve your vision. One ounce of avocado contains 81 micrograms of lutein.

8. Have Low Pesticide Levels

“Avocados were the cleanest: only 1 percent of avocado samples showed any detectable pesticides.“ The thick skin of the avocado protects it from absorbing pesticides.

9. Help With Weight Loss

It was found that those who ate half of a fresh avocado with their lunch had a 40 percent less desire to eat for 3 hours after lunch, and a 28 percent less desire to eat 5 hours after as compared with those who ate lunch with no avocado.

10. Good for Sexual Health and Fertility

They are rich in Vitamin B6 and folic acid which regulate sexual hormone functions. Also, vitamin B6 and potassium boost testosterone production in males. Rich, heart healthy fats keep your heart beating strong making sure that blood is flowing to the right places.

Perhaps those Spanish priests were on to something when they banned their parishioners from eating avocados. Avocados were a fertility fruit for the Aztecs and used as an aphrodisiac by the Mayans. Old folklore mentions the Aztecs would lock up virgin daughters during avocado harvest time to keep them safe from farmers who may be sexually-aroused from eating too many avocados.

Bonus: Great for Beauty Treatments

The glutamine amino acid in avocados helps cleanse your skin and offers it enough protection against harsh environmental factors. D-manno-heptulose found in avocados has been shown to boost collagen formation. Their specific amino acids and carotenoid anti-oxidants can help reduce age spots and heal scars and burns.

Avocado Trivia:

  • An avocado can weight from 8 ounces to 3 pounds depending upon the variety.
  • Almost 50 million pounds of avocados are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday in the U.S. Holy guacamole!
  • Avocado pits yield a milky fluid that turns red when exposed to air. The Spanish conquistadors used this ink in documents that are preserved to this day.
  • A postman, Rudolph Hass, patented the Hass avocado tree in 1935. The first Hass avocado tree is still producing.
  • Avocado became known as the ‘alligator pear’ because of its alligator type skin texture and pear shape.
  • Mexico produces the most avocados, California the second most.

Take a look at this avocado infographic, a colorful way to highlight everything the avocado has to offer!

Boost Metabolism While You Sleep

According to a recent study, the temperature of your bedroom actually has a direct impact on your fat composition, and potentially your metabolism. How so? It turns out that cooler temperatures result in an increase in brown fat, a metabolically active fat that, until recently, was not thought to exist in adults. Brown fat has been shown to burn ordinary white fat and increase insulin sensitivity. Adults contain mere teaspoonfuls within their necks and upper backs, but according to a study published in Diabetes, it can be altered by changing your sleeping habitat.

In the study, five young, healthy men slept in a controlled room with a controlled diet for 4 months — the first and third months spent sleeping at a neutral 75 degrees, the second month a cool 66, and the final month a very warm 81. Their findings were quite astounding. The men, while remaining neutral in the 75 degree bedrooms, actually doubled their levels of brown fat and improved their insulin sensitivity during their month in the 66 degree bedroom. This is because cooler temperatures, while still being above shivering, activate brown fat deposits, which start increasing and fervently burning fuel. Their ignition also improves the body’s sensitivity to the hormone insulin, which is an important finding for diabetes and insulin resistance research.

On the other hand, the volunteers’ time spent sleeping in the 81 degree bedroom actually reduced their initial quantities of metabolically active brown fat, meaning they had less than they started out with. Luckily, this study shows that brown fat levels are not stagnant, and may be adjusted as easily as turning the thermostat down while you sleep. Plus, the lower heating bill can’t hurt in the winter!

Brown fat is mostly found in great quantities in infants and young children, gradually decreasing with age, as the elderly show the least amount. How else can you increase the brown fat you do possess? All-mighty exercise actually has the potential to morph some of your white fat into brown and burn more calories. It also helps to eat a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet and keep a positive outlook on life if you are looking to shed some pounds. If nothing else, that will help with anything.
